So, apparently I missed the news over Christmas that V8 Supercars has done a deal to be payTV exclusive except for 6 races from 2015. Fucking awesome. :/

From December: http://www.smh.com.au/sport/motorsport/v8-supercars-tv-deal-will-divide-fans-20131221-2zrto.html

There are clear winners and losers from V8 Supercars' six-year $241 million media deal starting from 2015. Make no mistake, the deal - all media including digital - with Foxtel, Fox Sports and the Ten Network is a good one for the investors in V8 Supercars Australia. It is significantly richer than the last-minute, existing two-year arrangement with Channel Seven. But not all race fans will be thrilled.

Every follower, who for 20 years has watched V8 Supercars on TV for no spend, will be disappointed, and the V8 teams may be dismayed with the ripple effect commercially.

The big winner is pay TV, which will use the deal to attract a legion of new subscribers. Foxtel will show everything, meaning every session live for all three or four days comprising every round. In high definition. V8 Supercars CEO James Warburton insists the deal will lead to ''unprecedented coverage on multiple platforms for our sport, never before seen on such a scale''.

The devil is in the detail yet to surface. Ten will get a six pack of marquee events to keep various government partners happy - the Bathurst 1000, Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, Sydney 500, plus the Gold Coast, Townsville and one other. Free-to-air viewers will also welcome Ten's late-night one-hour highlight package of rounds it doesn't show live. Live free-to-air TV is where the big viewing numbers should be. From 2015, this freebie will be throttled back.

The deal may be remembered as the moment the best interests of the V8 Supercars and its fans took a side swipe from the business side of the sport. Angry fans have set social media alight with their condemnation of a deal that might require them forking out more than $1200 a year to watch their favourite sport.

They have 14 months to come to grips with the new world of paying to watch sport. Those hardcore speed nuts who already subscribe to Foxtel will be delighted with total access to pizza with the works.

Those of the V8 Supercars demographic who can't afford pay TV will now get to watch just six races a year live. Any thoughts the coverage from 2015 will be wildly innovative and markedly different from the Seven telecasts are misplaced because the treatment will continue to be handled by V8 Supercars TV.

...

One final thought: on the back of this strong TV deal, what's the betting that majority owner Archer Capital will sell the V8 Supercars within 18 months?

Also seems the teams were pissed off the previous deal didn't give them any dividend from the sale of the rights so they wanted it to go for more money:

http://www.motoring.com.au/news/2013/motorsport-v8-supercars-move-to-pay-tv-and-ten-40728

The Seven Network, whose existing two-year contract to telecast the championship will end next season, said it had “put forward an offer for a new television agreement that represented a substantial increase on the current rights agreement and one which made financial sense for Seven and V8s and would have ensured its presence on Australia’s leading television network for years to come”.

But V8 Supercars chief executive James Warburton said the Fox-Ten deal was “tremendous and significant for our sport”.

“It is a great boost to our amazing race teams and fans and will lead to unprecedented coverage on multiple platforms for our sport, never before seen on such a scale,” Warburton said.

He said Fox and Ten had committed “to grow this sport to unprecedented levels”.

...

A previous six-year deal between V8 Supercars and Seven reputedly was worth $28 million a season, but the late deal done for this year and next is believed to have been for only about $18 million a season.

Warburton’s predecessor David Malone did that deal and it was perceived to have cost him his job soon after.

Teams were irate that it did not provide enough revenue for them to receive dividends from V8 Supercars, which is majority-owned by private equity company Archer Capital.

While Seven has said it was prepared to pay a lot more beyond 2015, Warburton has pulled off a financial coup in the deal struck with Fox and Ten, although there could be repercussions from fans if they no longer get to see all races free.

So fuck them too.

Fuck them all. Not only do the teams not get a cut, but what about the lack of visibility for the sponsors?!? What a fucking joke. That pretty much signals the death of FTA motorsport in the country. F1 was barely a blip, but at least the V8s were always on at a time that people could watch them.

Do they expect bogans to pony up for Foxtel just to watch the races? I think they're soooorely mistaken.

