Games with fee to play bypass ps+, it is not allowed to charge the two things at the same time for a game.

If that's true, why would anyone settle for a single game subscription when they can just get PS+ and have unlimited online access to every game on PS? How would Capcom make any money off their own subscription services if it indeed exists?

Because the only games with a fee to play are big MMOs like FFXIV or DQX and people that like to play those games understand that they won't get the amount and quality of content required to run those services without a monthly fee to sustain the development.

MH Frontier has a fee if I remember right, that's one of the reasons why it's a game nobody cares about and never will.

MHW won't have that business model

This may seem way to far away but how much of a chance will Mario O and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 open ahead of their Wii U predecessors and by how much?
I'm thinking 220k Mario
115k Xenoblade Chronicles 2

I think you're low balling Mario. Between now and the release of Mario the user base of the switch is set to explode and I think Mario will be a beneficiary of that. Xenoblade I'm not sure about. Did the last one have a good reception in Japan? Will Nintendo give it a big push? Does it risk getting lost in the storm of Nintendos big hitter this holidays. I don't see it getting the same big boost that Mario will.

Amazon pre-announced they were selling Switch + Arms bundles that went on sale at 10pm JP time last night. The order page went down 2 minutes prior to commence time due to high traffic, and errors lasted for over an hour. When the website came back online it was already sold out.

Seen lots of reports of twitter this morning of people walking in to retail stores and being able to buy Switch's. Hopefully this bodes well for Switch stock for this week.

Hopefully we see at least 50K+ this week. We're about a month away from splatoon 2 releasing so I can only see demand going up on the coming weeks. Hopefullly the stock issue has improved significantly by then.

So what current online model closely resembles what MHW could potentially assume? GTAO? MK8?

01./00. [3DS] Super Mario 3D Land <ACT> (Nintendo) {2011.11.03} (¥4.800) - 343.492 / NEW

Odyssey will beat 3D Land. Xenoblade who knows. That doesn't seem unreasonable.

[Wii U] Super Mario 3D World (Nintendo, 11/21/13) – 99,588 (New)

Super Mario Odyssey should easily triple those numbers. Maybe even quadruple, depending on what the stock situation is looking like in October. In the end, Odyssey could very well become a million seller like SM64 and the Galaxy games.

As for Xenoblade 2, XCX opened with roughly 86k on the Wii U. I can definitely see XC2 opening above 100k (maybe even 150k), considering it's on much more popular hardware and it will be a holiday title this time.

Here is what I predict for the two changing them due to some more added context.
365k Mario
135k XC2
Also think we will see for other titles....
120k Fire Emblem Warriors
70k Rabbids and Mario
850k Splatoon 2
345k MHXX
525k DQ11

I usually only go to shops on Sunday or Monday (I work Saturdays). So I have never even once seen a Switch on store shelves. Only the "Sold out" signs.

I was here during the Wii days and even then it wasn't this bad. I still saw them from time to time. The only thing I saw like this was the DS lite. And even then I was able to get one in the first month without a pre-order.

I might hit some stores tonight to see how the launch of ARMS is in my town.

But seriously Nintendo is squandering their opportunity with Switch. It's the hot item right now. And people can't get it. So new games like ARMS are not getting the fair shot they deserve due to people not having the necessary hardware.

My students tell me they are excited for Splatoon 2 but they fear they won't get to play it since their moms or dads can't get a Switch. "They are very rare". Even 8 year olds know there are supply constraints. Madness.

Get it together Nintendo.

And before people come in with, "All part of Nintendo's Master Plan to increase demand". That would be a stupid and expensive plan right now. They have people lining up not for the Switch but for a chance to win the opportunity to buy one. You don't need to keep feeding the demand, it's there, you need to get units out before you piss off the customers so much they don't bother. [For example I would have bought an NES classic if they were ever available online. They never were, so I gave up, now I don't even want one] Nintendo needs to strike while the iron is hot.

The only thing that is going to hold back sales of Splatoon 2 is Nintendo's moronic planning.

I know there is no magic "Make more Switches" button. And I know the Wii U was a failure so they are shell shocked. But if they assumed that the Switch was going to sell only a little more than the WiiU (which is the limit they have imposed due to supply) then why did they even bother releasing it?

The only exclusive New 3DS games are now:

Xenoblade Chronicles 3D
Fire Emblem Warriors

Don't forget Runbow Pocket. And a few download only games like Binding of Isaac Rebirth, forma.8 and Wind Up Knight 2.

I think they expected it to sell significantly more than the Wii U, just not so much out of the gate. They probably thought it would have a humble opening and gain a lot of traction over time, rather than selling as it has right from the start.

That being said, there's no reason they should've expected this low of sales. Especially in Japan.

Because what else were they going to do? Get out of the hardware business entirely? We know that wasn't going to happen. No one knew this thing was gonna be as big is it is now. People were spelling doom for the thing after the January event, too. We should be happy that this has become something people actually want to use instead of how it was with the Wii U. You're right, they need to get more systems out there, but this can't magically happen.

The biggest bomb drop was Pokémon(probably 2018?).

Nintendo did the absolute no brainer thing and made the convergence clear. Considering Takahashi's comment on his relief I imagine they were reluctant to do it. It needed to be done considering the lack of third party support though.
It also stuck out to me that they announced Metroid Prime 4 with a logo to help make sure the 3DS game didn't upset people.
You give to much credit to internet reactions.
https://www.polygon.com/2017/6/15/15813568/nintendo-metroid-prime-4-switch-e3-2017

“We wanted to make it clear that Metroid is an important franchise for us,” Fils-Aime told Polygon, “As we think about how to satisfy the needs to the Metroid fans, we needed to make sure they understood there was a great console experience coming, in addition to Metroid: Samus Returns coming on Nintendo 3DS.

