Indie Games [May] Now Voting - Post 385!

Toma

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
That's the whole list? Must've been a short issue.

Haha, I am sure the list contained plenty of games that were rather well known and Baddy only listed the ones that people in this thread wouldnt necessarily already know :p

No, there was like 150 freeware games mentioned throughout the issue, along with previews of upcoming indies, reviews of every major indie from the last two/three years, in-depth articles on Dwarf Fortress, Minecraft, and other games, the future of indie development, etc.

It's a really big $20 issue. I was only skimming and looking for games I had never heard of or sounded like they had cool concepts. I was also killing time waiting for a Godzilla showing so I didn't get a chance to read the whole issue in-depth, probably missed a lot

Edit: checked online, actually it had first released back in January, curious that it was still stocked on the shelves

I was in Barnes & Noble today and what luck, PC Gamer had a Guide to Indie Games special issue. Discovered a whole bunch of cool free games I had never heard of. Some of them are a few years old. Here's the list, will properly format later

Siseon
Valentinel Hopes
Unmanned
Cities of Day and Night
Trauma
X0ut
Farsh
Three Body Problem
Fistful of Gun
400 Years

Trauma is a neat little adventure game. Short and easy but I liked the way it was played and it has an interesting story.

I know I've been neglecting these threads, just wanted to say I've played quite a lot of Luftrausers on my Vita. Perfect Vita game, in fact. Loving so much all the indie love going on on Vita, in general.

I also just tried Mini Metro and liked it a lot!

From the upcoming games, I really, really wish Flying Hamster II makes it. Looks like an awesome Wonder Boy-like.

The Super Hot KS is going super hot well, I'm so happy. <3 Though I do wonder why they're so hesitant to add console stretch goals. Surely that's something to think about after 200k has been reached.

Yet another promising indie Kickstarter: Witchmarsh

Am I bad for preferring a true detective-style adventure game in that setting, like I always do when I read the word "mystery"? Probably. :p

Game still looks great, though!

Well, they said they'll add more stretch goals at 150k, and I'd say anything up to 300k might not be unreasonable.

So, I've thrown about two hours into Secrets of Grindea, and it's actually really, really good. I was expecting something that hit that "decent but forgettable" mark, but it's far exceeded my expectations.

The combat feels great and seems to already have a pretty wide range of options. Maybe I got lucky with my choices, but every skill/ability that I've picked up has done well in terms of both being useful and distinct. The writing's been a pleasant surprise too. I generally roll my eyes at that lazy, "nudge and a wink" trope acknowledgement that a lot of games use as a crutch in place of actually having good writing, but it works really well here. Laughed more than once. The bag companion is great, too. And, I'm right at a point where the story takes an unexpected turn and I'm interested in seeing where it's going.

Overall, definitely worth checking out if you're a Secret of Mana/general ARPG fan. Not sure if co-op is in yet, and I don't have anyone to play with regardless, but I'm positive it'd be a blast.

Hardland - PC
Hardland-Screenshot-01-Small.png

http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=40541.0

Hardland is an upcoming action adventure game. We want to make it a place full of characters and creatures each with their own wants, needs and ways of working. Everything, from the creation of the world to the behavior of animals, operates by their own set of rules. This makes each play experience unique. We don't want to tell the player a story - we want the player to tell their own.

Dandy - ????
tumblr_mtcvuqsDNh1qzv6o1o1_1280.png

http://dandygame.tumblr.com/

What is Dandy?
If you’re a gamer the answer is sort of easy because genre names and game comparisons are inherently easy to describe, “Dandy is a horizontal schmup done as a rogue-like” or “Dandy is a slowed down, pensive Gradius.”
“Dandy is a game where you kill monsters by solving puzzles.” I think that gets closer but it’s also kind of confusing. Dandy isn’t a puzzle game
“You’re a candy wizard fighting hordes of monsters to discover new ingredients,” doesn’t even scratch the surface of what Dandy is

Hardland is sort of confusing me. Their TIGSource devlog has pixel art, voxels, and traditional 3D models. Maybe it would help if I knew what the game was about? Anyone play Minigore?

Also, dropped a buck on Sarcia. I'll write something about it later.

Orbital Gear- PC

Orbital Gear is a multiplayer shooter where you utilize the gravitation of celestial objects to give your mech momentum through space. Arm your Mech with two of the twelve different weapons to destroy your enemies. Orbital Gear features classic multiplayer gameplay with new mechanics and 3D graphics.