Also lol @ the guy losing his job after brokering that deal

Hey, so, I'm prototyping a car HUD for an interactive design class. I hope this isn't too obtrusive, but I need to survey some people about what they'd want out of car HUDs and thought this thread (and maybe the F1 thread) might be the best place to ask. It's super short, like, two to three minutes.

[EDIT: Survey's over, thanks people]

Thanks. And if this is too off topic I can take the link down asap.

There have been a few wrecks in Daytona 500 practice today. One car had a couple other cars get underneath it enough to put it on the hood of one car and it was sliding along on top of the wall. They're doing repairs to the catch fence now.

Jeff Gordon had a roof flap stuck in the nose of his car. Never seen that before.

Edit: The wreck that red flagged practice is already on YouTube.

What the fuck. This is terrible for aussie Motorsport in general.

Watching the ALMS Baltimore round from 2013.
That start crash was incredible. What a terribly laid out street circuit

This is somewhat similar to MotoGP's move to BT Sports, or more accurately, F1's move to Sky in the UK.

It's sad to think the health of those sports takes second fiddle to the team's revenue.

FTA for full motorsports series are a dying breed unless it's state funded.

The track is finally dry and the Truck race will be starting soon. The Truck and Nationwide races will be interesting, since NASCAR banned the tandem drafting this season.

Holy shit, every car was doing it in that video! Sounds like banning it is a good thing.
Banning it should happen, but it's NASCAR's own fault for being clueless with rule packages. They could do stuff with bumper height to make push-drafting literally impossible, but that would require a base level of intelligence among the powers that be.

Thinking we should put up a Daytona 500 thread in OT. IIRC it's the one NASCAR race people seem to give a crap about (when we did the NASCAR OT it was active for that one week and ... dead)

I'll do it, but what should I put in it apart from this link?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcaT-mS2JNM

I was really hoping for a humorous Daytona 500 thread. You need a description of what the action will be like (turning left, etc), the track dimensions, perhaps some highlights from years past. I was thinking of a little more done up version of something like this: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=528300

Edit: will 50 Cent be there? http://25.media.tumblr.com/d021dcf1941e31ff0f6fb4e7b0b2c95a/tumblr_mir68zcoVP1rlvyzqo1_500.gif

Daww I had just thrown one together! Feel free to use any of it, quote to see

Edit: the part after the OT should have been G/A/F? :p

Hooooly shit. V8Supercars streaming is via Foxtel (Australian domestic cable company) only. No Foxtel, no streaming. Basically 'fuck you, international fans'.
http://www.v8supercars.com.au/news/...e-details-of-2015-2020-media-rights-agreement

- A 360 per cent increase in television content to 1140 hours per year.

- Unprecedented breadth of coverage and content; new production innovation; prime time promotion.

- Six major events – the Clipsal 500 Adelaide, Townsville 500, Wilson Security Sandown 500, Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, the Gold Coast 600 and the Sydney 500 – live on TEN and simulcast in High Definition on FOX SPORTS.

- Every practice, ARMOR ALL Qualifying session, ARMOR ALL Top Ten Shootout and race live, in High Definition and ad-break free (excluding Bathurst) on FOX SPORTS.

- Highlights program including every race, Sundays at 4pm, on TEN, one hour highlights packages on ONE in prime time on Saturdays and Sundays at 8.30pm, and on TEN on Saturdays and Sundays at 11.30pm.

- Return of the highly popular motorsport panel show RPM on TEN; plus magazine shows V8Xtra and Motorsport 360 on FOX SPORTS.

- All races live and on demand on Foxtel Play and Foxtel Go; Foxtel Play and Foxtel Go to provide unique and rich content to portable devices.

- Daily highlights of every race on www.tenplay.com.au, plus special features and unique content.

- Foxtel and FOX SPORTS to launch triple play packages later this year.

V8 Supercars fans will enjoy more than three times the overall content after further details of the 2015-2020 media rights were revealed.

