LttP: Jet Grind Radio vs. Jet Set Radio Future

Naganuma has a very distinct style.

Pretty sure I bought Sonic Rush on account of his involvement.

And for those keeping score, the best songs are The Concept of Love and Teknopathetic.

(Also loved the US exclusive tracks on JGR, like Jurassic 5's and Dragula.)

I know I did buy Sonic Rush because of his involvement.

And neither of those are Grace and Glory.

And what was with doing all the extra localization work, and yet not translating, or even just captioning, the meaning of "uki uki waku waku feeling"?
I loved that they never bothered to translate it, it helped with the quirky nature of the game.

I've always been kinda miffed we haven't seen a new JGR/JSR this generation. :/

Anyways, there's no reason not to play both.

Holy crap, I was just playing these two today. Honestly, it's JSRF. I think those who say JGR are viewing it through nostalgia eyes. The controls in JGR just aren't responsive enough, and the game can be really annoying with the cops disrupting the flow of the action constantly. JSRF just had bigger levels to explore, better controls, and more fluid action.

I never mentioned either way in the OP, but I very very much prefer JSRF to JGR. I've always found JGR's controls to be very clunky. I also dislike constantly mashing the R trigger button off and on to move at the pace the game expects me to move at. I very much prefer just having a boost based on your spray cans to the awkward boost in JGR. I also feel JGR tried to be too realistic in regards to play movement with roller blades, at least in comparison to JSRF. Tagging in JGR was clunky and awkward and I never cared for it.

As far as character designs, I feel Cube, Mew/Rhyth, and Boogie were better in JGR, but everyone else was much better in JSRF. Its a mixed bag either way, but at least Yo-Yo, my favorite character, looks awesome in JSRF compared to his weird gnomish look in JGR.

The blue is almost much better than the puke green.

Jet Set Radio Future has a much better art style overall as well. I can't think of a single level in Jet Grind Radio that I enjoy over any of the areas in JSRF. Speaking of areas...

The level design and open world of JSRF blows away everything in JGR. I don't know how anyone can not feel awesome taking on tanks in Chuo Street or grinding on a roller coaster in Sky Dinosaurian Square. I will admit that the way JSRF handled police wasn't particularly good. I like the fact that you combat them, but they should be constantly patrolling the stage and respawning when you kill them. I would still describe JSRF as the best nonlinear collectathon platformer ever made.

The music in both are fantastic in both, though I can't stand Birthday Cake in JSRF or the Numetal in JGR. Seriously, remove those songs and combine both soundtracks and I'm perfectly content.

Overall, they're both really good games and compared to each other they're mixed bags. Neither game completely blows the other out of the water in every regard. That said, Jet Set Radio Future is still the better game and my favorite game of all time.

They're just ever so slightly different. This is someone who replayed both at the start of this year and had no problems with either (it may just be because I play as Mew)

And the cops showing up is nowhere near as bad as replaying boring ass deathball three times, and then having tag up 100 dudes or whatever.
JSRF's ending missions are 3D Sonic bad.

Grace and Glory was basically God-Tier for me on both OSTs...

After reading this I realised I never properly listened to the JSRF version of Grace and Glory.

My god.

The only problem I have with the later missions is the Noise Tank b.s.

The last boss is awesome just because of how crazy the environment is.

Future. JGR hasn't aged well, as already stated by previous posters, JGR controls aren't responsive enough. It's so hard to land on some handrails and perform even the most basic tricks...

30 fps (vs 60 fps in Future) and pop-up I can forgive, but bad controls and gameplay, no.

Last boss in JSRF is definitely better than the also crazy JSR one.
I do wish there was more challenge to the actual fight beyond mastering the grind rails though.

It was already amazing, and somehow, Naganuma made it even more awesome. I was in awe the first time I heard it.

Does anyone know where the staff members are now and what they had worked on after JGR and JSRF?

Also, those living in Japan or know a bit about the different cities.. what are the areas based on? A few years back I watched a Japanese movie that had a little neighborhood that reminded me of the sunset area in JGR where all of the little houses were so close to each other on a hill.

Jet Grind Radio was just crap. The controls were crap, the cities and missions were crap, constantly having to avoid the police was crap and having to waggle the joystick around randomly to tag things was crap. Future had some issues too but overall it was very fun to skate around exploring the large, impressively designed levels looking for secrets and things to tag while chilling to the awesome soundtrack except for Cibo Matto.

I disagree with everything you said, except the JRSF cities were fun to explore and bigger. And I love cibo matto, too.

