so no more golden triangle eh. weapons, grenades, melee, armor abilities, tactical package, support upgrade now i guess.

The Golden Triangle of Halo is:
  • Spawning with a powerful, yet skillful Utility Weapon
  • Power Weapon Control through Timing
  • Spawn Control through Map Knowledge and Power Positioning

Set it in a Science Fiction environment with some classic Quake map design, and you've got a Halo multiplayer experience.

Then I don't think you quite understand Halo.

The golden triangle is based upon the abilities given to the player, not the abilities of the player.

EDIT: To clarify, I don't argue that those things are vital to Halo. It's just that's not what the golden triangle is about.

One thing I always found odd was on launch day when I entered my LE codes there was no notification in game or anywhere that I was indeed a season pass owner. Something just seemed off. With Gears 3 it was 100% obvious you were a season pass owner. So even though I have the maps downloaded I'm not sure if its because I am indeed a season pass owner or because they are still free to the masses. The areas of this game that MS and 343 decided to "half ass" are just utterly mind boggling.

I had the same thoughts mate when redeeming the LE codes, specialisations aren't noted as redeemed anywhere. Further, the weapon skins and avatar items etc did NOT unlock and we had to wait for 343i/SBL to correct those bugs too.

It's just a series of laughable issues.

So from what I gather the consensus is that it's not worth it to turn on the xbox for these new maps right?

Don't know why I redeemed those codes from the LE days after I stopped playing, could've given them away to someone who actually needed them.

In 2012 who actually sits around playing rock, paper, scissors for any prolonged period of time?

Why is that the holy grail they're aiming for?

This.

I have never understood why developers ever mention rock paper scissors as if its a good thing.

Good gameplay is emergent and dynamic - not predetermined.

You know what, I'm really annoyed with this whole DLC thing.

First up, I put faith into 343i to make a great Halo game. I even paid the extra money to get the Limited Edition - which I might add, wasn't exactly value for money all things considering. The game has been decent so far and to be honest I was actually looking forward to the Crimson Map Pack. For whatever reason however, not only did we (people who put faith into 343i and bought the LE/map pass) have to wait another 7 or so hours just to get the maps that everyone else had access to from the get go, but now they're just giving the map pack to everyone for free.

What the actual fuck. I can honestly say that this is the last time I'm buying a limited edition from 343i and a map pass in advance. Hell, at this point I seriously doubt I'll be picking up the next instalment at all (Granted, Halo 2 Anniversary will be a must buy if it's ever released).

Regardless of whether or not it was an accident, it really is frustrating.

And this is coming from someone who has bought every single Halo game at release.

Wait, so your telling me that the map pack that I just spent 800 msp on just now comes free with my specialization code?

I always think of the "Golden Triangle" as what makes Halo, Halo.

I think saying the three most important things for the player to have at their disposal, or their abilities, to be melee, grenade, and weapons doesn't make it a "Halo" game. It makes it an FPS. Any of them really.

Eh, RIP Halo?

Well, it seems most can get them for free so you should grab them if that applies to you. Im not sure how they play, but Im betting they are average and nothing special at all. But hey, I may be wrong and I still am looking forward to trying them out later on.

A question about the season pass: Does it remain a purchasing option even after all three map packs are released? You could buy whichever packs you want individually or buy them all at once at a discount, right?

RIP TF2

You know, as a LE owner I'm pretty pissed that US citisens got all the specialisations and a free map pack. It's rediculous. While I'm genuinly happy for the people who profited from this, I expect a compensation from MS/343 to LE owners and people who bought the maps. Luckily I haven't used any of my LE codes yet so I might just sell my LE and buy Halo 4 used for cheap.

I was just quoting Bungie's use of the term Golden Triangle. Like you say and obviously, it's much deeper than that.

Whats with the daily population, seems like it should be a lot higher for a day DLC came out and was FREE? Sitting at 119k, this was the peak hour yesterday but peak hour might be this coming hour for today...

It should.

A guy in the H4 thread didn't have access to the free map pack until he redeemed the code he received from MS. I've spent $0 on H4 and just got it for free through the same promo.

So let me get this straight.

Living in America gets you:
1) Double exp
2) Specializations
3) A free map pack!

