Mafia 3 |OT| "Family isn't who you're born with, it's who you die for"

Looks like they removed real time shadow casting from car lights with the latest patch. Can anybody confirm or is it just a bug on my PC?

This game seems... shitty. Everything just feels kind of sloppy and janky. My boat pancakes on a bunch of invisible walls, for example. The atmosphere, story, and such seem great, but I'm not sure how much game I can tolerate to get to it.

So I am enjoying my time with the game so far, but I feel like I'm not understanding something about when you are taking over a racket and needing to do 'damage' to bring out the boss.

I inevitably hit the damage threshold to bring out the boss after just a couple of objectives. Being a semi-completionist - I keep going through the other optional objectives. However, I'm wondering if this is actually doing anything additional for me?

Is there _any_ benefit to continuing to complete the objectives for damage _after_ you have done enough damage to lure out the boss?

Not unless you can get some money from the other objectives or you want to make sure the lieutenants are taken out and can't backup their racket boss.

Perfect. That's what I suspected, but didn't want to miss out on something - or be limiting my overall 'earn' once I had taken over the racket by not disrupting other areas.

Seems like the best course of action is to take out the lieutenants, and one of the larger money operations - then just move on. Some of the objectives are really repetitive, which is what finally got me to ask. On the other hand though, does seem like this will make the story move along quicker. I've put in several hours, but only now working with Burke because I've been focusing on completing every optional objective.

Thanks for confirming!

No problem. You can also help your earn by going after the informants and sparing them. They add money once you take over the racket.

You basically haven't even started the game yet at that point. Once you get through that and the world opens up, you'll find it to be one of the better controlling open world games. That being said, the latest PS4 patch has me convinced they either slowed the camera around Lincoln, or just made him feel heavier. It's not making feel as perfect as it was before.

Ah yes! I'd been doing that just as a by product of completing everything, so thanks for the reminder on the informants. Lieutenants and informers are the priority. Good deal.

I watched a three hour long video of all mafia's cut scenes on IGN's channel. Shit played out like a movie. It was damn awesome.

When I see it at the $20 price, ill purchase it even though I have zero intentions of playing it.

It was definitely early impressions. That said, even after finishing the first three parts of the city, they haven't changed too much. Everything still has a b-studio feel to it. In particular, the vehicles are absolutely loathsome to drive. It reminds me of GTA4 where anytime you had a driving mission or saw an objective far away, you let out a groan. I tried to hit a witness after stealing a car and the car took damage and the witness just slid along in front of it, completely unharmed. Woof.

Just finished it. After a while, probably several hours, I got into the rhythm of the missions, got my sick hot rod and a shotgun, and just played for little bursts at a time.

My enjoyment increased sevenfold. Not giving its flaws a free pass by any means, but damn this games story, writing, voice acting and characters are incredible.

And holy shit that credits scene. I'm now looking forward to the dlc and a sequel, which I was not expecting.

Glad the patch addressed the crazy sky and crashing, my 2 biggest issues. Much more stable and consistent experience now.

I was wondering if this was just the patch or if it was the pro. I just swapped data before I booted up again and I was floored how much better the entire image looked.

just finished as well. much better game than the reviews'd lead you to believe. i mean, yeah, there're aspects that're repetitive, but 1) never soooo much that it's like pain-inducing or something, & 2) it's basically something that could be said about all game, to a certain extent, as that's fundamentally the nature of most games...

anyway, a genuine gem (much like mad max last year), & highly recommended. I mean, damn, just the soundtrack alone justifies 'experiencing' this game :) ...

Did you switch the driving mode to simulation? It's way better.

How's the game running on PS4? I picked it up on launch day but decided to wait until a few patches were released to start playing. Would you guys and gals say it's safe to go?

I think the performance was fine on console at launch? The most significant technical complaints were on PC, most of the other complaints (repetitive design, poor AI, etc) weren't problems that will be fixed with patches. What made you stop playing on PS4 to wait for patches?

A friend of mine experienced a few crashes at launch with the PS4 version.

So uh... about the new clothes, I just tried one and thought it was a good excuse to do the side missions, and here's what happened :

The game showed the new clothes during the cutscenes. That would be normal for any open world game, but I thought Mafia 3 cutscenes were in-engine but pre-rendered ? Even the Digital Foundry told it. Did they change that with the new ps4 patch ?

Some of the cutscenes in the game are pre-rendered, other, smaller scenes for sidequests and the like use the regular in-game model and overall look less impressive. The latter would show your customized clothing.

I'm not sure but the cutscene in the screenshot seems as good as the main quest ones. But I might be mistaken.

Well, got a lot of free time last night, and today and pretty much played all day. Up until now, it was shorter bursts to not let the monotony set in, but yeah, when you play non stop for a few hrs on end, it really, really drags.

Cleared out three districts today, I think I'm down to two? I'm downtown clearing that out and I see two more markers in another area to start the initial convo for the district, but nothing else, unless you take over the bayou down south of everything. Kind of ready for it to end, its been a much better game than the gaffer impressions led to believe, and the latest patch really improved the IQ on the game. Looks great on the Pro.

