Great trailer!! Man, so good. Next up is a gameplay trailer. But they have my interest now, which was a good trailer is supposed to do.

And why do people say there are too many zombie games? How many are there really? LFD2, Dead Rising? Plus zombie modes in some other games?

I love zombies personally, bring more zombie games!!! I want Zombie street fighter.

I whole-heartedly agree with you. I just hope it's not "oh look a mall! oh and here's a casino. and another mall...and a casino again but this one has a fountain!". If the screenshots are to be believed, then it's all gravy. O course they could go over the top crazy with it and as you're running down the sands of the beach to outrun the zombie mob, a zombie shark pops out of the water to get you. Let's hope not.

Trailer was awesome when did games stop giving a fuck about showing kids die?

Fallout 1 and 2 let you kill children and gave you a perk for doing it.

Heart of Darkness had the kid character die in various ways: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYyZfME5XYY

There was that infamous screen from an early version of Fable showing you driving a sword through a kid's head. (Can somebody find this online?)

Prey showed living, non-zombie kids dying in scripted sequences.

Limbo had your silhouette kid character die in various ways: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7z60YyuJsk

Dead Space had baby necromorphs and Dead Space 2 added another 2 varieties of child necromorphs.

for those moaning about the (awesome) trailer not being indicative of the game, surely we learnt as much from that as we would a stupid hollywood style trailer which shows tiny clips of in game action meshed into one incoherent mess.

What we learnt was the setting, some of the cast, what the zombies were like, how far the game was willing to go, that its going to be brutal and how ambitious it is. In general it just set the tone - which is a darn sight more helpful than say a shot of a melee combo then a shot of jumping over a fence then a shot of opening a door and finishing with a shot of getting killed. All those scenes taken out of context could be in any game ever and leaves you with nothing.

Did we? I could have sworn we learned nothing at all. We have no reason to assume the game's tone is anything like this trailer, or that it is in any way indicative of what the game will be like. As for learning what the zombies are like, we learned they're fucking zombies. I didn't need a trailer to tell me the zombies in the zombie game act like zombies.

It was well done as a short animated piece using some sort of game art/assets, and it was effective marketing. It isn't informational in the least though.

edit: Those kids in Fallout 2 deserved to die. I wear my Childkiller badge proudly. Little thieving bastards.

Well IGN is hell-bent on keeping themselves in the quality basement at least, but yet got some people's hopes up for nothing again.

But will a first-person melee combat action game with RPG elements really work?

I don't know... did the Elder Scrolls series work?

Including a former rapper named Sam B (the only character revealed so far).

Not anymore. Xianmei or Xian Mei & Xian-Mei (depends of how is written correctly ) is the second. Reference to the girl in red dress and white shirt with machete.

I don't have anything against this game personally, but... is it time for the next me-too gaming meme yet?

Five years of zombies... :(

that's what trailers are dude, don't watch a trailer/advertisement and moan that its not a preview or quick look.

if you watched that video and came away knowing nothing more than you knew going in, you're just refusing to take on information because you're probably too busy being offended at the lack of gameplay shown.

those zombies were nothing like zombies in any other game, maybe RE 4 or 5 is close but I don't recall anyone ever getting bitten and coming back as a zombie.

I'm gonna repeat myself, we learnt about:

a) location and environments
b) cast
c) hint at a story
d) hint at combat style
e) awesome example of how things go from being in your safehouse to suddenly fucked up. Something no zombie game has ever come close to capturing before.

As many people have said, the zombie genre has never really been done properly, zombies are all about how a group of humans desperately try to survive but some part of their humanity will always smash a hole in the defences. In this case, they had to let their kid in. The fact the developers focused on this aspect shows a level of understanding that speaks volumes and makes me very excited for the game.

Now I dont know about anyone else, but I hadn't heard of this game before I saw the trailer and I came away being able to write this many words about it. So dont tell me people ddnt learn anything about the game from this trailer.

p.s. sure I dont know details about how it will play, but no 2 minute trailer will give me that info anyway and if they had dished up 3 minutes of slow mo in game action I wouldnt have learnt 90% of the above not to mention the important bit which is - this game is trying to do zombies RIGHT.

We didn't learn about any of that. For all we know, these characters are not in the game. Hell, every single one of them is dead by the end of the trailer. We didn't see a hint at a combat style other than zombie melee combat and since this wasn't gameplay, we don't know if the in game combat will resemble it. We knew all of this without the trailer. Zombie melee combat survival game was all we knew about the game, along with location and environments which were kind of revealed with the whole Island word being in the title and all.

