Media Create Sales: Week 2, 2016 (Jan 11 - Jan 17)

Nope, only download cards, and I'm sure there wasn't any for that game.

the only thing might be that M-C didn't track the limited edition, which was sold exclusively on 3 shops

actually i don't have any other idea about such a huge difference

persona 5 will show much bigger growth worldwide than it will in japan imo. 350k fw in japan does seem low tho. i would go with 425-450k

Persona 4 "only" sold 300k on PS2, and Persona 4 Golden hasn't crossed the 350k threshold yet after having incredible legs for years.

Only a small thing, but it's almost definitely passed 350k with digital and I think it's likely it passed it at retail too. The original SKU was at 329,050 at the end of 2014. The budget re-release sold 3,574 FW at the beginning of 2015, which is a pretty high FW for a budget re-release on Vita. I'd imagine once we get Media Create white paper for 2015 it'll be at > 350k with all SKU's combined.

Not that that makes a massive difference to your point, but still :p

Well I think you overestimate it.

Sure there's growth, but no one really knows how much exactly and I don't think pointing to 100-250k selling spin-off, a 25k/volume TV series (and a second one not exactly as hot) is a metric good enough to think that Persona 5 will sell 800k rather than 500k LTD.
Persona 5 will also be on two systems at launch.

My reasons for anticipating massive growth....

-Golden is an enhanced port of P4 that sold more than the original despite being on a lower install base. That's not common at all with re-releases. Once again, a new port sold more than the original!

-25k per volume is actually very good for an anime. Enough so that it warranted yet another adaption. Anime's have in the past propelled video game sales, such as Yokai Watch.

-Persona 5 is tracking higher than FFXV in Famitu's most anticipated poll. Not the greatest metric to guesstimate sales, but that is still a very strong message of how popular the brand is now.

-Outside of previous sales analysis, the Persona series has had very continuous and positive word of mouth. Many will be interested who haven't previously played a Persona game. All the spinoffs have given the series decent exposure to new audiences.

I think the thirst is very much real for P5 and a great RPG, across both PS3 and PS4.

I just want Star Ocean 5 to be successful enough for tri-Ace/Square-Enix to work together again.

*cough* VP3 *cough*

I second this. Great opening week for Odin's Sphere remake as well. Hopefully the western release will be just as good if not better. Good for Atlus and Vanillaware.

01./00. [PSV] Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir <RPG> (Atlus) {2016.01.14} (¥7.980) - 43.394 / NEW

A few weeks into the new year, and the top-selling game of the week is already under 50K. Wow.

Edit:
I guess it's not super unusual, then. Last year was Youkai Watch 2: Shinuchi at just over 50K. < 50K for #1 has happened in January in 2012 (MK7), 2009 (Play on Wii: Mario Tennis GC and Dissidia: Final Fantasy), 2004 (GT4:prologue), and 2002 (GT Concept: 2001 Tokyo). It just doesn't happen a lot.

The budget re-release

Oh yes forgot that one, it did show up a few times in MC weekly top 50 even.

Persona 5 will also be on two systems at launch.

Well yes like every major 3rd party japanese release for the past few years, but considering almost every PS4 owner was most likely a PS3 owner beforehand I don't think it really matters.

Multiplatform is a benefit if it grows the overall audience you're trying to reach, here it's more because a notable part of the PS3 audience hasn't migrated to PS4 yet.

Like a PS4/3DS release would have changed a lot regarding sales prediction, even PS4/PSV would have impacted it in some way, but PS3/PS4? Not really

For a enhanced port to outsold the original game mean the serie is growing

Not saying the opposite, I mean my own prediction is 100% growth since P4.

25K is more than very good, it's amongst the top 5 TV anime sellers for a year, but did it reach a new audience? I don't think it did or at least not that much, also your Yokai Watch comparison is moot since Persona 4 was your typical late night anime, you don't "grow" the audience of an IP like Persona by airing something past midnight on cable tv channels.

10 years ago Persona 3 was already in the top 3 spots of most wanted famitsu on a regular basis, sometimes above MGS4 and Resident Evil 5, still remember it as a nice joke since no one really knew the series back then. (and the game ended up selling 200k)
Also the FF series is on a decline overall and probably isn't as appealing as it was before to the core audience voting in these famitsu polls, but yeah these polls are a bad metric for the overall market anyway.

