Thanks for answering my 3DS price questions.

I honestly don't think games in January is the solution for the WiiU. If I buy a WiiU, it'll be with NSMBU and Nintendoland, no matter when I buy it this year.

I'm honestly not sure what could help it right now. I really hope they're working on a great lineup to go up against Sony and Microsoft.

Oh you meant next week. I assumed you meant it would stay at 40k until the release schedule actually picked up which isn't looking like it will happen until March or April at the earliest

Oh no, I expect it to get much lower till the releases happen, but I think the curve will be a slower drop than it was for something like the Vita.

Someone please shop a Vita onto the head of the guy and put the other consoles on everyone else's faces

Its very interesting how things worked out, pretty much everyone thought Sony was nuts in not dropping the price with the new slim. Not only did it work out great for them but they now have a price drop card they can play at any time.

I don't know if I would call PS3's hardware sales this holiday great by any means. Nintendo's struggles being their own separate issue.

That first post.... What in the hell is the reason behind the Vita sales!? Did they drop the price or make a new bundle?

Hahaha, you just waited for this chance, didn't you?

Vita is still selling the least amount of the arguably "living" hardware, tough to interpret that as a positive news.

3DS beastly

Surprised at the Vita bump. I guess next week will tell us a lot more. Wii U didnt decrease too much but again next week will tell us a lot more.

The truly amazing thing about Vita's success is Geo had them used for 15,600 yen. That's almost 10,000 yen off the normal price. (3Gs were 16,600 yen, almost 50% off)

Who's buying all these new Vitas when there is a great used selection?

And next week we'll have to ask the same guy to make reversed gif.
I really hope Vita sells good, but we all know what to expect :(

Damn, 3DS, well done Vita. Dat first post.

What made the Vita sell so well this week anyway?

I'm surprised by how much you guys are flipping out over the Vita numbers.

Considering how horribly it was performing and the lack of any new colors and software it's pretty damn surprisin.

Let's hope it keeps it up.

3DS 3rd party sales are quite strong.

Seems like the 3DS could end up with the best 3rd party sales numbers for a Nintendo system. But SNES was really strong back then.

The Vita had an ok week selling 33k in one of the biggest sales week of the year. Don't throw yourself overboard of hype.

Wii U numbers will probably fall to less than 50k next week. Expect Nintendo in panic mode within a month.

2006 Week 1 (1-7):
Nintendo Wii - 195,331 | 96,332 | 195,331 | 1,114,974
PlayStation 3 - 69,944 | 71,727 | 69,944 | 527,502

2007 Week 1 (1-7):
Nintendo Wii - 195,331 | 96,332 | 195,331 | 1,114,974
PlayStation 3 - 69,944 | 71,727 | 69,944 | 527,502

2008 Week 1 (31-6):
WII - 207,797 | 152,209 | 207,797 | 4,823,957
PS3 - 64,183 | 52,706 | 64,183 | 1,705,859

2009 Week 1 (29-4):
WII | 119,965 | 134,958 | 2,982,727 | 7,598,866
PS3 | 60,654 | 45,989 | 1,041,406 | 2,683,082

2010 Week 1 (4-10):
| WII | 76.772 | 163.855 | 240.627 | 9.681.971 |
| PS3 | 61.591 | 114.368 | 175.959 | 4.562.958 |

2011 Week 1 (3-9)
PS3 | 59.612 | 76.422 | 61.591 | 59.612 | 61.591 | 6.147.102 |
| WII | 56.547 | 77.307 | 76.772 | 56.547 | 76.772 | 11.336.184

2012 Week 1 (2-8)
| PS3 | 74.459 | 67.199 | 59.612 | 74.459 | 59.612 | 7.710.844 |
| WII | 49.525 | 33.208 | 56.547 | 49.525 | 56.547 | 12.212.743 |

So basically. The WiiU is not the Wii. But its comparable to the PS3 for most of its life.
Why is it 'bad' according to some?

The PS3 just hasn't had a major decline in this week throughout its life. We already knew it wasn't the Wii and the Wii has already died. Am not sure how this is massively negative. Open to anything being pointed out.

[Numbers are complicated, the drop from after new year is obviously strong and overnight kind of deal so the day to day changes will affect those above, so keep dates in mind]

Well, considering that it's still coming off its launch, PS3's first Christmas period was universally considered bad and PS3 was much more expensive I'd say ... not so good?

Its that launch then that really low bit week in week out. Stronger Launch for WiiU (much stronger); so its now more about how it sells week in week out outside the Holiday.
Basically were still in territory that we just don't know what will go on.

Its a 6 year old console with a large install base. You cant expect anything more out of the PS3.

I guess it is because everyone expected WiiU to destroy the PS3 as soon as it launches forcing Sony to lower price. That does not seem to be happening anytime soon.

3DS with great HW sales again this week and the software just keeps on chugging. Paper mario might go close to the 500K mark next week. It's going to be interesting to see what sort of numbers the 3DS, vita and wii U settle on in the coming months.

When was the last time it was ever that high?

Why does that matter? It sold 20k last week and was bound to sell more this week. Had I made a prediction I would have said it would probably do between 25k and 27k this week. Now it's a little higher than that, but hardly crushing any expectations I would have reasonably made.

People around here have grown accustomed to Vita's 5-15k performance, so this is a nice change of pace I guess :p

Anyway, as expected with Wii U (I expected around 60k) I'm pretty curious where it will end up. Vita type of lows could happen, but that's not very likely is it? NSMB U and Nintendoland perform well enough. I do wonder when the next Direct will pop up...

Hmm anyone have weeks 1-8 of 3DS sales to compare with Wii U?

Could be interesting to compare how holidays upward trend is working against typical post launch drop.

So week 1 is just generally a larger shopping week than week 52 in Japan? That explains it. Also explains the less-than-expected Wii U drop.

Yeah, I was happy to see the Vita sales till I realized that. Next week it'll probably be back down to ~10k, maybe 15k if they're lucky.

February-March will make or break Vita in Japan.

If releases like PSO2, Soul Sacrifice, Tales of Hearts R and One Piece: Kaizoku Musou 2 don't move some units, and cannot manage to stretch sales until Golden Week at the start of May, we'll have a bleak year ahead of us.

FFX HD might move some units though...

They seemed to have sold quite well without cutting price worldwide as well. I think the price cut will finally come after E3.
