Microsoft has reversed the deprecation of Microsoft Paint today after people went online to show their support for MS Paint: http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/ct-microsoft-keeping-paint-20170725-story.html

Microsoft Paint isn’t going anywhere after all.

After an outcry of longtime aspiring digital artists, Microsoft had a change of, umm, art, and said it would not discontinue the classic program. Instead, the company said an app version would be available in the Windows store.

“MS Paint is not going away,” Calli Rose, Microsoft spokesperson said in an email. “In addition to the new 3D capabilities, many of the MS Paint features people know and love like photo editing and 2D creation are in Paint 3D — the new app for creativity, available for free with the Windows 10 Creators Update. In the future, we will offer MS Paint in the Windows Store also for free and continue to provide new updates and experiences to Paint 3D so people have the best creative tools all in one place

The reversal came after word spread Monday that Microsoft planned to push Paint out of its software picture, putting it on a list of “deprecated” features that would be included in the company’s Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, set to be released this fall. The categorization meant that Paint would be available as part of the software package come autumn, but that it would not longer be subject to active development and could go away.

The label led to numerous tweets from longtime users who took to the program to paint how they were feeling. The hashtag “RIPMSPaint” was also trending throughout the day.

Microsoft later published a blog post saying the outcry of fan support led the company to change its mind on Paint.

“Today, we’ve seen an incredible outpouring of support and nostalgia around MS Paint,” Microsoft said in its blog post. “If there’s anything we learned, it’s that after 32 years, MS Paint has a lot of fans. It’s been amazing to see so much love for our trusty old app

Other programs Microsoft had marked for death on Monday were Outlook Express and its Reader app, which will be merged to a be a part of its Edge Web browser. Neither were met with the level of protests that Paint generated.

I didn't even know it was on the chopping block, but thank god they're keeping it. It's still the best program for quickly resizing and croping images, as well as doing quick and simple pixel art.

I swear the reaction would have been 100 times less noteworthy had they just named Paint3D simply "Paint" and never included both versions simultaneously.

I'm glad its not going away entirely but its a tad annoying that I'll have to reinstall it manually whenever I install Windows in the future.

Awesome!
Sometimes the simplest things are the best. That's why I like Paint. It's fast, and insanely simple. Glad to see they're going to keep it around.

I heard this on the radio this morning.

They also heard paint 3d was coming and started talking about how removing paint was a publicity stunt to draw more attention to this new paint and they were never going to remove paint.

Lol

Cool. Never use it much outside of quick edits and cropping photos, but I'm glad that it's sticking around.

Good. Now let's get them to re-enable Windows Photo Viewer. Having to make a registry change is annoying. At first I thought it was gone in favor of that terrible Photo app thing.

Wasn't this the plan all along? To make more people use Paint 3D while they still had a way to access paint? The whole outcry seemed to be based on fake and incomplete information and even the 'apology' post quoted in the OP has been sliced to fit the narrative of a change of mind, while reading it in full makes it seem that they wanted to clarify things.

Yep. The plan was to deprecate Paint. As in stop updating it, and probably stop installing it by default with Windows. Microsoft never said they would forcibly uninstall it with with Windows update, or never allow it to be installed on new PCs.

Basically an overreaction to partial information.

Well good. They'd be dumb to scrap it.

Holy shit, get dicked. People who write terrible puns like this and claim to be professional writers should get fired on the spot.

I'm happy about this. I find Photoshop confusing and Snipping Tool isn't pixel perfect.
That's a terrible reason not to use such a versatile tool in the age of Youtube tutorials.

Best way to market is to pretend you're ending or stopping something.

Of course not sure what needs marketing for Paint but I see "I'm stopping doing this" or "We're discontinuing that" and it's a flurry of social media posts as a result.
