Played the DS version during traveling on train, awesome time-killer too. 2 hours just flew by.

Oh yeah, you might also consider an NGP port when that thing comes out. Just saying :p

The achievement for completing everything is broken. It's the only one I'm missing, and yes I'm pretty sure I literally have done everything, I even went back to each campaign and talked to everyone all over again.

Besides that, I absolutely LOVE this game. It's very easy to pick up and play, and it's very fun experimenting with different units and artifacts. In fact, I love this game even more than I loved Puzzle Quest 1, which required too much time investment to play online. Also, love the balancing tweaks made for the XBLA version.

I've clocked easily over 40 hrs, 25 in the SP, the rest in MP and testing setups in quick battles. I'm still playing the MP, it's really hits the spot for a strategy-puzzle game craving. Great job Capy!

I wonder why it worked OK for me: -

Did you complete all of the side quests before beating the final boss? I did, but if you went back and left some side quests until after beating the boss, maybe it's to do with that. Or maybe you've missed something and haven't noticed.

Yea I had no issues with any of the achivements either, but I did make sure to finish up everything before I finished off the boss. That's an easy patch though so if it is bugged, I wouldn't worry about it.

Is there a list of everything that needs to be done in order to get that achievement? I'm seriously baffled over what I could have missed doing.

There's really not much to check.

- All bounty quests
- All misc. sidequests (silver swords, silver question marks)
- All Puzzle Quests
- Did you beat all the fights in the Arena in Godric's tale?
- All Artefacts

I havent got this achievement or played past Godric's tale yet (got sidetracked) but I cant think of what the issue could be. Try reading x360a's board for any ideas if they figured it out.

I did everything before I beat the last boss. All the puzzles, all the artifacts. x360a's forum lists it as a glitchy achievement. As much as I love the game, I'm not sure if I want to plonk down another 24 hrs running through the entire campaign again.

Are there any random encounters in the last chapter of the game? Is it possible to max out Nadia's units?
Yes there are, in fact her chapter has by far the most random encounters

I've read that it is possible the bug is tripped if you started playing the game while it was in a trial state then purchased the game and went on to complete using that same save file.

Supposedly if you bought the game from either in or out of the game and then started a new game save file it's all fine.

It sounds like the theory makes sense but I don't know, can anyone specifically debunk it by saying they started their file in the trial, purchased on that same file, then completed the game and got the achievement?

And whatever the case, I wouldn't replay 25 hours of gameplay for this achievement either. Just wait for the patch :)

That certainly sounds like it. That's exactly what I did. =(
Looks like there's no two ways about it then.

Hey Cromulent_Word can you go down the hall, find the dude who designed the missions where you have to defend something and punch him in the face as hard as you fucking can*.

* If this person is you, feel free to grab the hair on the back of your head and slam your face into your desk as hard as possible as a substitute.

Thanks!

A lot of XBLA games seem to have that problem where you don't get X achievement if you play from the trial. I know BG&E has the same issue with the hovercraft.

That said... glad I bought this immediately without touching the trial!

He's probably referring to levels where you have to beat someone, while not getting something hurt. For example in Anwen's level, you have to beat an enemy while you have this GIANT FOUR SQUARE ACORN in the immediate middle of the screen, that dies in -one- hit.

Except you can move the giant acorn. So it's actually really easy. :)

Anyone playing lots of multiplayer?

I'm having a hard time trying to beat Godric/Varkas players who take the royal crown and rely on Angels for damage. Typically once they charge the angel and protect it with walls I'm screwed. Even worse is when they have 2 angels out.

I like to play rushdown with Anwen using Deer + Unicorn, or Markal using Ghosts + Wraith + spider cloak or Aiden using Nightmare casades.

Every odd time I can beat them using Anwen, but it still gets very close. I've thought about using Cyric and using the Djinns to destroy them, but once they stick up their super awesome walls it becomes almost impossible once again.

I think Necromancers have an artifact that makes the walls 50% for your opponent. Otherwise instead of trying to kill the angels, just absorb the damage by your own champions.

