It is a great game. It's so unfortunate that platformers have lost their appeal to the mass-market that they used to have with all of this "mature" crap. With the PSOne and the N64, and before, they enjoyed great success and were a substantial percentage of the market. I think I remember seeing a report some time ago, where they showed that the genre is selling only 1/4 as well as it did last generation.

So Halo, if it's lucky, may clear 4 to 4.5 million when all is said and done? Not bad considering the Xbox's weak userbase.
Unfortunately it'll also likelybe the only XBox franchise to pass 2 million, meanwhile GC sales seem to be more spread out among top sellers, with Mario, Mario Kart, Smash Bros & Zelda all guaranteed to pass the 2 million mark.

DJ Demon J said:
SMS's numbers should be very disturbing for Nintendo, and hopefully a big wake-up call (which I think they may have finally reacted to given Miyamoto's unveiling of Realistic Zelda).
What would Mario Sunshine's sales have to do with decisions on Zelda? Also, those SMS numbers should get a 600k+ boost from the bundle.

Good to see MK:DD doing very well (even though I think it's the worst MK yet)...imagine what online gameplay would have done to sales.
Safe to say, the effects would've most likely been negligible.

It's pretty amazing how well the Dreamcast stacks up to the other systems after 31 months even though the system was basically pulled out of production after only 18 months. If Sega hadn't been in such poor condition and running such a sloppy business the system likely would have been the 2nd most successful console of this generation. If you compare the first 18 months you'd probably see that the DC had a much higher attach ratio than any of the other consoles including the PS2, and that it outsold the GC and Xbox worldwide in that time frame. A company that could hold onto it's 3rd party developers could have ridden that success into the #2 slot this generation. The Dreamcast and the Genesis are the only reasons I can understand why Microsoft wants to be first next generation so badly.
DC was around 6 million worldwide when Sega pulled the plug. We took a look at the numbers on the last forum and in actuality, GC & XBox have consistantly outperformed DC in every region since launch (except XBox in Japan). It's very unlikely DC had a higher attatch ratio at any comparative point in it's lifecycle over the current consoles either, in fact Vic Irealnd blamed the low DC attatch ratio for not having Working Designs publish on the platform (Puyo Puyoon was rumored to be their first game).

Wow pretty good, how close is this to 100k sold?

Bunkum, can you post atari numbers?

8k-9k away. It's really close. It'll eclipse the original's sales (of 106k)

bunkum, could you post April's Sega and Nintendo numbers too? I might get to them today if possible.

EDIT: I just realized where that 15.4 million number came from that I posted on Page 2. It's the 9.4 million number from last year plus the 6 million MS hoped to sell. I guess whoever wrote the article got confused, or I read it wrong. It still could be 15.4 million shipped, but I don't know.

On Halo's sales, they're doing great. With Halo 2 coming out, and an upcoming price drop to $20, I'd imagine it could sell about 6 million worldwide, with 4.5 million of it being in the US.

Similarly, I think SSBM should do about 5.5-6 million worldwide or so by the end of the gen, with about 3.5 million of it being in the US.

Splinter Cell? Ninja Gaiden? I'm sure there will be a few more Xbox games crossing 2 million before the console is dead. Nice damage control though.

The point about SMS and realistic Zelda I was trying to make is that perhaps Nintendo has realized that the rest of us (read: non-Nintendo fanboys) want new shit, and not rehashed old shit (*cough* Classic NES series I'm looking directly at you). Hence, perhaps the new, mature take on Zelda (no, Celda does not count as it's kiddy) may mean that Nintendo is going to try and reinject their most beloved franchises with a little nitro. Or not. Regardless, a marquee, industry-making character like Mario selling less than 2 million in a year and a half is shocking. Not quite as quick a drop as Ms. Lara Croft, but still....

And bundle sales shouldn't count (nor should they count for Halo or any other bundle game) IMHO.

We probably won't get any of these numbers as they are American-traded companies. Not clear on the reasoning behind that, but I have yet to see EA or Activision numbers outside of Top Tens.

The ghost of Dreamcast past
Sales numbers for the Dreamcast before its discontinuation were similar to GameCube and Xbox, even without having EA support. In fact, with Dreamcast, SEGA captured as large a share of the mainstream sports market as EA had at the time - their premier NFL and NBA 2Kx franchises tracking around 1 million and 700,000+ respectively, and even the segments of World Series Baseball and Virtua Tennis charting several hundred thousand units each.

On average, the GC one is the cheapest selling ($16). The PS2 version is $22, and the Xbox version is $18. Still, the difference between the Xbox and GC version isn't so high for there to be such a difference. It may have to do with TS2 being the only good FPS (not counting MP) on the system. There are plenty more on the Xbox.

I wonder what LTD sales for all those are.