On that point I agree, but I don't think that's enough to make Persona goes from 300k to 900k :)

I thought big JRPGs usually don't have legs to double their first week. Like doesn't FF get huge drops?

480k fw, 700 ltd.

Usually yes, but when the audience of an IP is growing past the release of the game and/or when the game releases early on a console life cycle and/or it has good word of mouth it can have legs.

Persona 4 Golden fit all 3 criteria and had a 150k FW and is around 350k LTD

I don't think that Persona 5 will double its FW sales, but it shouldn't be as frontloaded as a FF/Tales of title.

Amazing Odin Sphere sales!

Quite reaching to compare the third parties situation on Wii U and a game in a popular IP in the monster-catching genre on 3DS. Publishers also make bad decisions all the time.
I didnt really compare anything, so it wasnt any reaching. I was just commenting on what you said about that you didnt hope publishers greenlit games on Vita just to give Vita some games too. If they did this, then they would do it for the WiiU as well, concidering how low 3rd party support it has. Yes, publishers makes bad decisions sometimes indeed, but not on purpose, and they're not "giving" games to lower supported platform games just to be kind.

Indeed - they greenlited games on PSV because they thought it would have been financially worthwile, not because "just give PSV some games". That's what I wrote.

I see what you mean now. When you wrote " I do hope publishers are not greenliting PSV games because "let the PS Vita have some games".", i was taking that more litterally, saying that they arent doing that.

So are PSTV sales no longer tracked, or are they lumped into PSV sales? Yes they were only a 500-600 usually, but sales are sales. Weird to stop tracking when we have numbers like 99 from X1.

Good for Atlus/Sega. Good news for them is always good.

Has there ever been a week where a device was tracked in the single digits?

200k first week ? totally unreasonable

01./00. [PS3] Yakuza 0 <ADV> (Sega) {2015.03.12} (¥8.845) - 145.823 / NEW
02./00. [PS4] Yakuza 0 <ADV> (Sega) {2015.03.12} (¥8.845) - 90.506 / NEW

Given that this is technically the 3rd rerelease of this game (Yakuza 1, Yakuza 1 HD, Yakuza Kiwami) I think expecting an even bigger drop than 0 is reasonable.

Of course, you may also get the reverse as this is a great entry point for people interested in the series.

6 needs to refresh the series even more than 5 did, franchise fatigue warning signs popping up.

Looking at how thin the upcoming Wii U release list looks, i wonder if Nintendo is contemplating Pikmin 4 for a potential crossplatform release between Wii U and NX.

i would say the prospects look even worse in Japan than in America and Europe, in part because two of the future releases are Zelda games. And Zelda as a franchise performs better in the other parts.

This is taking into consideration Miyamoto's comments about the project been very far along and things like that.

Haha, rash I know, but my gut feeling still tells me that P5 will see massive growth. Perhaps 900k peak is a bit mad, but 700-800k LTD... BELIEVE!

The release schedule looks about the same level as every year.

Or you just talking about ~Aug-onwards, which we don't fully know about?

Xbox One does OG Xbox seem a success in Japan.

The market for home consoles isn't in good shape but c'mon... this is a huge disaster.

Odin Sphere doing pretty good. Nice to see

The sheer legs titles. Still going.
Splatoon on top even without new bundles. Guess the slower Wii-U sales impacted SMM harder. Splatoon might make it above Monster hunter as things slow down.

Went and checked that page, and it looks like Nintendo has fully discontinued the Nintendo 3DS XL.

It's not new (but got no idea when it was updated), but still interesting to see it sell so "much". Retailers must have a lot left in stock.

Will this be the lowest selling Mario RPG....period (worldwide)? edit: maybe japan too, but I don't the numbers at my fingertips.

According to Celine's thread, Paper Mario 64 is last at 1.37m

XB1 is the only active console from Microsoft in Japan and since Microsoft is subscriber at Media Create, like Xbox, they'll keep tracking it even when it falls at single digit sales.
