I played ARMS back in 1996 but it was on PS1 and it was a game called Robo Pit

I played Super Mario Odyssey back in 1996 but it was on N64 and it was a game called Super Mario 64

Finally got a chance to watch the video in the OP.

Yeah, that doesn't really remind me of ARMS. It does remind me a lot of Custom Robo though.

I can see it. I got shades of RAD on PS2, personally. That's a positive.

PS1 library is full of such a oddities, moreso than other systems of the era. Never even heard of this game before. Neat.

PS1 was awesome because you had all these games made without experience or expectations of what 3D games were.

Sure, it didn't look as nice or have an intuitive motion control scheme but the similarities are striking.

Don't get me wrong, I'm really excited for ARMS and I think it's going to be a huge hit but it's interesting to trace back its inspiration.

I was expecting some cool footage of Virtual On and Powerstone and what did I get...??? Nah, that is like posting a video of New Racing X and claiming "I have played Forza Horizon" decades ago!

Thats exactly what I was thinking whenever I play the original Doom games. The levels could be experimental because there was no template. Its fascinating how abstract and unorthodox early 3D games can be.

This is true in general, but I have this game on Saturn. It's not one of the PS1s many unique and weird gems.

This isn't really done with a straight face right? I guess I was right on the "people taking up arms on the sight of Nintendo fanboyism due to a sudden vindication".

I've played games and watched movies that jacked "ALIEN and ALIENS"

Did you know the ending of James Cameron's Titanic jacks "Somewhere in Time"s ending?

Did you know "The Iron Giant" jacked it's ending from the last episode of "Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot"?

We can do this until the end of time.

How about you stop generalizing by putting all the Nintendo fans in the same basket because of some hand picked posters? It's not the first time I see you do that, it's not worth going into post history and all that, but I'm just saying, no ill intentions.

Yes, there are some people that are very defensive, this isn't good either honestly, but generalizing and posting that 'Nintendo fans are this and that' is just not good for a healthy community and contributes to nothing.

I agree with you, but the vocal portion of Nintendo's hardcore fanbase isn't doing the rest of the community any favors.

Their behavior in this thread (and many other threads) is frankly embarrassing.

That's pretty much what I'm saying. Of course, I am not saying that ALL Nintendo fans are like this, and I am a Nintendo fan myself, but, as you say, but there are a lot of embarrassing posts in this thread.

I do agree with both of you. However I think that ignoring these comments would be more effective than underlining them by putting them under the label of 'Nintendo Fans'.

Commish, you said yourself that you are one and I know that you're a reasonable chap, don't put yourself in the same category that you point your finger at.

The term 'Console Warrior' sounds more fitting. :p

Last Nintendo console I bought was Wii, which I thought sucked, and I will never buy a Switch unless it's like $99...and this game does not look or play like what I've seen of ARMS.

I don't get why people calling something out is somehow defensive, when the only thing that fits that is your posts in this thread. The same thread happened with splatoon, with someone dragging out deblob. Why can't people call out dumb opinions without you going console warrior?

Is it really any different than any other hardcore fanbase? I've seen just as bad, if not worse, posts when it comes to From Software or Platinum Games or Sony. It's hardly limited to just Nintendo fans

It's slightly different, IMO. Nintendo is not only a software publisher, but it's also a hardware manufacturer. One with a long, rich and (deservedly) celebrated history of quality video game products.

On top of all that, Nintendo's fortunes took a bit of a commercial and critical downturn in the first part of this console generation (Wii U, and to a lesser extent 3DS), giving it a slightly underdog status. And people love underdogs (Exhibit A: Dreamcast; Exhibit B: Vita; etc etc.)

All of these things combine to create a level of devotion to Nintendo that From Software, Platinum, and Sony could only dream of attaining. Of course this is only my personal observation.

But I don't want to derail this thread, so let's all carry on :)

So what about Sony after the ps3 launch? No built up devotion because reasons?

Ehh...I can see where you're coming from. When Nintendo fanboys go nuts, they go nuts, and being the underdog for 20+ years does play a big part in that, but, Good God, no, man, I haven't seen a fanbase that nearly worships their preferred developer like Platinum or From Software. At the very least, with Nintendo, criticism is more common and considered more acceptable. Just look at how hard the Wii U got and, rightfully so, gets bashed. How their E3s have been criticized. How games like Star Fox Zero and Animal Crossing Amiibo Boogaloo got slayed (Thankfully since I don't want to see them making more of that shit). How people still say 3D World isn't a "real" 3D Mario. I could never get away with criticizing or bashing Sony or any of those golden developers like that. But I guess a lot of does depend on perspective and where you commonly post and lurk

Nah, you're good. Not like you're shitting on anyone

As for Robo Pit, well...it has it's similarities but I feel there are better and closer games to draw comparisons to for Arms

Doesn't matter. Saying that ARMS probably isn't jacking a vaguely similar PS1 game = Nintendo fanboy. Sorry, Bloodporne.

The most embarrassing posts in this thread are the ones that assert that Robo Pit is like ARMS, tenuously.

I'd dispute any of the like analogies posted in this thread with as much fervor. The 'Nintendo fan' whining is unwarranted. You'd see this sort of reaction in an "I played Uncharted 4 over 10 years ago and it was a game called Kill-Switch" thread, too.

It doesn't take much to be a 'Nintendo fan' these days. Shit is getting ooooold fast.