The record $241 million deal, the largest in the history of the sport, delivers sustainability to the teams that drive the sport and also provides unparalleled access for fans domestically and internationally.

It was revealed today that there would be 1140 hours of broadcast television across FOX SPORTS and Ten Network from next year.

That represents a 360 per cent increase in high octane TV, meaning more V8 Supercars more often and in more places.

Six major events – the Clipsal 500 Adelaide, Townsville 500, Wilson Security Sandown 500, Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, the Gold Coast 600 and the Sydney 500 – will be broadcast live and in full on TEN and simulcast ad-break free (with the exception of Bathurst) in HD on FOX SPORTS. All remaining events will be aired live and exclusive on FOX SPORTS, ad-break free and in HD.

FOX SPORTS race coverage will offer fans unprecedented access to the teams and drivers with optional camera angles, audio, and real-time statistics accessible to viewers via the red button functionality. All practice, ARMOR ALL qualifying and ARMOR ALL Top Ten Shootouts will also be LIVE and ad-break free on FOX SPORTS.

V8 Supercars CEO James Warburton said: “This deal provides the foundation for the sport in the future. It was a pivotal plank to get right. We have joined other mainstream sports by having a subscription television offering as well as a Free to Air offering.

“Importantly we have ensured that all of our races are available for free in one hour packages and guarantees our fans have more content than ever.

“In addition we have future-proofed our sport with the Foxtel digital platform and look forward to Foxtel and FOX SPORTS launching their V8 Supercar packages later this year.”

Similar to programs like Match of the Day in the UK, Ten Network will televise feature highlights packages of the FOX SPORTS-only events in prime time, delivering shorter, more action-packed viewing to larger audiences at peak times.

These highlights packages will air on Saturdays at 8.30pm on ONE and 11.30pm on TEN; with Sunday’s full highlights packages at 4pm on TEN, 8.30pm on ONE and 11.30pm on TEN.

“Viewing habits have changed and will continue to evolve. This partnership offers the best of both worlds, enabling people to tailor their viewing as it suits them and their lifestyle,” said Warburton.

TEN will bring back the highly popular RPM. FOX SPORTS will broadcast preview and review shows before and after each event, as well as two dedicated motorsport panel shows each week.

Foxtel CEO and Managing Director Richard Freudenstein said: “Foxtel is delighted be working with V8 Supercars to bring the best of motor sports to the many fans who subscribe or soon will to Foxtel. Such an exhilarating sport deserves the special treatment that only Foxtel and FOX SPORTS can give - comprehensive coverage and with wonderful high definition pictures.

"We look forward to working with James Warburton and the team, delighting and exciting motor sports fans as they never have been before.”

FOX SPORTS CEO Patrick Delany said: “V8 Supercars fans are going to feel the difference in 2015 as we give our coverage the full FOX SPORTS treatment. Each round of the season will have LIVE race coverage on all days, including all practice, qualifying and Championship races, all ad-break free during the action and in High Definition. We’ll fire up the red button to take them closer to the sport than they could ever imagine.”

Ten Network Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Hamish McLennan said: “We are looking forward to welcoming V8 Supercars back to their natural home – on TEN and ONE – in 2015.

“TEN will bring viewers and advertisers the six best races – live and free – plus compelling highlights packages of all the other races. We have worked closely with V8 Supercars to ensure free-to-air television viewers receive comprehensive and engaging coverage on both TEN and ONE.

“Our viewers will get all the live action, thrills, drama and excitement of the Clipsal 500 Adelaide, Townsville 500, Wilson Security Sandown 500, Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, the Gold Coast 600 and the Sydney 500, plus the best of the rest. It will be a compelling offer and we cannot wait to get it on air,” Mr McLennan said.

“With the addition of V8 Supercars to our popular coverage of Formula One and MotoGP, TEN is clearly the home of motorsport in Australia.

“The success of the KFC T20 Big Bash League on TEN and the XXII Olympic Winter Games on TEN and ONE have highlighted the value of premium live sport – and we are excited to add to that with V8 Supercars.”

