Media Create Sales: Week 44, 2012 (Oct 29 - Nov 04)

3DS will sell more this holiday season than last year, there is a way broader library and there are probably enough customers which still want to upgrade to the XL.

I doubt the new titles will have the impact of the Holy Trinity, even though I expect Animal Crossing and Mystery Dungeon to breach 1 mil each.

Do people really think even if FF7r was exclusively announced for Vita it would change anything? With how the FF brand is perceived right now in Japan? Plus by the time it came out it would be too late

They've already announced FFX HD (and never spoke of it again) for it and that didn't do shit.

Vita needed a better price, no exclusive memory cards, at least 4 hardware selling exclusives and a bit more marketing.

but that ship sailed

it's dead.

Here's the scary thought: What if the people that did buy the system bought it because of FFX? As in, the numbers we've seen so far are part of an actual FFX bump.

I think many people bought in the hope that a bunch of games would eventually be announced and it sold on the goodwill of the PSP and a few games like Persona 4. Now that the truth is out and the support looks abysmal for next year, sales sunk to actual interest in the system based off the current game lineup. The scary thing is Vita can (and will) go much lower than this after the meager holiday boost it gets runs dry in January. We could be looking at it selling right along the Wii and 360.

So you are so focused on shutting down any remote possible chance for Vita to do a turning point (as if our talk here could have some relevance...) that you didn't notice that I stated that up to now there is no real and reliable and concrete reason to think about a possible real relaunch of Vita.

I'm focusing on the fact that you wrote that historically Sony was able "to convince third parties in developing for its hws", and that's not true, at least to a certain degree.

No, its dead. No way it comes back from this. No hardware comes back from this.

Mystery Dungeon 1 mil!?

How much did the previous ones sell, I didn't think they were that big.

When the two SKUs of previous rounds of Mystery Dungeon games were combined, both sets passed 1 million easily. Hell, even the remake put up a few hundred thousand. Mystery Dungeon is easily the most popular Poke-spinoff.

Vita's worst week for Famitsu as well.

Media Create
1. 4,842 (Oct 29, 2012)
2. 5,806 (Oct 22, 2012)
3. 6,134 (Oct 08, 2012)

Famitsu
1. 5.368 (Oct 29, 2012)
2. 5,849 (May 07, 2012)
3. 5,879 (May 14, 2012)

One more decline next week, and then COLORS on Nov 15!

Could it actually get into the 3k range? Honestly, I've thought Vita didn't have much of a chance for a while now, but I never expected sales to drop this low. I expected 8k-10k as a minor amount of PSP buyers switched over and bought Vitas, but instead it's just gotten massively worse.

I think people who put stock in a FFVIIr are misguided, even more when 3DS has DQ VIIr coming and DQ fucking crushes FF.

However VII and it's characters have held very strongly even after all the damage of the Fabula Nova Crystallis and FF XIV, so trying to judge how a FFVIIr would perform based on that is equally misguided in my mind.

If we're going to compare the console race to a marathon, Vita's that guy that went way the fuck over-pace at the start so he can keep up with the world-class runners for the first mile, and walks the rest of the race because he doesn't have anything left in the tank.

Isn't the White Vita out in Japan already? That didn't do anything iirc.

Well it was bundled with Miku. I don't remember if they ever sold it standalone? That bundle definitely sold reasonably well.

EDIT: never mind, I guess they did

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but wasn't there a rumour a while ago about a title or titles for Vita being either cancelled or moved to PSP/3DS? I seem to think it might have been the reason behind the first lackluster Vita Heaven and the non existent second one...

They've already announced FFX HD (and never spoke of it again) for it and that didn't do shit.

Seriously. What the bloody hell's happened to FFX HD?

Likely got put on hold while the team went to work on ARR.

Well, you gotta hand it to Sony: they are standing by the Vita, come hell or high water.

Total opposite of Nintendo and the Virtual Boy.

Seems more like they're too preoccupied with barely knowing it exists to stand by it :p

at this rate, the 3ds will reach 8m before the vita reaches 1m, and the 3ds xl will reach 1m before the vita reaches 1m

we'll see how it does in the states with the bundles, but historically speaking, and i mean looking back at systems with similar sales at this time, it's dead. this is dreamcast level right here. and it might be sad if sony actually gave a damn.

Maybe Sony should put down Vita just like Nintendo put down Virtual Boy then.

Acknowledge your failure then move on.

Well, PS3 sales fell to ~1k or ~2k the week just before the Slim model and price cut. Ignoring weeks before other price cuts, the PS3 has never normally gone below ~7k.

There is also the bit where the PS3 actually had a strong level of third-party support before it even launched.

The fact is the Vita has no recent comparison; even the Dreamcast arguably had more high profile Japanese titles announced for it. So trying to look to the PS3 or PSP or whatever to make a case for why a turnaround is still possible is pointless.

In hindsight, Microsoft killing off the original Xbox was the best decision they have made to date.

I know the context is different, but with every end there is a beginning.

3DS December 2012>3DS December 2011 possibilitty must be somewhere between 0% and 1%

Do you have 3DS hardware numbers for Dec '11?
Are you so sure of that because the holy trinity was way more "heavy" in terms of rough start-up sales compared to the actual December lineup?

I doubt the new titles will have the impact of the Holy Trinity, even though I expect Animal Crossing and Mystery Dungeon to breach 1 mil each.

I agree also with this.

Actually, I don't think we were expecting lines.
This is a first for Animal Crossing!

well, honestly I'm surprised too, because we are talking about a game usually absolutely not front-loaded.

I'm focusing on the fact that you wrote that historically Sony was able "to convince third parties in developing for its hws", and that's not true, at least to a certain degree.

Everyone has an opinion. I respect yours.
Mine is that if there is a firm fact in the past VG industry is exactly Sony's strenght in third party relationships.
Note: past, not actual related to Vita (that's exactly what I was saying: up to now there is no concrete evidence of possible relaunch for Vita especially because of the absolut lack of firm announcments)