I imagine by Halo 5 the only way to play multiplayer will be by proving you voted in the American Election or something.

I'm getting sick of the design approach/style heavily present in the maps of the past two games where there's super linear and large open ground spaces littered with lazy cover and geometry (random structure, rocks, trees, debris, etc.).

Boneyard
Spire
Breakpoint
Tempest
Highlands
Abandon
Complex
Longbow
Meltdown
Ragnarok
Vortex
Wreckage
Harvest
Shatter

All of these maps suffer from this.

Weird, I can't seem to find the Extraction playlist.
It's also only on Shatter in Crimson DLC, going by the list from last week's bulletin. I haven't even seen it come up. Hiding it behind a paywall is gross.
Also, where is my title update changelog?
Had to dig back a ways through the Waypoint blog full of graphic novel pages, forge tutorials, and map walkthroughs, but here: http://blogs.halowaypoint.com/post/2012/12/06/Halo-4-TU-Change-List.aspx

Weird, I can't seem to find the Extraction playlist.

Its paywalled in the DLC playlist and marketed as a 'new mode' - I doubt it will be in general matchmaking.

I would say Microsoft are being greedy and using it as a marketing ploy... but they have been very generous to Halo fans* with this map pack.

* - not including Halo fans outside America or Halo fans who are stupid enough to pay money in advance.

The things you listed are important an core to good halo gameplay. It's just that the Golden Triangle was defined as guns, grenades, melee. That is what the term refers to. By definition.

I've played them about 2 times each with a variety of gametypes. Please note I need more play time and gametype experience before really making informed comments but here are my initial impressions.

The maps are designed well enough from a flow and graphical stand point but they are really big once again. It felt like I was out of the action and sprinting more than usual. I also wasn't using mobility so I had to sprint two or three times to get back into the action of a battle, join up with team mates or reach an objective/area.

These maps promote vehicles or camping around one location/objective, neither of which are my preferable play style. I can totally understand creating large vehicle maps but doing that for all 3 and all game types as well just seems a little overkill when they are all in one map pack.

Whatever happened to maps that scale based on the number of players? It would be easy to implement really and would help create a duality to basically all maps and gametypes. Create a symmetrical core with small player numbers then unlock a larger asymmetrical surrounding part or upper/lower levels etc.

It just seems like poor decision making for this map pack but I guess the other map pack will cater for differing tastes?

Personally I'm not feeling extraction, it's just another territories derivative. It's no where near assault or CTF quality. It's basically dominion without the base upgrades etc. Also whatever happened to some one sided alternating round objectives? Again it goes to pacing.

All 3 maps feel like BTB sprint or camp choices to me, that or roam in a vehicle and get kills. Maybe I'll change my impression the more I play or play with a regular team as I was just going in solo last night with a population of approx. 400 only.

Wait, what? I thought it was getting a playlist also? Jesus. Am I playing an EA game or something right now? Wtf. Its just been one thing after another.

Do you guys think this map-pack/specialization access code thing will get patched?

I'm amazed they didn't pull the maps yet tbh, Im sure it will, but when and after how many downloads who knows. They really should just make this map pack free as a gift to the community, refund those who bought it and add a new map pack to the season pass if its free for much longer. Unrealistic? Probably.

I want Halo 4 to be popular and good but at the same time I want it to do terrible so they see that as like a wake up call and just change the style back to Halo 2/3.

Are you going to pull Frankie up on the use of the word 'retard' next time you speak or is that only applicable to people who don't post here often/juniors? Frankie uses it all the time (not that it offends me personally).
Well most people here know how I feel about it, but yeah, the use of the word "retard" offends me, Frankie. I just thought you should know since The Henery felt it was necessary to bring up who and who doesn't offend me.

Since the free map pack seems to be tied to the specialization code, maybe, I'll ask again: does anyone want my specialization code?
Don't think it's worth it - seems to be patched. (Just tried it for my son - added a Specialization code, then even went to the trouble of rebooting the Xbox. Still coming up as 800 points.)

"Special Delivery" Achievement - the man cannon is yet again (it's the same for "ODST") not needed, although it is in the description.
i unlocked it by lethally punching an enemy in the crotch while jumping.
