Metacritic: The 25 Best Albums of 2017 So Far

3. Voyager - Moonchild
4. Dear White People The Soundtrack
5. Oddisee - The Iceberg
6. ~sohee – 低い

Violents & Monica Martin - Awake and Pretty Much Sober
Arca-Arca
Joey Bada$$'s album
J. Cole's album

Some other shit I don't remember.

There might be a lot of good music from artists I haven't been keeping up with since I stopped using Facebook. I need to check up on:

Nitty Scott MC
Nat the Lioness
Vel the Wonder
The Reminders
Stereo Nasty
Cunninlynguists
Ruby Ibarra
Klassy
Ari Lennox
Grace
Sidibe
Sammus
Moderator
SkyBlew

I need a lot more genres too: Could use some classical, pop, and reggae.

DAMN was for sure a slow burn. Completely different reaction to it for me now than at release. And it's on par with TPAB for me. Accordingly so, it's place at #1 confirms critics heard back then what I hear now.

And Big Fish Theory was a letdown.

I vastly prefer gkmc but I can't deny k.dot the number one spot, deserves it.
RTJ3 should be top 3 but they have hit that point where miserable fucks are turning against them because they get too much attention.

A lot of bands on the list sound like the kind of artists that only five people in a vape bar in Portland would know about.

Edit: big fish theory deserves its spot too, as does 4:44. Rap fans have become an ugly infighting bunch though, so it doesn't surprise me to see some of the hate in here.
Wish mc eihts album was getting more attention.

My girls SZA and Kelly Lee Owens robbed. Otherwise good list. Glad to see Arca and Laurel Halo so high up. Only album I don't agree with here is Melodrama, or at least that high up. It's alright, but I would say most the albums below it are more deserving of a 90+ score if anything.

Edit: Oh and actress robbed too. Loved the album!

They must not be considering RTJ3 as a 2017 release, because it has an 88 Metascore, which would put it in the top 5 of this list.

IDK, RTJ3 is okay, but a step-down from its predecessor. Same with Big Fish

DAMN is a worthy winner at the midpoint, even if it isn't perfect. It has real longevity. 4:44 deserves love too, it's solid.

Hoping Nas drops something this year.

I like Vince Staples but what the fuck is Big Fish doing there?

Damn shouldn't be there either tbh. Definitely his weakest album since Section .80.

There are a couple of standout tracks(DNA, XXX and maybe FEAR) but it's nothing special overall and has it's fair share of filler/weak shit.

Edit: Summertime '06 is WAY better than Big Fish as well

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
That Haim album sucks, and it's the worst in that it's surface generic "indie rock" to appeal to the masses.

To be fair Courtney Barnett's last big album also sorta fit this critism as the token indie rock song you'd see in an Apple commercial or hear on Beats 1. At the same time while her album can be ernest she also doesn't give a fuck so. I mean have you listened to Aqua Profonda? She purposefully doesn't take herself too seriously.

Being Metacritic, this is more a gauge of bandwagon jumping and name recognition than quality, really. Metacritic is not where I'd be looking for music to begin with, because music is too varied and specific to individual taste; Metacritic is better for less-crowded spaces, like "which of the handful of movies at my theater should I see this weekend?" "What's the best RPG that came out this year," etc.

It's usually better to explore genres that are catching your fancy through playlists, hashtags, Hype Machine, auto-generated radio stations, etc. Still, sort of interesting to see what "consensus" looks like, however meaningless it is given the apples to oranges comparisons going on between each album here.

Does people realize this only counts new releases overall ratings and not personal preferences by the metacritic staff?
