Mega Man 2 & 3 - Rocking On with Rush and Blues

The next two games in the Mega Man Retrospective are some of the most important games in the Mega Man series. They continued refining the very strong base Mega Man 1 created and it was a labor of love by the developers.

These two games are both fantastic and they were a treat revisit again.

Mega Man's 2 development was very rocky, with the game more or less being a side project for the Mega Man 1 staff. The original Mega Man wasn't the hit Capcom was expecting, so they pushed for the team to make other, more profitable games instead.

This lead to Mega Man 2 being a passion project by the staff of Mega Man 1 while they were working on various other games. What were some of those games? Why of course, the NES Classics Ducktails, Ducktails 2 and Chip N' Dale Rescue Rangers.

Mega Man 2 finally released and it was a massive success. EVERYONE loved the game and got universal praise. So, Capcom gave the team a bigger budget for the sequel, Mega Man 3, but the team got a lot of new hires. This lead to it being one of the hardest games for the team to produce, as they had to rush the game for the holidays, staff having issue understanding how to make a Mega Man game and the game not being optimized enough.

It released and it got great reception, leading to Mega Man becoming a pillar franchise for Capcom. And it lead to three more sequels being commissioned for the NES for the next few years.

While both games share the same Retrospective, they will have three sections:
-Mega Man 2 Level Design and Fights
-Mega Man 3 Level Design and Fights
-Wily Castle Stages and Bosses

They share the core gameplay systems but the differences in level design needs to be pointed out.

Mega Man 2 being an extension of the original Mega Man, level design that teaches you how to play. Types of level gimmicks that are common in Mega Man 2 include vanishing blocks and normally two different paths you can take.

Mega Man 1 had that too, but it happens more so here. What makes this games level design so memorable is how tight it is. Stages like Air Man, Metal Man and Bubble Man are hard & challenging but still quite rewarding. I particularly like the water gimmick Bubble Man offers, with Rock having higher jumps when jumping underwater.

Mega Man 2's lineup of weapons is fantastic, with the Metal Blade being the best weapon in the game. High amount of ammo alongside very powerful damage output. You can even use it on most of the Robot Masters too. The Robot Master fights in MM2 are harder then MM1's and have more strict patterns to take note of. Overall, MM2 core level design, robot master fights, and weapon powers are fantastic.

5995d51c15e653ec5e63f802ca49c90d.png

Mega Man 3's section is going to be quite short in comparison to MM2, as I covered a lot of MM3 with the differences it has over MM2. But what makes MM3 so special is the sliding ability. It really adds a lot to level design and enemy encounters, making it a vital tool for dodging attacks and making effective movement. The level design is also really fun, as while MM2's is great, MM3's has little extra paths for unique Robot Master Weapons. You can use them to find little extras in the stages, but not as much compared to MM2. So, if you have a careful eye, using Rush Coil at the right spot is nine out of ten times more then enough.

Overall, MM3 is a fantastic game that like MM2, continues to improve upon the golden formula that MM1 established.

Thanks to a kind NeoGaf Member Edson, shared some thoughts and parts of MM3 that I sadly originally glossed over. Thanks for helping me out!

I mean you have Protoman which you completely omitted.

You have Rush, which completely changes up the level design.

There are also a lot of cheats if you plug in a second controller on the NES version.

A lot of enemies have environmental effects from making the screen bag, to magnetism, to spinning MM around etc.

FIrst game where Megaman does that jump and get a weapon thing.

Same with the weapons., MM can paralyze enemies, also Gemini laser can bounce off walls.

Also the whole "2 fortress" thing technically by having you go and fight 8 more bosses through 4 levels before getting to the fortress.

5995d51c15e653ec5e63f802ca49c90d.png

Before moving on to the compare/contrast between MM2 and MM3, we have the Wily Castle levels. MM2's are great, but has two annoying moments. The fight against the dragon is great, but if you don't time your jumps, very easy to die when navagating over tiny blocks. Not to mention the fight where you HAVE to use the Crash Bomber to destroy walls at the right moment. And if you run out of ammo? Have to re-do the entire level again.