I'll say again that the trailer did its job and got people talking about the game, but it did nothing to give any information about the game other than the title and a ten word synopsis would.

Here's what we learned: Zombies kill people, and people turn into zombies then attack their friends. Also, there are axes involved and a door will be broken. Wow, they sure are turning the zombie genre on its head.

I'm not saying it will be bad, I'm saying we have absolutely no more clue about anything important to this game than we did before the trailer.

They promised a great trailer and we got a great trailer. Oh the humanity.

The fools whining about the trailer are hilarious.

Fantastic trailer that creates an immense buzz about a game that was all but dead. Game is now on the radar.

All this from a trailer that doesn't even show game footage.... Compare that to all the shitty 10 second 'teaser' trailers that are just the name of the game and a company logo.

If this had been from some big name studio everyone would be jizzing themeselves. Now some people are strangely butthurt that a small outfit outshines the shitty COD etc. reveal trailers.

Wow, that preview pretty much took all the intrigue Dead Island had going for it and made it sound really "gamey." Geh, at least the arm controls sound interesting but come on, open a door and there is an unusually large zombie behind it? Really?

Somebody make a decent survival game that isn't about getting to safe rooms. Give me some I Am Legend.
-Randomly generated maps.
-Enemies that aren't closet monsters and don't need bosses to be terrifying.
-Resource gathering.

Love how much the assumptive, IGN hatin' haters were proven wrong. This trailer was picked up on Aintitcoolnews (saying it's probably the best trailer you'll see all year, feature films included) and lots of other none game related sites.

EAT IT. Eat it ALL you haters. I'm hatin' on the haters.

Not saying IGN is great, just saying that keep an open mind you freaks. :p

That's in your opinion that it was "a great trailer", no humanity on anyone' s part.

IGN promised a great tralier and that was delivered. They didn't get our hopes up for nothing. I came in expecting a great tralier and thats what i got.

Oh I remember this game. It was announced in 2007 but they didn't have a publisher at the time.

I've been wondering what happened to this game. All I remembered was that the premise was great.

I was expecting some kind of dudebro trailer and the real trailer caught me off guard. Pretty emotional :/

So now its 4 player co-op huh? and its multiplatform? PS3 version here I (and my friends) come :D

suck it L4D3 :p

Ughhhh. So, so, so very forced "artsy/sad" trailer. That so many of you are eating this crap up is kind of annoying. Ok trailer maybe. "Artistic godsend best trailer ever" because they point in a sad song and showed a dead child boohoo, bleh.
Maybe if it wasn't so hyped I wouldn't be so annoyed...

I'm... assuming this is supposed to be a criticism, but I'm not quite sure how it's supposed to make any sense.

Fine, so I don't come off as a "pro troll," how about this: the trailer was clearly gunning on a strong emotional reaction. It's a shame that they simply decided to do this in such a blatant and forced way, by going with "it's sad because it's a little girl" as the crux instead of something with actual meat to it, and slapping a sad song over-top of things. Add in a backwards-play "gimmick" that doesn't really seem to contribute in any meaningful way, outside of making a few parts of the trailer look unintentionally silly (though that may be the fault of the animation not the effect) and it just seems like it's trying too hard to be "artsy." Add in a little bit of awkward animation/modeling here and there, and I can't help but feel disappointed in something that everybody was claiming to be some sort of masterpiece.
Perhaps my tone was a little over the top in the last post as I had just had a bit of an argument on the subject in real life, but I still hold that this trailer really doesn't deserve the praise that it is receiving.

Yes, god forbid a game from a foreign and nearly-unknown developer gets any sort of attention.
Techland is not known for quality, hell, I even beta tested one of their games and they couldn't even afford to host the files.

Call of Juarez was good though; one of their best.

You seem upset.

Wish there was more to say, but there isn't. People like it. You don't. Opinions. Get the fuck over it.

The words elitist, pretentious and artsy should be stricken from the English vocabulary. Those are what you call dead-end words. They mean little, and they lead discussion nowhere.

Heh. They used to have a place in legitimate debate, but they have so much baggage these days that it's nearly impossible to take seriously any argument based upon them.

Keep the kids out of the killing. I was turned off immediately.

Nothing ingame. Boring.

All this trailer showed was that it was another zombie game.