Initial projections show that on conservative estimates and with prime time promotion on TEN, ONE and FOX SPORTS, V8 Supercars will grow its audience significantly, further adding to the long term strength and well-being of the sport.

“We have a responsibility to the fans to grow our audience which in turn keeps our teams healthy. Without healthy race teams we do not have a sport to deliver or for fans to watch,” said Warburton.

“This model allows passionate fans to watch substantially more V8 Supercars across multiple platforms as they choose while casual viewers have choice in how they watch and when they watch.

“Fans and viewers will also know when races are on with consistent timeslots.”

Foxtel will carry V8 Superview on Foxtel Go on Foxtel Plus 4 with races available as they happen.

V8 Supercars joins the Foxtel Go stable which includes 12 dedicated sports channels and access to the Foxtel stable of movies, documentaries, entertainment, news and content.

Foxtel Go viewers can watch up to 60 live channels plus catch up on a range of shows they may have missed including sport, entertainment, documentary and drama channels and movie channels.

“This is another way for our fans to engage with our great sport whether it be at the beach, in the car or at the backyard barbecue - wherever they happen to be,” Warburton said.

Broadcast quality is optimised to suit compatible devices on 3G, 4G and WiFi, offering the best quality picture available to that service.

This weekend V8 Supercars builds on its successes of 2013 with the most competitive Championship on record, more race winners (17) than ever and a title that went to the wire last December.

The 2014 season commenced with the flagship Clipsal 500 Adelaide where more than 280,000 people were expected to flood Victoria Parklands in Adelaide to start the year and welcome Volvo back to the sport.

Ford, Holden, Nissan, Erebus Motorsport V8 and Volvo make up the grid as Red Bull Racing Australia’s Jamie Whincup aims for a record sixth Championship.

Yeah, it's a huge punch in the face for those not willing to fork out for Foxtel.

I fail to see how a one hour highlights package is something they think people want to see. Warburton's words of "Our fans will enjoy blah blah blah" is such crap, not everyone has or can afford or wants pay TV and yet he's just all "SIx races and highlights packages are better than what you're getting now, what more could you want?!"

Dicks.

Shame really because today's racing was great (well, the second race was, the first was a bit of a parade).

Not going to bother watching this year except Bathurst I think. Just way too bitter about this to enjoy it. Skipped yesterday and felt no great loss :( Sad about the situation though.
Didn't realise until now, but Porsche's 919 (LMP1 car) is being unveiled officially at the Geneva motor show in about 53 hours (at time of posting):

Looking forward to that. Cheers for the info.

Kyle Busch won a rain shortened Nationwide race at Phoenix today. NASCAR can't escape the rain no matter where they go.

It was a boring race anyway, they need to ban Cup drivers from the Nationwide series.

I would like to see that, make it a proper junior series. Also, NASCAR needs more road circuits, less worries with rain then ;)

Nationwide the junior series, and for drivers that get too old or are no longer competitive in the Cup series, they can move onto the Truck series.

I'd watch a lot more of both series.

So V8 Supercars now has an international stream for 40/year, not available to Australian residents :/ Australian residents must have a Foxtel subscription to be able to stream.

Wankers.

Good for international viewers at least.

Only able to catch the very end of the race, still, looking forward to 31 laps is better than nothing :). 'The cars look so much better these days in NASCAR.

Very enjoyable NASCAR race. Phoenix is such a great track.

It's been interesting looking at the comers and goers. Jr. and Penske are both looking pretty comfortable out there. Harvick and Busch bring some serious, and much need firepower to Stewart-Haas. They're going to be a force as well.

It's a bit rubbish that Jr and Harvick can basically not show up until the start of the chase now, though. If it wasn't for sponsorship deals, etc, why would they bother?

Well, one of the rules to get in the chase is that you have to attempt to qualify for all the races to get in. I guess that was put in to keep the drivers that only race the road courses from qualifying. Of course the main reason they still race is for the money.

There is still a slim chance they do not make the chase as well. The top 16 drivers in points that have wins qualify, but since there are 26 races before the chase there could be more than 16 winners.
