Pokemon Gold / Silver is nowhere to be seen, even though it sold 3,5M last year.
Pokewalker worked.

I added the database to the OP.

During the match 500k pre-orders were canceled due to boredom backlash. After the Penalty Shootout, the remaining pre-orders were canceled. Looks like the game is going to do 12k first week now. :(

Japan eliminated after participating in one (if not the) worst match of the WC. What does this mean for Inazuma? :lol

The game will still sell 1million+ copies, but Hino won't be gifted with a thousand nubile, barely legal virgins.

I'm not sure this matters, though, if one is interested in used sales to be able to determine how many "new sales didn't happen because of used copies". Like, if I buy DQ9 used, play it, trade it in, and you wander in off the street looking for DQ9 and choose a used copy over a new copy, it doesn't really matter if you choose my used copy, a used copy that's been through 10 trade cycles, or a used copy that was just traded for the first time ever; the net impact is the same.

Yes, that's a very good point. I was looking at it from the position of "how many percentage of the original owners who bought the game new eventually sold it back", because that's another interesting statistic in terms of seeing how well a game retains it's worth to a gamer.

I find it interesting how there are no Wii or 360 games at all in the top 25.

Tight battle this year.
Nintendo farts twice, starts marketing Mario Kart again and delays their games, Sony throws anything and everything they got on the market and still can't win. Imagine what would happen if Nintendo actually tried.

I think the germane question is "Why aren't Nintendo trying?" They started Wii out brilliantly, especially compared to the fumble-thumbed idiocy of the PS3 business plan. That Sony is now making a run of it is quite surprising. Nintendo is going to outsell Sony handily by year's end, and will make much more money, but it's fascinating trying to figure out their plan (if any).

Interesting for Wii, not so interesting for 360. The top selling 2009 game for it is at 200k.

There's no point trying to cultivate support for the Wii at this point. They should focus their efforts on the Wii2 and the 3DS.

The Wii's lack of a presence doesn't surprise me too much, especially considering the types of games that sell best for the system.

The've been following that advice in Japan for a while I'd reckon, which is why I think a Wii successor is closer than we think.

I agree. I think Nintendo has pretty much given up on the Wii. Not given up as in "they're dropping all support", but they'll just continue making games to satisfy the current audience, having given up on expanding it more with the Wii itself.

The situation of 3rd parties on the system just isn't good, limiting its potential for growth... And, at this point, it's too late to try to bring those titles and audiences due to a consolidated image. Although their first party titles sell very well, it didn't really become a healthy environment for development and that ended up hurting the system's sales too, not only the 3rd party games.

Another update for Inazuma Eleven in case anyone else wants to predict.

Inazuma Eleven 2 comgnet final preorders were 196.
With 2 more days to come Inazuma Eleven 3 preorders are 361.

EDIT: With 1 more day to come Inazuma Eleven 3 preorders are 377.
More or less it will double Inazuma Eleven 2 preorders.

I think it'll be the surprise announcement this year, like "WAT, Wii2 coming that soon?"
Especially since they didn't announce a new Wii Lite or even new colors or something at E3. They might just hold back a bit to give 3DS some room but they'll replace both DS and Wii before the end of 2011.

I'm tempted to agree. It's been obvious for ages that Wii is well past the point when any turnaround was going to happen, and I think Nintendo would be well-advised to do exactly what they appear to be doing - keeping the console chugging along a little longer with outsourced titles (Mario Sports Mix), collaborations (Metroid: Other M) and one or two big in-house games (Skyward Sword) while quietly directing their energies toward development for their next home console and garnering support from third parties.

Of course Nintendo having a significantly cheaper console and releasing nearly all of their biggest franchises while Sony hasn't yet, might have something to do with it. :)

Whoever 'wins' this year in console sales, the loser won't be too far behind.

As much as I really want to agree with this, I don't actually think that releasing a console that early particularly benefits Nintendo, especially if Microsoft and Sony just live out an extra year or so with the PS3 and 360 before they release their new consoles; a best-case scenario would be when Microsoft and Sony feel the need to release their own upgrades in response to the Wii2, and a mid-2012 release (at the earliest) would be much better suited for that, imo.

nah, it will only sell as much as Nintendo puts out. I don't know if Nintendo would be able to manufacture 2 million of those things at the end of the year. This is also why I think Nintendo is waiting till 2011 to release 3DS in the US. They know that whether they release it in November or March that it will sell out, so why not get a few more months to produce hardware, maybe get a few more software titles in the launch lineup, and sell out of 3DS in March?

Nintendo went years with the GC languishing...I doubt Nintendo cares about the Wii, when they have the 3DS to focus on. Wii 2 will come when the timing is right, similiar to how the DS paved the way to the Wii.

Releasing the Wii successor so close to 3DS seems like a bad move on Nintendo's part.

Nintendo will be fine on the console front. Japan isn't the only region, nor has it been the biggest.

That's not to say they shouldn't try to improve their Japanese sales, but what else do they have left? DQX? Redesign?

It looks like there's a new leak for famitsu 1st day sales, at least a few jp blogs spreading it, andriasang has it on his blog too. I guess we should post it here too, but take it with a grain of salt until its proven so we can trust it for upcoming leaks.

This is very true. I do however think they have peaked in N.A and the price drop/ new bundles aren't going to do all that much leading a steady fall in N.A sales. I don't see a NSMB Wii to lead to insane sales this holiday. Don't get me wrong- I'm sure it will continue to do fine and outsell the other systems, but I think we will see year to year declines from now on. Don't know enough to comment on PAL land.

Well, this is obviously too late, but they could have tried to make their 2010 lineup not suck so bad.

Bu bu but Donkey Kong Country Returns.
Believe.

Speaking seriously, it's clear that the Wii craze has peaked but still the system can enjoy good sales in western markets in coming months.

I thought the first Miku game sold around 175,000 copies LTD.

They have almost certainly peaked in N.A. But that is perfectly normal and expected. Iwata even mentioned it in some investor briefing some months ago. They know the Wii has peaked, and they are just trying to guide it to a soft and gradual landing instead of a crash landing.

The PS2 peaked in its 2nd year as well, by the way, so this is not atypical at all.

PS2: (using full calendar years)

Year 1 - 6.18M
Year 2 - 8.39M
Year 3 - 6.31M
Year 4 - 4.68M

Wii:

Year 1 - 6.29M
Year 2 - 10.17M
Year 3 - 9.59M
Year 4 - ???

The Wii actually held up much better in Year 3 than should have been expected (and starting from a higher plateau as well), so it should probably be due for a bigger fall in Year 4. (Somewhere around only 4.76M for year 4 would actually put the Wii at the same Year 1 to Year 4 transition as the PS2)

Anyway, it shouldn't be any sort of surprise (or concern) that the Wii has already peaked.

Its too bad we have to wait about 10 days for Famitsu 1st week numbers despite having a look at the top10 already, I can't wait for proper comparisons of those new games (famitsu vs famitsu, 1st week vs 1st week).

Was there ever a week where it was 360 > PS3 > Wii ? I seem to remember a certain period where every console was doing low numbers with the 360 doing exceptionally well, but did this situation actually ever occur?
