On the topic of Mario spin-offs selling more than 3M... We have the following:

Dr. Mario on NES with 4.85M (also on Gameboy).
Mario Kart series.
Super Paper Mario on Wii with 4.23M.
Mario Party 9 on Wii with 3.11M.
Mario Party DS with 9.31M (wtf).
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story on DS with 4.56M.
Super Mario Maker on Wii U with 3.95M.

It's not a really big list and only 2 "RPG" oriented titles made it. I wouldn't be confident on Rabbids reaching that milestone.

(Maybe I missed some?)

Several of the Mario and sonics.
And I would guess a few Mario sports games...

1986 [NES] Metroid - 2,73m
1991 [GMB] Metroid II: Return of Samus - 1,72m
1994 [SNES] Super Metroid - 1,42m
2002 [GCN] Metroid Prime - 2,84m
2002 [GBA] Metroid Fusion - 1,60m
2004 [GCN] Metroid Prime 2: Echoes - 1,12m
2004 [GBA] Metroid: Zero Mission
2005 [NDS] Metroid Prime: Pinball
2006 [NDS] Metroid Prime: Hunters - 1,08m
2007 [GCN] Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - 1,41m
2010 [WII] Metroid: Other M
2016 [3DS] Metroid Prime: Federation Force
2016 [3DS] Metroid Prime: Blast Ball
2017 [3DS] Metroid: Samus Returns
201x [NSW] Metroid Prime 4

Metroid hasn't hit the million mark since Prime 3 and likely won't do it before Prime 4.

Mario sports are on the thread and all seem to be below 3M. Mario and Sonic is missing from the list though, guess because published by Sega or something.

It went like this:

Published by Sega in NA and EU, by Nintendo in JP:
Beijing
Vancouver
London

Published by Nintendo worldwide:
Sochi
Rio

Meanwhile, it looks like Pyeongchang 2018 won't get a Mario & Sonic sports game...
Steep has an Olympics license, and since the event takes place in February, we would've usually had a game announced by now.

Edit:
funny how the soft launch wound up being not so soft a launch, even though nintendo themselves seemed pretty prepared for a light reaction.

2018 is going to start getting crowded on the machine. there's a good (relatively niche?) 5-6 japanese games that should be revealed before the end of february that i think will really hit the mark with the right people. i really can't wait for this thing to really take off.
As for this, NIS could by itself supply half of these 5-6 PS4 games that are yet to be released in the west haha. I mean, there's The Witch and the Hundred Knight 2 (although already announced; I'd rather have 1+2 on Switch too - that would even count as 2), Coven and the Labyrinth of Refrain, Hakoniwa Company Works, and potentially Yomawari 1+2 (I guess those don't count, as they'll release next week).

Not just announced, it would already have a release date and tons of details, since it'd have been released in November.

Next game won't be before 2019 then, as there's no way they're going to pass on the Tokyo Olympics (and SEGA do have the licence for this one). Hopefully they come up with something more ambitious than usual, gotta take advantage of the inevitable Olympics craze in Japan.

Speaking of Olympics, still amused by all the free publicity Nintendo got thanks to Abe's shenanigans.

Never realized that Prime was the best selling Metroid...but the drop to 2 was harsh.

[3DS] FE Awakening - 1,79m
[GBA] FF Tactics (outside Japan) - 1,18m (441.926 famitsu)

I feel Metroid Samus Returns has a chance to become a million seller (worldwide), it needs to have good legs through the holiday though (in America and Europe).

I have serious doubts Samus Returns will have the legs or LTD of Zero Mission in USA, not at this phase of 3DS life.

Awakenings' number is from Dec 2014 and Fates number was prior to the European launch (counts for a month and a bit in the US), so I'm sure they'll be past the 2 million mark each.

As for Metroid, being released late during the 3DS life, I'm guessing it's more likely to get around 500,000 to 750,000 than a million.

Can you explain why you feel it can reach this number?

This isn't meant to be snarky. I am genuinely curious.

Hm, I guess there's a lot of reasons. Mainly the reveal and timing.

- Reveal. Even despite the leak (and in some ways it made the reveal more noteworthy), I think the reveal was nailed. Definitely a better reveal than most mario rpgs get nowadays. It seemed to have a good amount of promotion too.
- Reception/Reviews
- Timing. Releasing Switch year one with a good amount of space between Splatoon and Mario Odyssey.
- With TTYD doing almost 2 million on the poor GC, and several Mario RPGs doing way better on other systems, I figured beating TTYD wouldn't be a difficult task. The points it loses for being a SRPG instead of a JRPG lare made up for by the other stuff.
- Graphical style. I'm not saying the paper style took sales away from PM games, but this game looks like a regular "HD Mario" which may influence a more casual consumer.

In my mind I was comparing it to other mario rpgs, with the pros and cons, and extrapolating from that.

I think Mario and Rabbids will sell well enough to eventually reach 2M, not sure about 3.

I think the developer was talking about that he'd be pretty happy if it reached 2M so I imagine the budget wasn't too big

SnK on the other hand i would love to see come to Switch. Give me Days of Memories 4.^_^ Give us more Kula and Leona goodness.
I think there’s a really good opportunity for SNK on supporting Switch. Hamster even already building their audience for them.

Why would it be a Metal Max game? Why is that series even still alive? And why would its next installment be on PS4/Vita? :p
It’s still alive, there was a mobile game a year or so back, although the main series has been only on Nintendo platforms while the sister Metal Saga series has been on both Nintendo and PlayStation.

Metal Max (FC) 1991
Metal Max 2 (SFC) 1993
Metal Max Returns (SFC) 1995
Metal Max 2 Kai (GBA) 2003
Metal Max 3 (DS) 2009
Metal Max 2 Reloaded (DS) 2011
Metal Max 4: Moonlight Diva (3DS) 2013

Metal Saga: Chain of Sandstorm (PS2) 2005
Metal Saga: Season of Steel (DS) 2006

A restock just happened on amazon: SKUs for Switch at number 4, 5, 9, 10, 20, 28 (Splatoon 2 bundle), 39, 41, 44, 78, 88, and 93 (SMO bundle). Number 10 and 20 bundled a copy of BOTW with it, so we may see a small rise for BOTW in the next report.
