Console sales are important because you lock players into your ecosystem and sell them things on your store, but the console itself almost never makes profit unless you are Nintendo. Did you know that Sony makes accessories like PSVR2, PS Portal, PS Camera, etc? How would that work in a world where they don't put the console first?

They've got a PlayStation Mobile division and they have actual PlayStation studios making those games (Valkyrie Entertainment is one for example) as well as Bungie and the currently announced Neon Koi.
They've bought a PC porting specialist.
They've been developing Project Chronos for streaming. They've also got PS Portal out there that is basically screaming for Chronos integration. iOS and Android phones also have alternatives such as backbone or Dualsense compatibility.
Once Chronos is expanded then we'll see it launched as part of the app for sticks and smart TVs etc.
That'll be a much broader net for the PlayStation store, digital content and subscriptions.
Leveraging their other entertainment options is also wise.

Our PS5 is already boxed up. Just have to make the drive Gamestop. I'm keeping at least one of the Dual Sense controllers. I really like that controller.

No, you got this backwards. The biggest money makers by far are PS+ subscriptions and microtransactions. Hardware sales are a portion and are there to serve as a gateway to the Playstation ecosystem. Sony is now looking at way to attract people to the Playstation ecosystem without relying on the consoles.
Look at this. PSN+MTX make up almost 50% of their revenues. If they manage to expand onto other devices, they would represent an even bigger part.

This is basically what xbox has been doing in relatiion to things like smart delivery, cloud gaming, and working towards different channels of distribution emerging in society from technological advances in core industries. What some refer to as Industry 4.0, and the idea that we are experiencing a fourth industrial revolution right now.