Another thing is that if you link core units right behind your champion, they will attack first and break through some walls, then your champion has more chance to break through to the Angels.

Rare Frankman gaming side appearance!

You're looking at a 20-25 hour game here. 4-5 hours per character with 5 characters. At least if the final 3 chapters are the same length as the first 2. Through the first 2 my game-clock is at 10:00 exactly while doing everything possible.

There's multiplayer too. I had a hard time finding a game though.
I appear like a couple times a week, but you gotta search hard!

I'm on the fence about this, I usually don't buy PSN games but there's actually alot of content coming out I want to get. I probably would've bought it last week if it wasn't for ... you know.

FUCK Lord Dragonwhatever boss in Chapter 5 (end boss?). I cannot figure out the strategy to beat him. Can't freeze his hands, everything takes forever to shoot off, outside of "surviving" for ages with a mixture of lots-a-walls and using the take-my-magic-energy on, you don't get enough time to actually hit him.

For me, I made buttloads of walls, and used the artifact that started me off with a full spell gauge at the beginning. I had Mages and Phoenix's in the end. The Phoenix were used to block the central beam damage. I made triple layers of walls on the sides, which absorbed most of the damage from his hands.

The biggest issues i had was keeping troops alive, not to damage him, but to keep him from charging the Center Beam. Since he's so big, Nadia's Lightning call really did a number on him each and every time.

Also note that hitting inactive hands resets them back to their start point, and he seems to enjoy blasting areas with lots to kill, so distracting him by making walls and units away from the main force helps.

Nadia's walls start at full strength if you have enough already made, she has the largest amount of fast troops to use, and this makes it pretty easy to control the hands damage as soon as you see where he sets them.

I liked the fact that this battle reminded me of a final battle in something like Shining Force. Perfect with all the little details like glows and uber-attacks.

Oh, and all achievements I've earned locked without a hitch, as well.

Even if I can bring the walls down, Fiona or Markal doesn't have the firepower to consistently take down an angel quickly without having to use a champion themselves. With a 50% power boost using Varkas' spell, an angel can easily reach 150+ damage. No mean feat trying to stop it. Leaving 2 entire columns of walls sitting there to absorb the damage isn't much better, assuming you do manage to build that much in the first place. Even if you've got enough walls to absorb enough to stay alive, the residual walls left behind are probably going to hinder you from making meaningful comeback assault.

Champions are feeling kind of overpowered right now considering that trying to kill one before they charge is always way harder than getting them charged and a strong defensive play style (especially Griffin empire) that's backed up by champions seems to always triumph over a style that emphasizes on sheer speed.

What? If they can eke out one more link, so be it. Be a tad more patient. Or is the timer that long (never was online)?

Some odd differences between DS and PS3 version:
When I fail a puzzle on the PS3, the cursors standard is on retry: no. Huh?
Also, there is no difficulty selection in Quick match. Nor is there a way to select my oponents faction. Strikes me as odd when it's in the DS version.

So, after beating the game a few days ago, I've finally seen fit to try online play today...

My initial desire was to abuse everyone online with Nadia / Academy units... but man do they seem SO underpowered in Online play! Granted, I haven't tried everything... But there's a lot of "Delaying the inevitable...." feel with Cyrus and Nadia!

So Transformation Gem Only works well when it's just Mages, and no second Champion/elite, in my experience. And am I to understand the Artifact that causes "Enemies to SHATTER when hit by Djin's ice" means dual Djinn attack means instant KO on the first creature in a row, regardless of HP?

Turn timer is kinda a joke too, I have to say. It's SOOOO long. Not once WITH the timer did I ever feel pressured to make my moves...

Oh, and a random desire I'd love to see in a patch for the game, if it is possible: A Gallery viewer would be fantastic. It'd be great to get to zoom in on these sprites, and watch their animations, to view the speech art without text blocks, and to look at the story cinematic art again.

I've been on holidays for the past ten days and I anticipated that I'd spent most of my gaming time playing Yakuza 4 or Portal 2 but instead I ended up sinking most of my time into this gem of a game. I ended up finishing the campaign mode in 30 hrs.

