"Have we forgotten about Avatar?"

Avatar is an interesting phenomena as there have been both better and worst movies that have been remembered. I suppose it is truly average in every respect but technology; which is all one needs to attract a visually oriented species.

Because it was just The Last Samurai in space which was Pocahontas in Japan which was Dances with Wolves in The New World or something idk

Because it's an average movie, Pocahontas in space minus the songs, way too long for its own good and only massively successful because of marketing and the pedigree of the director.

Because a sequel shouldn't take more than 3-4 years to make if you want to remain relevant in modern culture.

Because it doesn't have the makings of a cultural phenomenon. Just because a lot of people saw it, doesn't mean it changes the movie landscape at all. Toy Story is a better example of a cultural landmark, with the rise of animated movies.

Also the next sequel is going to be December 2017, with two sequels in 2018 and 2019. Nearly 7 years until the sequel? Fuck that, wake me up when they stop delaying it.

At least 2019 will be godlike with Infinity War Pt. 2 there too

Because the advancement of technology makes entertainment focusing on the spectacle fade from the public conscious faster than entertainment focusing on stories or other aspects.

You can simplify pretty much all stories to similar.

You could simplify Star Wars to: IT'S COWBOYS AND SAMURAI IN SPACE

Ah but see, cowboys and samurais in space is friggin awesome. Who WOULDN'T want to see that? Some sort of patriotic hating monster?

Because it's been 5 fucking years.

We'll all remember it and hype accordingly whenever the Avatar 2 release date is announced.

You can simplify pretty much all stories to similar.

No you can simplify bad stories to similar material.

Tropes and common threads are a thing, but in plenty of cases people at least TRY and wrinkle it a little.... give it some unique flavor. They were clearly not interested in doing that with Avatar. That gave it a level of international universal appeal, but robbed it of being something people would think about long after they left the theatre.

People talked about how amazing the 3D and CG was after they watched the movie, not the story/characters or anything like that.

Which is fine, nothing wrong with that at all. Its just odd to expect it to be 'remembered' 5 years after the fact considering the type of film it was.

the movie ended on a good note. the story ended nicely.

what ELSE is there to explore that won't be a fleeting semblance of a sequel movie deserving another trip to the theater?

EDIT:

fuck that, What would a sequel to Avatar have that warrants another 2 hours of headache inducing 3d glasses?

To date it's still the most bored I've ever been in a cinema. Once the first 15 minutes wore off there was nothing to hold interest.

It was a fairground ride that wouldn't end.

Avatar came out at the perfect time to ride a wave of new enthusiasm for 3D. So it became an event movie that you just had to see in stunning 3D or you were that loser who is in the corner while everyone at the water cooler talks.

That's why its so easily forgotten now. It really was nothing special but circumstances gathered to make it a flash in the pan

Because we're all sad and mad at 3D now, also Kirk Cameron is too busy free diving to the bottom of the ocean to look at mud to make a sequel.

Because it was a rendition of Pocahontas in space with giant blue things? Not really that amazing, though I do agree the 3D visuals were utterly fascinating and a shame no one has copied them.

I didn't give a crap about any of the characters. Does anybody even remember their names? Compare that to, say, Aliens.

To be fair, it was more of an amusement park ride than a film. It was designed to cater to the largest audience possible, so it's understandable that it would end up being a bit shallow.

Dances With Giant Smurfs.

Also - for all the complaining about Charlize 'RUN SIDEWAYS' Theron and Prometheus, why is there so much silence on the interstellar miners not following the sound advice of a previous Cameron movie character and taking off and nuking the hippie drum circle tree from orbit?

I mean seriously - instead of throwing a nuke or asteroid on the tree they fly this incredibly slow, cumbersome transport. Nah, not having it.

It's not forgotten, Disney's even building park attractions based off of this young franchise. People love to hate Avatar but the masses want to revisit Pandora, it's really the only 3D franchise worth a damn. Too early to judge unless Avatarland and sequels are cancelled. Hell, this is the 2nd thread about that article.

The movie that apparently everybody forgot but can't stop bringing up.

The movie that people only went to see for the 3D that is the highest selling 2D bluray of all time.

The movie that everybody hated that almost everybody saw at least twice in theatres.

The sequels that nobody wants but will likely gross $2b or more.
