What is with the leather jackets on these trips. I'm guessing Trump wouldn't look good in one, I remember Bush wearing one. Did Obama wear those?

Seems like this was inevitable, though. SK was going to get THAAD sooner or later- I believe the first component parts of it were already delivered in March of this year.

This announcement is for the immediate and rapid deployment of THAAD.

China is publicly slamming THAAD deployment but privately they know they have a bad hand to play against it so their response has been fairly limited in raising a shitstorm about it. I think all they've really done is some minor retaliatory trade stuff in a few industries, which considering what they could do overall to SK's economy is rather tame. They might step it up now, but I doubt it. With NK just killing off their ace in the hole I can't imagine the argument in Xi's office was very strong in favor of taking a crap all over SK's economy over this after NK so publicly bitch slapped China so recently.

We tried back in the day, but IIRC NK was throwing people in gulags for having them so our airdropped aid was sitting and rotting in fields because people were too afraid to pick it up for fear of a death worse than starvation.

There are protests on the streets about the THAAD missiles going on right now. This and the ferry disaster.

My DMZ tour was canceled because of VP Pence visit and was reschedule to tomorrow.

Pretty interesting/scary in Seoul right now for a US citizen...

I'm not talking about China retailiating or some shit but if Trump wants a peaceful decision he needs China and parking THAADs on their door step is not the way to get them on board.

And I hope it is. But Russia did have bombers over Japan a few days ago when this was all unfolding. Given the state of the situation right now, I would not be surprised if Russia was indeed making these moves unannounced. After all, it is in their neighborhood.

China just got Donald as in the motherfucker can't be trusted as he changes his stance on a daily basis or worst the administration has no concrete foreign policy and every arm is making its own decisions independent of the other and Trump either doesn't give a shit of the mess it causes it or is ok with it all. It kinda sounds like China's doing the whole "Publicly we denounce this but privately we're behind it" thing.

Who's side is Russia on here? If that report of them moving stuff to the border is true does that mean they're with us, with NK, or just locking down their border against refugees should shit go down?

Ah ok. This is my first time really paying attention to all these current events and shit (was too young/naive to understand what was happening during Bush's foray into the middle east) so I'm still fuzzy on who's friends with who, but it seems that NK doesn't... really have any friends that would back them up? Maybe China but even they seem to be sick of their shit?

On Saturday – according to photographs released by the U.S. Navy – the carrier passed north through the Sunda Strait, the passage between the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Java. It's about 3,500 miles from Korea.

Officials did, however, flatly deny reports that three U.S. carrier strike groups were being directed to mass off the Korean peninsula in a few weeks.

Speculation has been rising that the Ronald Reagan and Nimitz strike groups could join with the Vinson. The Japan-based carrier Reagan, however, is in a maintenance period at Yokosuka scheduled to complete in May.

What an akward morning here in Seoul. I wake up and check the US news to a CNN headline of "Nuclear War May Break Out At Any Moment" and my first thought was "WTF just happened overnight??" because tensions calmed down a little on Sunday and Monday. There were no sirens or evacuation notices and people outside seem normal.

So on my way to work, it is such a huge contrast to that headline. There's people cheering and there's music... for all the presidential campaigns at every major street corner and subway station (there's a new election on May 9th).

Wars are probably their #1 money maker. Natural disasters are ok, but typically don't last very long, and are usually very regional. Politics is a sure fire #2, but nationwide issues don't always crop up (more so lately though, I'm sure they're happy!). Though War.. War never changes (giggle).

I can't imagine how many eyes were glued to the tvs during the 2nd invasion of Iraq.. Driving across all that sand.. The networks probably can't wait to cream themselves over shock and awe part 2.

As long as Pence is here, I'm really not too worried. The US won't attack NK while the Vice President is in harm's way unless NK strikes first, and I don't believe NK will do that because they know it'd be suicide for them. If the US was going to seriously consider a preemptive strike, I think Seoul would get an evacuation notice before they did anything.

That just means the US cannot do a surprise attack. A preemptive strike does not mean surprise, it means attacking before you are struck first.