Any word on whether we'll be getting any DLC or a full blown sequel? I tried online play and its not really for me but I could happily play more single player.

Yeah. I honestly feel that Academy is bottom tier. Their best core unit is the gremlin, which is only good for defence or wall destroying. Mages are too slow, Djinns's special ability can both aid and hinder. Rakshasas are good for limiting an opponent's spell, and Titans and Phoenixes are moderately useful. Nadia's spell is probably the 2nd worst in the game due to its random nature. Cyrus is a little better, but still it doesn't do direct damage to the enemy hero.

How I feel the factions stack up:
1) Griffin: Slow, but they have the best walls and the hardest hitting units. Varkas using only Angels is almost unstoppable. When linked and with his spell active, an Angel can do 200+ damage in a single shot. And when there's 2 Angels out in the field at once it's almost impossible to stop.

2) Sylvan: Fastest units, and they have the 2nd best walls. Anwen gets a direct damage spell that hits for 49 if completely unblocked. Dual charging Unicorns is the best chance for stopping Champions. Findan's spell with a Treant makes for fast games and unpredictable comebacks.

3) Heresh: Unusual abilities, poor walls. Fiona's spell is good direct damage while Markal's is useful in a pinch for defence. People who pick them in multiplayer like to pick the Spider Cloak as well, which makes for very fast games swinging in either way. Spider Cloak + Death Knight makes it almost impossible for the opponent to make any sort of attack, and the resulting damage from the Death Knight's attack almost always results in an instant death.

3) Sheogh: Jezebeth's spell is probably the worst in the game. Aidan's is better, but is better used as a game ending spell rather than for normal offence, since it destroys all your walls. Nightmare cascades can end the game very quickly, as quickly as the 1st cascade itself. Sorcerors are one of the two units that can effectively stop a champion, but getting them to arrive on the field takes a little luck.

5) Academy: The only real use I can think of them is for double Djinns with the Djinn sash equipped to kill off champions quickly. But otherwise I feel they have the worst walls, and are terrible.

I'm not sure if it just KO's the first creature in a row, but yeah it works regardless of HP. I try to save two Djinns up and use them on Champions. But since the freeze effect only lasts for 3 turns without fusing Djinns, your 2nd Djinn must activate latest by the next turn.

If you have problems in MP, try practicing setups with yourself with a 2nd controller, since quick battle doesn't let you choose your opponent. Since there are some godly setups you can also try to anticipate your opponent's choices and counter pick your faction.

Other general tips: Always link your attacks. Linking increases your MP very quickly. Never put down too many walls. Once you get yourself walled in, you've got no more space or units left to organise an offence or a defence. If the opponent has a champion that hasn't started charging yet, pressure it as much as you can. When they have a champion charging, depending on the champion, either take it down with as much fire power as you can or build walls and hope to survive or, if you have fast units, ignore the champion completely and focus on killing the opponent hero before the champion activates.

This game is just damn fun. I sat down to play last night "for a few minutes" ended up playing for 2 hours straight.

It wasn't even on my radar until I read about it on here.

Been spending some quality time with this quality game recently. Quite possibly the best £10 I've ever spent. The Campaign took me a good 20+ hours and because the gameplay's so fun I've been messing around in offline vs as well. Haven't been online due to lack of Gold, plus I've heard enough stories about Varkas + champions to make me wary of it anyway.

I'm favouring Heresh (either Fiona or Markal depending on mood) with Skeletons and Zombies as cores and Ghosts and Death Knights as specials. Really loving Ghosts for their dual purpose use as both a wall and attacker. Heresh's artifacts aren't the best (with the exception of the Spider Cloak, which I dislike using almost out of principle), but I'll usually go with either Cursed Shield or Ritual Dagger. The latter's great at hindering champion charges, while the former is just generally useful and goes some way to ensuring Zombies get to deliver their payload.

Game could use some balance tweaking here and there (lol Academy), but overall it's the biggest surprise hit I've had the pleasure of playing for some time.

Why did you give a so important advantage to the host? The first to play should only have one point of action in the first turn.

You really should try to get some Gold and try it online. It's almost an entirely different game.