MM3's Wily Castle Stages are easier with a lot of items to pick up, Rush Abilities making a lot of the harder platforming elements kinda moot and just generally being easier then before. But you have a Yellow Devil Fight and the final fight against Wily has a weakness you would never expect. Spoiler:
Its the Top Spin
.

5995d51c15e653ec5e63f802ca49c90d.png

So, one must be asking, "Why did you lump MM2 and MM3 together for one Retrospective? MM1 and MMX didn't get that...."

I'm doing that because while the games got new mechanics and more features as time went on, the base was very much the same. Iconic run-and-jump action across 8 stages in both MM2 and MM3, a Wily Fortress to take down and level design that pushes for challenge but also is fair with the level teaching you how to play as you play it with very careful and intelligent level design.

hqdefault.jpg

But gameplay wise, both Mega Man 2 and 3 are similar, but with some key differences.

latest

Mega Man 2 in many ways, is prototype Mega Man 3. I say that, as a lot of its core elements carry over into Mega Man 3. Mega Man gets one of three items from Dr. Light after clearing a set of 2 Robot Masters, which unlocks new abilities. Item 2 for example creates a flying platform Rock can ride on while Item 3 allows you to throw a spider-like platform that climbs up walls for you to hop on.

latest
latest
latest

They later evolve into this trusty robotic dog; Rush!

megaman_on_rush_by_rustico35.png

He is a major character for the classic series and the items Mega Man gets are passed down to Rush in Mega Man 3, and work even better hear. Rush Jet for example is ALOT better than Item 2.

Mega Man also learns the ability to slide on the ground by pressing down + jump (or O in the Rockman PS1 version of MM3, which is what I played on my Vita for this Retrospective). This is allows Mega Man to dodge attacks, slide under foes and even slide under platforms. Very helpful move that carries over into latter games.

MegaMan3Inline_1226329100.jpg

Mega Man continues to jump and shoot, with tighter controls and even better Robot Master items. The Leaf Shield defending against some attacks, the Metal Blade being amazingly over-powered with a ton of ammo, the Time Stopper that freezes everything in place, the Stealth Snake that allows you to attack foes by little snakes crawling on the ground, the Magnet Missile homing in on foes; amazing line up of weapons in both games that are a blast to use.

latest

Level designs in both games show a lot of growth from Mega Man 1 too, but with such a strong base, you can only get better and better as you build off that. More challenge is presented with the level design in terms of vanishing blocks, smart placement of foes and some really hard but rewarding platforming sections. Mega Man 2's Flash Man's stage and Mega Man 3's Snake Man stage come to mind.

megaman2-49.png

Boss fights are great in each game too, but Mega Man 3 goes a step further; the robot masters are brought back with beings called Doc Robots. These guys you fight in slightly harder stages you already visited (four of them) and you fight them twice but get a checkpoint after you beat the first one and also get a checkpoint just before the second Doc Robot fight, so you don't have to replay the 2nd half of the stage if you die on the second Doc Robot. What makes them 'interesting' is that they are more or less re-purposed MM2 Robot Masters; same attacks and patterns but with a larger hit box (which can be annoying to fight with). Thank you whiterabbit for the correction for this portion of the Retrospective!

MM3_DocCrash.png

These fights are okay enough, but they feel like padding in the worst possible way. Mega Man 3 also introduces a new character for Mega Man; Protoman or as he is called in Japan, Blues.

nes-mega-man-3-5.png

He is Rock's brother that Dr. Light built before Mega Man and he has a powerful Mega Buster and a large shield. He is playable in latter games but he is more or less a foe you fight here in-between stages. His fights aren't too hard but they can be annoying if you run into him with low health.

So, both Mega Man 2 and 3 improve on the core gameplay in Mega Man 1 in a lot of great ways. Nice to see sequels further improving upon gold you struck day one.

5995d51c15e653ec5e63f802ca49c90d.png

Presentation in both games is very impressive, with bolder color and more level detail compared to Mega Man 1. But Mega Man 3 suffers from its rushed state; sprite flickering is common and slowdown can be frequent. The version I played (PS1 JP version) ran well though and I only saw the sprite flickering; no slowdown.

Musically, both games are outstanding. They are some of the best soundtracks of the entire Classic series (with Mega Man 6, 7, and 9 coming close).

