Microsoft screws up Halo 4 DLC release, pretends it was intentional

Reading again, it seems the maps aren't actually free.

its only free access for a limited time.

hmmm...hope they don't fuck up and cut us all off.

Packet, specializations, game items, etc. Yeah the maps were a big draw, but you shouldn't have got the LE if you just wanted maps, the stand alone pass was a better deal. (Then at least)

Packet -lol
Specializations - Ones that everyone else got for free if they played it during x period and weren't living in Europe.
Game items - Skin for the default armor in the game and a skin for the AR. :IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

Meanwhile people who pick up even the standard edition at x retailer can bypass the 1 billion assassinations for their shiny Venator armor or whatever.

Microsoft made a mistake that favors some users temporarily, and the PR department might not be helping with their spin. However, as customers, should we be mad that more people get to enjoy these maps? Does the fact someone gets something for free temporarily devalues what we own? I see a very sad attitude among gamers who are complaining about this. The whole industry from publishers to users has gone to hell.

This is a great idea for future pre order DLC. The people that want to pay for it can pay for it and the people that don't can get it for free. Good deal.

Their extreme about face is funny considering they're completely documented as acknowleding as a glitch/fuckup before, then I guess once PR figured out something the story changed.

They really expect me to believe that Halo 4 now has a map pack trial system, akin to Fable 2, that was never mentioned until today.

Halo 4 has been the shittiest game launch I have ever been involved with. Fucking embarrassing.

Hey Microsoft.

Can I have my money back now?

I won't buy Halo 5 until you refund me.

Thanks,

Bye.

IF its temporary Im pretty sure everyone would be fine with it. It does not sound like it will be temporary though.

I was curious on Halo 4, but between this and the word of mouth of many Halo fans I know, I'm quickly realizing this is the worst entry in the whole series. I wasn't that into Halo but it sounds disappointing.

The core gamplay is fine. Too bad they went and made it some weird COD/Halo hybrid that no halo fan wants.

I'm saying people that bought the LE just for the map pass paid too much already.

Don't know the US numbers but here is what I have paid :

LE Halo 4 79,99€

Normal edition would have cost 59,99€

Season pass is 2000 msp.

I adds up perfectly here, also I bought it for the season pass and the specialisations, that also were made free for US players only.

The only thing for worth is Forward unto Dawn in the LE.

Just seems like overreaction. How bout we wait and see what they do? Or would people rather lose their shit over $10 and not even see what MS comes back with after the press covers this?

Yeah, that sounds like people grasping at straws based on vague wording from an Xbox.com support forum post ("complimentary access period", which I take to mean "until we patch out our mistake because oh god we're losing money"). I don't even know if I'd want it to be temporary. The DLC adoption rate seems to be pretty high. I'd just like my cash back if they're treating it like a promotion and not a glitch - the underhanded weaseling they're trying to do with it disgusts me far more than the actual mistake.

Hey Microsoft,

Go fuck yourself.

Never getting a season pass again from these chuckleheads.

They've set a precedent already. It's too late for wait and see.

Where is the file browser?

Yeah, fuck that.
Their handling of this game has been completely unacceptable.
I'm done. Bungie please come back.

That's nice they got free stuff and we have more users but I just lost money. The map pass was released awhile ago to entice people to purchase and save money on the maps in the long run.

Why buy map passes or LE games if they're going to do this and hurt fans that are supporting them from day one. And...they have people that paid 10 for the maps. I know they can'tbe happy about this either.

Just give map pass/LE owners 800 MS points and let this pack stay free. The game gets a much needed player boost and everyone's happy.

And the people who bought this map pack. Sure, sounds good to me.

Regardless, I don't see the fuss. They fucked up, and can't seem to undo that fuck up, so they're expanding it out as a temporary, "free promotion".

I'm having a hard time understanding the rage. I'm all for any and all rage at LE's and Season Passes though, justified or not. Go to town.

Considering the 343 post about it mentions that there were complications with rolling out the map pack, that people will have access for a limited time but those with the LE or Map Pass will still have access beyond the 18th, the headline of the OP seems incorrect. They're admitting it was a mistake, and are giving people limited access for a week.

Personally I was debating on getting the season pass or not, I'll try the maps out. I wish more games gave folks a test drive of DLC.

This is bad for Microsoft, but a welcome surprise for me considering how I wasn't even planning to buy the Crimson Map Pack.

Skipping the collector's version of Halo 4 was the right decision.

the refund should only be 400 points.

2000 for map pass
2400 without

first maps free, 2400-800=1600

If they refund us 400, we're all square.

can someone tell me how I'm supposed to get the map pack now? it's 800msp on marketplace still, nothing in my download queue (only the 108kb unlock key).

Gears did something shady with their first map pack. Made it free for everyone, but you had to pay for 'private' matches.

This is just hilarious. Halo 4 is a disaster.

I need to find a way to repent for all my years of Bungie bashing.

No, they're giving away the map pack for a limited time. It'll be on your hard drive forever and it will never be taken away. They are NOT saying that you have limited time to play the maps.

Well that post certainly made it sound otherwise, but you're probably right. Not that I give a shit anyways though as this map pack is barely worth the space on my hard drive.

You have to start up Halo 4 and go to the "Xbox Live Marketplace" option. Then hit "purchase" on the map pack. It'll then bypass the payment screen and start to download right there.

What the hell am I defending? I am noting that if you just wanted maps, the separate pass is the better deal for most. Has nothing to do with free maps.

Everyone is overreacting.

I bought the standard game and the maps. I'm still out approximately $8.33 because of this, or about 10% of my total purchase.

I had 10% of my purchase for this game essentially stolen from me.

I have every right to be pissed.

Huh, maybe they'll give something to people who bought the season pack now. They kind of owe them because now they spent MORE with it.

Unless you're reading a different notice, it gives people who played the game in the first 14 days one week of access to the Crimson Map pack. I'm unclear how that takes 8.33 out of your pocket.

I with you about nearly all other points of the game and forum discourse surrounding it, but not this one. This is clearly a fuckup. One that severely devalues the LE further.

Think. Use that stuff between your ears for something other than padding, if the map pack is on your hard drive it's not coming off.

The people who downloaded the maps are not going to have them taken away.

And even if you were right, which you're not, I could have done something like try the maps for two weeks and decided not to buy them.

I have lost money.

I am confused as hell right now, where did I say anything about this not being a screw up. I was talking about the LE, not the free map thing.

Their promotion is utter bullshit, what makes their spin of "temporary access" any less bullshit? Look at the responses from the official support Twitters and it'll give you all the indication that this was a giant mistake on their part as opposed to something planned (like what would have to be required for trial DLC.) Not to mention that it wasn't conveyed ANYWHERE that there'd be trial DLC until today. No, I'd say it's much more likely that either they're either lying about temporary access or they meant it as in after the 18th the maps will have their regular price and those that got them for free will keep them forever.

I invite you to do the same. Given that they said limited access then I would assume by that statement they have a way of locking those who haven't paid for it out. Of course if in a week that's untrue then yeah, that's an issue.

There are full game download trials on the Playstation that lock you out after playing a set amount of time, you have the game on your HD still though.

This whole game is just a hot mess. Reserving my official judgments on 343 for Halo 5 though; giving them the benefit of the doubt for this one.

I don't think I'll tag around for Halo 5. Probably just going to ride the Destiny train.