I think your trolling skills are a little off. You say that "no one" wants Nintendo's rehashed franchises yet last year 4 of the top 10 games sold in the US were Nintendo games and from usually named "rehashed" franchises. And take a guess what is the number 1 selling game so far this year (..hint it isn't Ninja Gaiden). That's right it's that game from one of the most "rehashed franchises" in recent years, Pokemon Colloseum. Lastly if no one wants Nintendo's rehashed games why is it that they are consistently the number 2 publisher in the US? The only company they trail is EA, which as far as sales go no video game company can touch right now.

You know the statement, "don't feed the trolls?" It means DON'T respond, and you won't have to deal with them again. He's not gonna just sit down and say, "Oh, you're right, Shory. What was I thinking?" He'll just find something else which he knows that will piss you off to argue because he enjoys it.

I'm suprised the GBA Videos didn't do so hot. We sold out of every one of them in my store except for Dora. Maybe its just because we're located in the same town as Majesco.

No, read again, I said "the rest of us (read: non-Nintendo fanboys)." Do I dispute that Nintendo is brilliant at forcing rehashed shit down kids and brainwashed fanboys' throats? Not at all--the rest of the industry could take lessons on how to squeeze every last profit out of the same brand/IP.

However, aside from Pokemon (and maybe even this is beginning to slow), the majority of their IP isn't selling as much as it used to....hence my comments that maybe Nintendo has begun to reinvent certain franchises (Metroid Prime is probably the best example--Nintendo could have done 3D side scroller but instead went FPS) in order to drive higher sales to reach heights they used to reach and perhaps sell consoles like they used to be able to...

They already have.

That's why we're getting Jak 3, Ratchet and Clank 3 and Sly Cooper 2 this year (all within two months of each other), and two Splinter Cell titles less than a year apart. Prince of Persia 2? This year as well.

I'm not saying these will be bad titles - far from it, I'm sure they'll be great.

But hot brands are powerful things and hard to pass up.

ahh the hypocrisy. Everyone disses Nintendo for their IPs/Sequels but then its an industry epidemic (BUT OH NO.. NINTENDO)

as for Metroid Prime.. wtf? Its not a FPS. And what?!?!? is a 3D side scroller? Crash Bandicoot? Go to hell.

is that lifetime sales. I'm guessing so because of the halo numbers. Some of the sales numbers are plain shocking.

a) we're never going to see Shenmue 3. Blinx outsold the epic. :O
b) rsc2.. :face shock:
c) pgr2 :face shock:
d) amped2 :face shock:

what does that say about the power of the xbox launch lineup. Their sales really nosedived on return. Can we get a listing for Nintendo?

No, read again, I said "the rest of us (read: non-Nintendo fanboys)." Do I dispute that Nintendo is brilliant at forcing rehashed shit down kids and brainwashed fanboys' throats? Not at all--the rest of the industry could take lessons on how to squeeze every last profit out of the same brand/IP.

I agree. Nintendo should just fill it's lineup with FPS after FPS.

Lara Croft, but still

I think your wrong about Mario. If they came out with a Mario game that was as good as the older series on the GC it would sell through the roof, and it wouldn't matter how "kiddy" you would find such a move. The simple fact is that outside this board, people don't talk about SMS as being one of their favorite GC games...because it doesn't stack up to the past. And even though that's true, it's still sold a ton because when you buy a cube your pretty much going to buy the Mario platformer on it unless you've already played it and realize the sequel was missing some of the magic.

I honestly don't think people dislike the GC because of the "kiddy" content. Their more than happy to have the classic Zelda and Mario characters appear however Nintendo deems fit as long as the magic is there. Arguably it hasn't been as much this gen, but that doesn't mean people won't be right back in there when it is. They are iconic! Their losing some of the older audience because of a lack of current content that is as mature as the other consoles and relatedly how their getting screwed (or screwing, I don't know) by the 3rd party release schedule. This also helps them post higher numbers for proprietary content than they would otherwise contra what some posters would have you believe.

The power of Link. Its sometimes hard to tell where the DC userbase went - JSRF, Shenmue both landed on the XBox but its the Gamecube SC that sells the best and SC was huge on the DC. Probably its biggest game

Let's hope the million gamers who purchased Prime likes it enough to make it another prime hit! As for Re4... looking at those numbers. Eh... ? I've changed my mind.. MP2E will whoops its retails ass.

I'm pretty sure Sonic Adventure was the DC's biggest game.

As for RE4, I don't think you can really base its sales on the previous ones. Survival horror games are fairly niche, while they do sell decently they don't sell nearly as well as they once did. RE4 basically looks like an all out action game now. If they advertise it like they've done with the trailers (rock music and constant action) it'll hammer it through to people that this isn't the same RE4 they've known. It could turn some off on it, and it could make alot more people interested in it.