Overall, both of these games are outstanding action/platformers of the 8-Bit era. They are hard, challenging, but fun & rewarding. I had a blast going through both games for this Retrospective and I hope that if you never played these games, this Retrospective gives you a 'push' to give them a shot!

You can play them on anything really; Original NES or Famicom Hardware, 3DS E-Shop, PS2/GC/Xbox, PS4/X1/3DS via Legacy Collection, Vita & PSP via PS1 JP Classics (on both NA & EU PSN Store Fronts), PC via STEAM and Nintendo Wii/Wii U via VC.

Lets get rocking!

I hope you all understand why I am covering this as one thread instead of two; feel that back-and-forth between the games will lead to more content for me to write about :).

I had a lot of fun making this Retrospective, so I hope you enjoy reading it :D!

Anyone giving 3 a replay should try it with the Improvement hack if they can. It fixes a ton of the bugs and removes the slowdown. And the added ability to cycle powers with Select speeds up the gameplay and makes it more enjoyable. I found myself using Rush Coil more to grab refills I normally wouldn't since it was so much faster to switch to it without going through the menu.

It also adds an almost official looking intro that helps set up the story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQ5O9psS8t8

I like the things that 3 introduced but I hate the MM2 boss battles in it.

MM2 is great though. It's a lot easier than MM1 too so it's very replayable!

Wow, thank you for sharing this! Amazing how decades later, people can more or less patch old-school games :).

Loved when the Sonic Hacking Community did this for Sonic 3 complete and its amazing that happens for the Blue Bomber here.

Mega Man 2 is my favorite Mega Man game of all time! I know people prefer 3, but 2 is just so tight and classic.

I'm also not biased against Air Man being my favorite Robot Master honest

Yeah, it kind of reminds me of Complete in how fans have done an excellent job smoothing over rough edges and adding things that feel like they could have come from the original devs. Both hacks add a more cohesive experience for each game.

And, of course, on the original hardware: famicom or NES for the true experience ;)
Excellent topic, OP. I really love that two games. My faves among all MM games

Sorry for the mistake buddy. Will fix that in the OP right away! Glad you all enjoyed reading my Retrospective :D!

Easily the two best games I've ever played. MM2 was the first MM game I ever played and its a game that I know so well these days that I can play it through without losing any lives! I love pretty much everything about it - music, level design, bosses... plus it has my favourite Dr Wily boss design in the entire series (pity its boss pattern is so pathetically easy).

MM3 again has awesome level design, music, bosses etc. and I love the inclusion of Rush and the slide move. My only complaint since replaying the game endlessly is that the slowdown is pretty bad in places, I just put that down to the game being rushed though. Upon reflecting on the Legacy Colleciton, I'd really have liked the option to have an "enhanced version" of the game that does not have slowdown etc. That's a minor complain though, as its probably my favourite game to play alongside MM2.

The OST for Mega Man 3 is a weird one, as it had two composers attached to the game. Harumi Fujita had composed Needle, Magnet, & Gemini's themes, while her husband came in to compose the rest of the score.

Harumi's tracks were more upbeat & joyful, while the songs Yasuaki Fujita had composed were more melancholy & had a harder edge to them (which is much more evident with MM10's Solar Man Stage Theme). The castle stages in particular sounded much more sinister.

I suppose it gives the game a nice balance; Rock is having his third round taking out Robot Masters and Wily, so things sounding menacing is realistic. Besides, the 'harsher' tracks are the ones I really love from Mega Man 3 (Snake Man's Theme is outstanding, as is Protoman's theme and Wily Stage 2).

I didn't say the game had a bad OST, as it ranks as one of the best in the Classic series. But it's interesting to see how the two composers had tackled the games score, and in the end, I'm glad Mr. Fujita had step in to finish it.

And since you like Snake Man's theme, here is a link to one of my favourite remixes: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0IHRpRerCXU

It's cool. I've been enjoying reading your Mega Man retrospective, and I hope that you'll enjoy playing MM6. That game is severely underrated.

Mega Man 2 and 3 are by far my favorite games in the series.
Nothing else even comes close.