I liked the character design in JSR better than in the second game, and I loved being able to plaster my own images (downloaded with the dreamcast browser) on the walls. Especially the time I painted a giant mural with gay porn and my mom entered the room without knocking. Good times. (she already knew, but it was a bit embarrassing)

I don't give a single fuck how blasphemous my opinion is, Future is better. The only thing it lacked were the QTEs. But their absence made the game much faster.

Also, thanks for making a JSR thread. The series cannot get enough love.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Jet Set Radio was the better game, though I like like both games for different reasons. Jet Set Radio was great because it was all about speeding through the stages while evading the cops, and getting through the levels as quickly as possible. It was basically an arcade game. Jet Set Radio Future was an adventure game. It had you scouring much larger areas for stuff to tag, and there was no longer any sort of time pressure on you, and the police didn't chase you in the main stages. I do prefer Jet Set Radio's gameplay, but I still like Future a lot and appreciate that it was genuinely different, rather than a rehash.

Now as far as soundtracks go, it's a toss-up. I love me some Electric Toothbrush and Funky Radio, but I also dig Aisle 10 and Like a Butterfly.

If anyone hasn't played both games, they're a failure.

Jet Set Radio is so perfect for today's open world game trend I have no idea why Sega hasn't brought it back.

As mentioned, both games have had abysmally poor sales. Conservative estimates of JSRF are around 30-60 thousand copies world wide.

Because they're SEGA.

Honestly, I'd rather have the franchise stay dead than SEGA to bring it back and fuck it all up.

Princess Skittles already has the hots for me since I promised if I win the lottery, I'd get the rights to the game and rehire every SmileBit employee to make a new game.

JSR was mainly Shibuya. The bus station at the start, the sewers and stuff.

Was very cool seeing it when I visited Tokyo.

There are probably a few million copies in circulation due to it being a pack in game for the Xbox in the US for some time. Most people probably just ignored it though. It really wasn't a good fit for the Xbox audience.

Just a bit of a footnote too, Kuju did pitch making a new JSR for Wii in 2006, but Sega turned them down.

Concept art here

That concept stuff was ugly so no wonder they turned it down. Good on Sega. The last thing they need is another Nights/Golden Axe BR fiasco. I'd love to see a new JSR, but I don't have much faith that it would turn out well. It's not like it makes sense for Sega either, the games simply don't sell.

I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of JSR. Art direction, gameplay and MUSIC. Anyone else remember the "Graffiti is Art" promo SEGA ran?

http://www.gamespot.com/dreamcast/action/jetgrindradio/news.html?sid=2642797

Those were the days . . . .

Anyone know if the graffiti of JSR was ripped? I think I would like an avatar out of some of that.

JSRF was one of the first games i got on my X-box, but I can't say I enjoyed it as much as the first. I can't really think of any of the songs off the top of my head or any of the levels. Still enjoyed DJ Prof. K though.

Through some weird fluke, the Sega Store shipped my copy of Jet Grind Radio like two weeks earlier than the release date. I remember being confused why virtually all of the online aspects in-game were almost totally empty, or just had "Test" entries, like I believe there was a board for tags people made and such. I figured it was just broken or I was missing something.

So of course, one of the first things I did was go through their form and make a porn spray. Oops.

In the minority for sure but I love Future way more. Yeah, it rhymes.

Anyway, I never had much fun with JSR beyond the first hour or so. It became a chore after that with awkward tagging and police EVERYWHERE. JSRF simplified everything so that it was about seeing where you could get with a million times less stress. It was just so much more chilled. I loved it. And it has a better soundtrack.

the original is better in every aspect. Music in JGR is a lot better too. There is nothing on JSR that is better. But it is obviously a cool game though.

Going down a bullet list of all points, I would definitely check off most of them in favor of the original JSR. But IMO JSRF corrected two major flaws from the first game: the fucking time limit, and the immortal enemies. As awesome as JSR was, those two things stepped on the fun factor. If not for those two aspects, JSR would be an easy hands-down winner. If there was an updated version of JSR that was basically the original game with no time limits and killable enemies, I wouldn't give half a damn about JSRF.

So basically kill any tension that added to the fun of the first game? The first game, not unlike other Sega games, were made with arcade like gameplay. The score system and timer offers incentive to get better at the game to get higher scores and unlock sweet things.

I think this was appropriate?

Quite indubitably.

Gamers can't handle anything that requires them to not suck at games these days.

Really? Is ad hominem-ing everyone who prefers Future as people who suck at games and can't stand it appropriate? Not cool.