Varkas + champions aren't unbeatable even though it's top tier. The 1st game I played last night I was using Varkas + Angels only, and got beaten in my very first game vs a lvl 9 player (I'm 40+, w/l over 2). Granted he was using Fiona + spider cloak (which I also detest out of principle), I literally had no option against his attacks. In the 2nd game he stuck with Heresh, and I counter picked with Anwen, archers, druids and unicorn and beat him very quickly.

Actually with very specific setups, Academy isn't totally useless. I found this out the hard way. I got trashed by someone using Cyrus, Rakshasa only and Absorb circlet. It's now one of my favorite setups. Mages with the artifact that lets you fuse all mages is quite good too. 3 fused mages give 100 damage unlinked!

I'm not sure that it's that big a disadvantage. Sure, it puts the non-host on defense most of the time, but if you can memorize turns to charge for all units it's not that hard to counter. I think trying to anticipate your opponent's picking of units and artifacts plays into the strategy a little.

Against people who know how to play and who don't make any mistakes it's almost impossible to win. It's not rare to be able to activate two champions in the first turn.

Two elites you mean? I don't actually think activating 2 elites in the host's 1st turn is all that easy, a lot of it really depends on your luck with all your initial unit placement. But yeah, I do think think that when going up against someone who knows what he's doing, it's hard to win, whether he's the host or not doesn't seem to factor in as much.

Yeah it's my grand strategy to unlock everything and then descend upon multiplayer with reckless abandon, but somehow I think it won't work that way. Hey I notice you are like the only person on my friends list that has gotten the Backbone Sega games too, I will have someone to challenge in Streets of Rage 2 now LOL

Also doesn't help me to be trying to play 10 XBLA games at the same time...this one is without a doubt sucking up most of my time.

P.S. You are also challenged at Worms 2 LOL, I have been wanting someone to play at that one rather than the super stupid AI

Yeah, whatever they are called in the English version. Big guys.

Well, when you start you certainly have an advantage so giving only 1 point at first would reduce it.

Gaspode >> looks like you've found your soul mate

So I used one of my 48 hour cards I had lying around and spent some time online. Lost my first two matches due to Ghosts being ineffective compared to basically any champion, which made me sad because I love them as units. Then started using a Markal / 3x Zombie / Death Knight / Bone Dragon / Cursed Shield setup and won every match, even against LV 50+ players who were clearly better than me. Not really sure how I feel about that.

Mixed it up a little with some other factions along the way and had some really close matches (one where I was saved a turn before certain death thanks to Aidan's spell doing nearly 100 damage). Ended up 12-4 with a 7 streak still going.

Funnily enough, I never saw a Varkas actually get to use Holy Charge on anything.

Second campaign, early battle before you get any elite units:
Fuck that stupid gate. I hate it. I hate it so much! Took like four tries :(. I feel as though the knight completely outshines both other basic units. Their idle defense is bananas, and fusing with them is really easy with the long charge time. Am I missing something?

Now that I am on GAF, I had to pledge my love and unwavering devotion to Capy and, more specifically, this game. <3 Clash of Heroes was one of my favorite DS games of '09, and now it's one of my favorite XBLA titles. It's funny how everyone went crazy for Puzzle Quest, which was great at the time, but now I think PQ2 is shit and pales in comparison to Dungeon Raid on iOS and Clash of Heroes, both of which evolve the puzzle-RPG concept and make them much more skill-based and so much less luck-driven.

I'm on Nadia's chapter now, plinking away at the campaign before really turning to multiplayer. I forgot how long the game was, but I also remember that the DS version counted your time in sleep mode so I'm pretty sure I had roughly 120 hours clocked at my final save point. :p

For me it's the Spearmen. If you link and fuse them, you can often deal their full damage since they will simply curbstomp everything short of champions. Sure, defense 2vs3 is a difference but their offensive capabilities are nuts.
In case you didn't notice, spearmen have first strike, which means if they are stronger than the oposing unit, they take 0 damage. They can kill a whole line and still deal 100%. With the golden spear, it even works against walls!! Zombies are nice too, you will see later :p