I remember being so excited for the launch of Mega Man 3. And, since I didn't have the money to buy it at the time, renting it from the video store down the street all the time.
It definitely lived up to my hype for it too - just an absolutely amazing continuation of what had been started in Mega Man 2.

I really wish more sequels could be like Mega Man 3 was to Mega Man 2.
You don't need to constantly reinvent the wheel - just do what you had been doing, but more of it, with polish.

I'm looking forward to Mega Man 5 and 6 a lot, as I never played either game XD!

Going to be a blast playing through those two for sure :). Happy you are enjoying the Retrospective so far man!

Great threads btw RK, they're fun!

Thanks for making these. Brings me back being a huge megaman fan throughout the years.

No problem :). Happy to make people look back on games they loved in the past :D!

I know I felt that way revisiting the Sonic series. So much fun reflecting on a series I have a lot of love for.

Although it doesn't bother me to cover both of them in one thread, I feel like Megaman 2 and 3 are rather different games. They have completely different boss weapons and levels, plus items vs. rush, etc. They're both good although overall I prefer 2.

I think covering them in one thread was a good move, because parts of Mega Man 2 come back with Mega Man 3 (the items vs. Rush).

I do kinda gloss over the differences between Robot Masters, so will ensure that the Mega Man 4 & 5 Retrospective will have unique sections regarding that specific point for each game, so that way both are covered equally.

Will consider editing the OP tonight and open up two new sections to talk about the different robot masters for each game.

I was brought attention to the fact that I could cover more of Mega Man 2 and 3 even though I compared the differences between them, and I agree.

So, no latter then sometime tonight, going to make to new sections in the OP that cover specific parts of Mega Man 2 (Level designs, Wily Castle) and Mega Man 3 (Level designs, Wily Castle).

Hope that gives the games more respect and greater coverage. Will ensure that Mega Man 4 & 5 and Mega Man 9 & 10's Retrospectives will have this from the start. Hope everyone is cool with this and have a great day :).

Also in my most recent playthrough of MM2 I got the quick kill on Crash Man with Air Shooter. Something I see speedrunners do and I'm not exactly sure how to set it up but I got it and it was satisfying.

Also I love Rush, but some of the puzzles and swag with Item 1 and 3 is amazing. Watched a dude streaming some romhacks and the Item 1 and 3 puzzles are awesome

Another great OP on Mega Man, thanks! MM2 is my favorite NES game and my most replayed game ever, after the original Super Mario Bros.

I've stated before that MM2 is better than 3 IMO, but to rehash again, it's better because you lose your E-Tanks when you continue. Future Mega Man games let you hold on to them when you continue, which to me negatively effects level design and replay-ability. In MM2, though, your level choices have real consequences as a certain order might be easier, but have E-Tanks/1-ups you could only get with items in harder levels. There's a real sense of risk and reward and the game is smartly designed around that. For example, Flash Man and his stage are relatively simple, but you miss out on E-Tank/1-ups if you go there without picking up one of the platform items and Crash Bombs from harder stages.

MM3 is a great game too, but that extra wrinkle puts MM2 over the top for me. And while we're here, I'll give my Top 3 MM songs:

3.) Snake Man
2.) Wily's Castle 1 (MM2)
1.) Bubble Man

Lovely writeup! MM2 remains one of my favorite games of all time; MM3 is one of my top Mega Man games, but 2 was my first Mega Man title, so nothing compares to it. I still have the NES cart!

Time was I could go through 2 almost blindfolded, and can still hum the entire soundtrack from memory. I'm not able to play it as well now that I'm older because my reaction time is much slower, so areas like the Heat Man blocks or the lasers in Quick Man's stage are frustrating. Despite that it's still tops in my heart. Bubble Man is my favorite Robot Master.

MM3 has a lot of my favorite stages and music as well. Spark Man, Snake Man, Magnet Man and Gemini Man's stages have some of my favorite series-wide music.

Boss fights are great in each game too, but Mega Man 3 goes a step further; the robot masters are brought back with beings called Doc Robots. These guys you fight in slightly harder stages you already visited (four of them) and you fight them twice with NO check points. So, you have to carefully attack these things. But what makes them 'interesting' is that they are more or less re-purposed MM2 Robot Masters; same attacks and patterns but with a larger hit box (which can be annoying to fight with).