But, Watch Dogs 2 is tempting me, so this will be traded in soon.

Just finished the game.

It's fun but tedious. Definitely would have been better if you assigned a racket to an underboss they would help with the second one in the district to help speed things up. They could take out an enforcer for you while you take out the other or whatever. Didn't really feel like the underbosses did much except for the perk system which I would have preffered to just be an independent system.

On that topic, didn't really feel much for my underbosses in general.

I don't know if its still spoilers by now but ending spoilers:

I chose to take the throne and have them all rule with me. The ending cutscene should have included them in some capacity. Just felt really underused.

Thought for sure they would make an appearance in the final mission as well.

I did all the fucking work and they expect me to share my empire? Should have been an option where I can use my own cronies to handle territory. While I put a bullet in their heads.

Donovan and Lincoln did become one of my favorite character pairs in recent memory. Glad they're doing an expansion that focuses on them.

warning! there seems to be a missable collectible. i'm talking about the second vargas in the casino, the one in the room
where you confront giorgi
. this seems to be the only room in the whole damn game that you can't re-enter after completing the story?...

fuck me :( ...

Also completed the game few days ago, 39 hours played. While I agree pretty much every criticism that's been given to this game in the reviews. Would score it about 8 myself. Thought it was a good game with some unfortunate big flaws. The mission repetition would had been easy fix, just cut down the amount of money you need to get before boss comes up.

Did you switch the driving mode to simulation? It's way better.

Yup, had fun time driving in this game.

Finished the game last night.

End Game Spoilers Question:
How will they inject the season pass content into the story line if you've already beaten the game and chose to Leave Town or Rule Alone? I know you can continue to play after finishing the game, but it really won't make sense from a plot standpoint if you didn't choose to Rule Together.

The game as a whole was a bit monotonous after a while, but I enjoyed it for what it was. The soundtrack was top notch, driving was superb, and shooting was fantastic. The story really made this game and made up for the rest of its short comings.

They could work around that by making it
a flashback. Technically the entire game is a flashback, so the basic premise is already there.

I've changed clothes 3 times since the patch, and I'm always wearing the new clothes in every cutscene I've seen after putting in another 15 or so hours this weekend.

I guess that would make sense. It would just feel weird to me. Like, "Oh by the way, these things also happened during Lincoln Clay's reign of terror on New Bordeaux, we just neglected to mention it before."

I suppose since the game reloads to the point prior to making the final choice if you chose either of those two options, the season pass content could fit into that window.

Bought it on steam near launch, but wanted to wait for a couple of patches before I dive in. Apart from
technical fixes, is there any chance future patches/ dlcs improve the general gameplay or decrease the monotony?

Enjoyed the world and story, music, cars etc.

Just got too tedious for me to finish. Too many other games out or coming soon. Shame.

Was hoping this would scratch that Sleeping Dogs / GTAV itch for me. Didn't. Maybe Watchdogs 2 can.

so I'm assuming this doesn't get any less repetitive? I've done the repetitive stuff 3 times, had
some kind of meeting with the recruited people
and now have to.. do it all over again? loved Mafia 2, looking forward to this game since next-gen became a thing, but what a let down..

You're going to do the same thing over and over again till the end, for every district. The only solution is playing little by little and try different approaches.

How many districts are there? I just took the first one, so I assume I'm pretty far off..

6 districts
2 rackets each plus one district leader.

You'll effectively be doing the exact same thing 18 times over, very often visiting the same location twice.

Finished the game last week. Yes the game had problems, technical issues and was repetitive. But at the end I feel it was worth it, fantastic story and characters and I actually ended up feeling empathy for the antagonist towards the end.

Glad to hear the game sold well, here's hoping for Mafia 4 is set in Vegas.

The combat feels so good in this. I just
freed Vito
so I guess I have long ways to go. I just follow the objectives and actually have no idea what all this district and racket stuff means. Will it be important sometime? Because I feel it has zero effect on my playthrough so far.

Rackets and districts will affect the loyalty of your lieutenants as well as affect their income which in turns affects your perks from them. It doesn't mean much because you still have freed
Vito
. Will start to mean more after everyone has their initial district and you need to assign more.

Do I have to wiretap in order to beat the game?

It seems like a tedious way of making you explore the map

Am I missing out on much if I skip it?

I don't care for collectibles in game, but if you told me just to do enough to make the game easier, I'd be willing to do it

If you wiretap the area where a racket boss is, you can recruit him instead of kill him. This adds additional money to your racket income. Plus wiretapping an area reveals enemy positions automatically.

But since money is 100% useless in this game and you get a perk from Vito super early on that automatically marks enemies even without wiretap it's pretty much a waste of time. Certainly to collect them all and wiretap all sectors of the map. I can't even imagine how long that must take.

It's an ancient gameplay mechanic as busywork to add some artificial longevity to a game with zero side activities other than collecting random shit.

I didn't mind the wire tapping, but having to constantly hunt down the scrap needed to do it was obnoxious. Just let me pry open the box and be done with it.

I basically stopped wiretapping mid way through the game because of that.
