NCL suspends image sharing in Swap Note and Flipnote [Spot pass Notes disabled]

I never used SwapNote.

Isn't MiiVerse substantially better?

Swapnote was pretty much its own thing. It is much better than Miiverse in terms of sending messages to your friends. People calling Swapnote "useless" with Miiverse being around baffles me.

Disallow features many people benefit from so they don't have to field complaints. Good ol' Nintendo, always looking out for the people.

Wait... so...

-Swapnote is being disabled because it is hard to moderate/no moderation at all.

-Nintendo have announced that Miiverse will be integrated into 3DS. We all know that Miiverse is heavily moderated.

-People used to say Swapnote will be redundant once Miiverse is implemented.

OH MY GOD.

I am heartbroken.

Man that's disappointing...

Had this one friend who made amazing doodles. Made it worth opening every time.

I would always send out notes for my friends when it was their birthdays. Felt more unique than a boring FB post.

This is my only positive takeaway from the incident :\

hopefully it's coming very, very soon.

Miiverse sucks for messaging your friends. It'd be nice if they make it where you can just hit the home button and send someone a message. By that I mean not having to even go into Miiverse.

Don't kids have Omegle for this?

what is omegle lol

Help, Nintendo.

I just got a Pokemon nicknamed "Gay" while using Wonder Trade. Can you guys disable that next?

So you're saying that you could post nudes as your Steam Avatar and not get banned for it?

Also, you can use adult language in pretty much any multiplayer console game and not get banned for it. But when people start to post offensive images that minors see, that's when Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo's moderators start handing out bans.

Go search through Steam player profiles using any kind of pornerific words you can think of and check out the avatar results.

As for your second paragraph, and I'm willing to believe that you are right on this as I haven't owned a console in more than a decade, but you can seriously type out the word "fuck" in a multiplayer game? I'm sure they cant do anything about what people say over mics, but I would be surprised to find out that there are no filters on what can be typed in a multiplayer game. There are strong filters for what can even be used as a user name.

As far as minors go and what they can see, well they can see avatars on Steam. People can send clickable links to anything on the internet through steam chat that will open up in a browser window in game. You can set up any kind of image as a spray in counter strike and counterstrike Source and spray it on any wall. It's not Valves problem. It's not my problem. It's their parents problem. I dont want to have to deal with text filters or not being able to send links to friends in Steam chat just because some parent out there is using Steam as a babysitter.

Agreed. Sucks that I have to load up the whole stinkin' miiverse just to set up a match or play with friends. They really need someone new in charge of their online strategies.

They already censor Pokémon names, lol. Evidently "Gay" isn't censored. Unless you were making that shit up, and it actually is censored, which would be horrible.

Does Nintendo moderate direct messages sent on Miiverse?

I don't think they moderate DMs. Everything else though, yeah.

That was actually my very first thought when I saw the thread title. The whole feeling oh "Oh my god, Miiverse 3DS is coming!"

I didn't expect the reasons for suspending it to be much much sillier.

I don't think a lot of people in this thread understand what Swapnote was.

Basically, Swapnote was a messaging sharing service where you could draw "notes" and send it to people on your Friends List. You could also attach actual photos and sound clips to your notes. These messages were unmoderated because Swapnote wasn't really a social network as it was more of a direct means of communicating with people on your Friends List.

There were two ways you could send notes:
1. Send it to people via Spotpass. You draw your message, and select what people on your friends list you wanted to send it to. This was how almost every message was sent.
2. Send it to people via Streetpass. If you passed by someone, already on your Friends List, you would exchange notes. Barely anyone used this due to how impractical it was.

Nintendo found out random people were sharing inappropriate photos with minors on their Friends List and shut down the service entirely.

Hope that clears up some of the confusion.

With Miiverse coming onto 3DS at some point, SwapNote loses some of its use.

That and they probably got a slew of messages from new owners about explicit messages and had to cover their ass fast before potential litigation from angry parents. :/

Huh, that surprised me. I figured Valve would disallow anything on your Public profile that could be pornographic.

I was mainly referring to microphone use. Most games have filters in place for their chat systems, but with mics it's practically free reign.

This company will never learn.

Oh, they have learned. They're very sensitive to legal issues after being sued over someone seizing out while playing a Nintendo console while supposedly not knowing it could happen, even though they were the only ones that put seizure warnings in their game manuals since the NES.

It's why the Wii, DS, and later GameCube games had the seizure warning you had to hit a button to get past on them.

Niraj

I shot people I like more for less.
Yeah, it was fun making those, and having everyone talk about what they did with said character. I'm glad you enjoyed them though! :D

I just opened this thread again to post about the same thing. I'm never going to remember them anymore :p

Well there is really nothing they can do to filter what people say on mics. ... for now

And why we're reminded to wear the straps and condoms on our Wiimotes.

And why we're reminded to take breaks every 30 minutes.

etc.

Noooo. I loved SwapNote. I actually used it to keep in contact with a good friend of mine who basically lives on the other side of the world now. Sure, I can still contact him over the internet, but sending him my doodles was lovely. Fucking hell Nintendo. ;_;

Well cant you do that over facebook by simply drawing on paint, then sending the image either by email or what ever?

Also, Steam moderates profile pics and such. Whoever says they can post ball pics is full of it:

Steam said:
You may upload any image as long as it is not offensive, vulgar, or specifically prohibited in the Steam Online Conduct rules. Your avatar may be removed and you may be banned from the Steam Community if your avatar is inappropriate.

Alright, shut this down, give people yet another reason to spend more time on their smartphones and tablets as opposed to their 3DSs. There's no messaging system on the 3DS now, is there?

Brilliant.

Every time I open the System Stuff folder on my 3DS, I'm going to look at the Swap Note icon and sigh, I just know it.