Looks like Orbital Gear just went into beta. It's giving me Soldat vibes and that can only be a good thing. They're giving out keys now.

Minigore is a hectic dual stick shooter on IOS. This looks like it'll have similar combat with RPG depth and exploration

From what I understand, the voxels are just temporary visuals as they refine animations, etc.

Here's a short breakdown of the asset creation process, let's say we want to create a fox character.

Workflow-Screenshot-00.png

1. Pixel art concept is drawn in front view to make the next step easier.
2. Copy and paste the pixel art into Qubicle Constructor and extrude it as a 3d volume.
Then define the main forms and split the model so you've got separate head, legs, body and tail.
3. Import the voxel asset into Blender. Add bevel modifier and cast modifier.
At this point it's good to animate the basic moves: Idle, walk, run, attack, block, take damage, death.

TEST THE MODEL IN THE ACTUAL GAME, IF IT’S FUN AND WORKS PROCEED TO THE NEXT STEP.

4. You now have a better idea what worked well and what didn't on that particular character.
It's time to paint the concept art for the final version.
5. This is how the final model looks like in the game.
It was modeled in Blender and Zbrush and textured in Photoshop.

Almost forgot to leave a quick recommendation for Scram Kitty, an eShop original (on WiiU). Fantastic indie title with rather unique mechanics. Very polished and quite challenging, as well.

Felt obliged to mention it here. Hope it comes to PC at some point so that more people get to play it.

And it would certainly need that. Minigore lacked any depth, honestly.

What was the name of the game where you're in an art museum, it's all about visual illusions, you can see the paintings follow your sight lines and have 3D to them?

Crashed Lander - $7, Free demo (PC, Mac, Linux)
CrashedLanderBigThumbnail.jpg

Outwit gravity. Race the clock. Explore new worlds.
Crashed Lander is a gravity-based arcade game inspired by classics like Lunar Lander and Space Taxi. You'll pilot your craft from pad to pad trying to beat your best time – then flirt with that fine line between speed and control.
If you’re brave enough to try Hard Mode you’ll be flopping around like a QWOPy, low gravity turtle. With a little practice you’ll be zippin' around doin' barrel rolls.

Finally finished Kentucky Route 0 Act III yesterday. I still have no clue what the fuck is going on, but I'm really digging it. It's such a beautiful game and I love the characters.

CrossCode
I'm definitely going to be following CrossCode closely from now on. While the current game is only a demo, it's an extremely promising and polished demo and I can't wait to play more. The controls are tight, the animations and combat is fluid and challenging, a mix of hectic ranged attacks, evasion dodging, and close-up melee. The core mechanics seem simple at the moment, but the varied enemies and different hazards and the ability to ricochet shots makes each new area exciting and fun.

The Last Night
The Last Night is short, so there isn't much to say about the gameplay, but for such a compact piece of game, the atmosphere is absolutely fantastic. The pixel art, the lighting, the subtle details, the animations, the environments, all coalesce to bring to life its gritty Blade Runner-esque world. Not sure how the game could be expanded, but even if it's just walking through more of these wonderfully designed areas, I'd be happy. I recommend giving The Last Night a try.

New Gunpoint beta is out, Steam Workshop support and a new engine.

Short version
We’re nearly ready to release an update for Gunpoint that’ll add Steam Workshop support to let you share your custom levels, and hopefully fix any remaining technical issues people are having with the old build.
Before we send it out to everyone, it’d be helpful if you guys could give it a try and see if you encounter any issues. Here’s how:
1. Right click Gunpoint in your Steam menu and click Properties.
2. Go to the Betas tab, and under ‘Enter access code’ type: workshopbeta
3. You should now be able to choose the Steam Workshop Beta from the list there.
4. Click close, and Gunpoint should update. Might take a second before the download starts.
5. While you wait, join this Steam group.
You need to be a member of that group for Steam Workshop to work in this beta, but it won’t be necessary once the update goes public.
If it fixes anything or breaks anything for you, or just to tell us how it works out, post in this thread!

Almost time! Transistor review embargo lifts at noon

A few reviews have leaked. Tom Chick gave the game a 2/5, some blog gave it a 3/5 because it's "too complex" for causal players (but praised everything else), and Gamereactor's review was removed but the score was an 8/10

Wasn't the biggest fan of Bastion, so I'll wait on a price drop. It's getting great scores though.

I'm not sure how it will run on my laptop, I'm guessing poorly, looking at the requirements. I desperately want to play it, but without a PS4, I seem to be out of luck.

Probably one of the most beautiful games of all time, btw.