You don't get checkpoints before the Doc Robots, but you get one checkpoint after the first Doc Robot in each stage.

Ah, I remember that now. Sorry for making that dumb mistake :(. Will edit that in the OP right now.

No worries. Looking forward to whatever else you add.

And I agree with what else you said, the Doc Robots are to be dealt with carefully and quickly.

Mega Man 2 will always be in my top 5 games of all time. I loved it so much when I was growing up. Every time I hear the Wily theme it makes me want to go kick some robot ass!

The best games of the classic series no question. I've used Proto's theme to put my kids to sleep. MM2 Wily1 is one of the best tracks in gaming. Quick Man's stage is either a mad dash or a brilliant puzzle depending on how you tackle it. MM3's slide dramatically changes the game by giving the player better mobility in boss fights, more interesting level design (Snake Man's level is brilliant). And added the Rush options to provide even more ways of tackling the terrain.

I love the X series (1-3 the most) but these are absolute classics in the truest sense of the word. Thanks for the research on the troubled development of these projects. I knew the Disney Capcom games shared a lot with Mega Man but I didn't realize how closely tied they were.

It was great seeing the positive response to my Retrospective, so thank you all for reading it and giving me feedback!

It was a lot of fun playing these two games and I hope I gave them justice, more so then originally with the edit I made to the OP (three additional sections covering unique elements to MM2, MM3 and the Wily Castle Stages in both games).

Playing MMX2 and X3 right now for tomorrow's Retrospective and I'm having a lot of fun with the games :D! Very hard, more so if you go out of your way to fight all the extra boss fights in X2, but still rewarding. Should be fun sharing my thoughts with you guys on both games when I get close to beating them tonight! Got an X avatar to celebrate me sitting down the MMX Series (I really enjoy this series of Mega Man; the air-dashing and more speed-oriented level design really clicks with me).

X3 always struck me as one of the harder X games, especially if your fighting Sigma's huge robot form without either using the Z Sabre or energy tanks. Plus back in the day I always had issues beating any of the bosses (in retrospect I shouldn't have started with Toxic Seahorse!). Thankfully I'm way better at the game now! Can't wait to read your retrospective on X2&3 this week :)

Thanks for the kind words :D!

MMX3 is a pain if you don't go the weakness order (which is what I'm doing for both X2 and X3). Plus attacks hit you like bricks too in X3 (without a latter armor upgrade), making fights even more annoying.

But both games are good fun :). Hard and annoying at points, but still, they are a lot of fun.

The X series has some great high points (X1, X4, X8), some good/great points (X2, X3, X5) and some very low points (X6 & X7), but overall its a great series of games :D.

Plus Bit and Byte/X Hunters can pop up and really mess you up if your not prepared for the fights. But I love all the optional stuff X2 and X3 get so I really can't wait to replay them myself (probably later in the year).

Honestly the only X game I don't favourably rate is X7. 3D was just a bad idea in that game that just doesn't work well and we ended up with some pretty bad levels with an unsurprisingly bad camera. Oh, and making the central character (X) an unlockable in the game is still really silly.

X6 on the other hand I do still quite like. Its just the nightmare system that ruins the game in my opinion, skewers the difficulty terribly in places. Otherwise I still enjoy the game - I love the soundtrack and love certain bosses (Rainy Turtleloid being my top choice for the game). Its outclassed by the first 5 X games, but I still enjoy playing it from time to time.

The good thing is that if you go in weakness order, you will already have the weakness for Bit or Byte (Ice Shield), so you will have a leg-up for the battle.

I tried playing X6 with the Hidden Armor for X (chat code) and it made quick work of one of the Mavericks I fought (plus it makes getting through the stage a bit easier, considering how spikes are hidden behind the screen and X's Giga Air Dash has higher reach compared to his normal Air-Dash). X6 is needlessly cheap at points but it has the strong core of X4 and X5, making it enjoyable just on that merit. X6's soundtrack is one of my favorites in the series honestly :).

Never played X7 before so......should be fun experiencing it for the very first time when I get to it :).