“That's what we wanted to make sure it was clear that it wasn't one or the other, that we were going to support both of our platforms with a great new Metroid experience.”

Standard multiplayer like any other game with paid DLC, be it cosmetics and/or new content. They could try to add microtransactions too but I don't think MH could make them work that easily, but never say never.

The only reason the old ps2 games had a fee is because online was not standarised into the console business, there was no such thing as psn or xbox live so every game with online had to provide the whole infrastructure to make it work and also there was the 'novelty' factor to make hardcore fans pay for something that wasn't possible a few years prior.

Isn't the entire Snes VC library is exclusive to the N3ds

I agree there is not so much they can do at this point but it still feels like really poor planning. I mean they had a media blitz. Impressions were very good. Pre-orders sold out (they should have started pre-orders earlier and not cut them off so quickly). And they had their first ever Super Bowl ad. They clearly had big expectations for this thing but not the hardware to back those up.

But yeah I know hindsight is 20/20. It's easy to say now.

Just a shame though. They really knee-capped themselves.

Given the current demands on limited tech, I don't think there's much to be done here regardless of how confident or not Nintendo could or would have been in a different time, because this currently an industry wide shortage that is hitting everyone across the planet.

But even that said, I do think ggx2ac's analysis has generally been on point and right now we're seeing stockpiling + slowly increasing volume production, but we won't see the real fruits of this until come Splatoon. We should see a pretty big up-tick on ARMS, though.

Santy Shop was plenty of ARMS copies. There was a lot of people interested in the game outside the store, and Switch is still available at 1:00pm.

Are we really expecting 50k+ this week?

I'm slightly pessimistic on that.

We'll just have to wait and see.

I'm still waiting on NPD numbers for May just to get it out of the way because of expecting similar numbers to April of around 280k.

Annoyingly have to wait until next week for that since it couldn't happen today because of E3.

I'm slightly pessimistic on that.

Well, tomorrow we have new lotteries at the Bic Camera Group stores (Bic Camera, Sofmap and Kojima). Seeing how available is today Switch (that still is), tomorrow should be a slightly bigger number, even with lotteries. However, I also can't see more than 50k. ARMS is not Mario Kart and it's not an excuse enough for Nintendo to ship more units.

DQXI just seems to have been a cluster fuck of planning. Why did it start as a PS4 title only to pivot hard towards 3DS near the end of life of the latter. Like what was the planning here? Why not make it for 3DS first in it's prime and then later release an HD release of PS4?

They spent years making the PS4 version while the 3DS was riding high and *then* pivoted but by then time had done as it always does and started taking it's toll on the 3DS.
I have a feeling the 3DS version has been basically done for awhile now but they wanted a PS4 version to release at the same time. It's also a bit weird that DQXI was the first confirmed Switch game and there's nothing on it right now despite being reconfirmed.
It seems like the games are so different that they might as well have been doing DQXI and XII to release soon after.

2016 for 3DS DQXI and 2018 for PS4 and Switch DQXII likely would've made more sense in hindsight.

Any link to check the situation? Today I can't check it by myself.

There's nothing coming November/December (yet) for Switch from Nintendo so Xeno 2 doesn't have much competition really.

Makes sense. The PS2 games had a subscription fee IIRC.

Wii did too. It would surprise me if World didn't have it. Servers cost money and World will sell a lot less than the PSP and 3DS games did. You can still be more profitable with lower sales if you get your customers to pay a subscription fee. That very likely is part of the decision to put the game on PS4.

Xbox Live launched before Monster Hunter did. Capcom's other online PS2 and Wii games didn't carry a fee either so your rationalization here doesn't really hold water.

I don't think World will have a online subscription because I think that would just piss off people after the 3DS games didn't have them. But I think they'll charge for DLC and have a season pass.

Why's that a reason to put it on the PS4 specifically? Several Nintendo platforms supported subscriptions for DQX too, right?

The point of my post wasn't to explain why it is on PS4 and not another platform. I made a comment on the likelihood of a sub fee, based on previous games. Sub fee as extra income to offset lower sales could be one of several reasons that lead to bringing it to PS4. I'm not saying that is the only reason, I said "part of the decision".

Gamesmaya store opened at 10:00 today for Arms, so maybe it's not only big stores and cities that got bigger Switch shipments.

Famitsu has Switch at 940k. If supply is so big that it can top 1m this week there will likely be an early report, but something close to 50k is my guess.

Speaking of ARMS, I am just now checking the Switch sales ranking and ARMS knocked Minecraft off the #1 spot. In less than a day. Wow.

Switch has arms in week 16 and splatoon 2 in week 20.

The switch is about to blow past the 3DS if they can sort out the stock issues. Not sure if it'll be able to keep up over the holidays, Nintendo would have to drastically increase stock levels.

After 15 weeks at retail
Switch software - 1.526.000 (1,60 attach rate)
Wii U software - 1.189.000 (1,45 attach rate)

That'll be interesting to look at again by the end of the year. The gap will widen massively post splatoon 2.

There's nothing coming November/December (yet) for Switch from Nintendo so Xeno 2 doesn't have much competition really.

There are a lot of big games coming this year which will still be selling in the holidays though.

Is that a weekly ranking? Still a pretty good sign.
