NCL suspends image sharing in Swap Note and Flipnote [Spot pass Notes disabled]

Yep, we ain't getting proper online systems from Nintendo anytime soon with this ridiculous behaviour. Next up: WiiU video chat. I mean, you can add literally anyone in Miiverse and use that feature TOO DANGEROUS MAN;

I guess that means 3DS Miiverse at least will be fullflegded instead of just replicating the browser version? I mean, otherwise they just killed the only communication feature of the system. Christ...

Do you know how many friends on my 3DS I know in person?
Around 60 or so.

You aren't everybody. I used to love looking at Swapnote periodically and downloading the cool images my friends would draw. They were extremely talented and it was awesome to look at. Sometimes they'd share stories they had in Animal Crossing. It was a really fun and cute way to communicate. Very disappointed in this move.

Did I say I am everybody? I assumed I wouldn't have to add an IMO/only my experience/... after every post on a forum like NeoGAF. I'll make an exception just for you:

Do you know how many friends on my 3DS I know in person? One

The rest are strangers I've never seen before. About 30 from GAF Pokemon friend safari and about the same number from random battles in the new Pokemon (battle someone twice and you have the option to add him to your friend list). Hello swapnote porn from/to strangers.

I bet after Pokemon the number of complaints about the issue will have skyrocketed since you now have a huge number of people who don't know each other on their friend list and people ARE stupid enough to share their porn with everyone on their friendlist.

Obviously that's just my experiences/assumptions/opinion bla bla bla

Happy? Now get off my back.

Yeah, how dare people be angry about a company shutting down the only means of communication their console has?

You're part of GAF too. Don't you think you're better than the rest.

There's a difference between being angry about shutting down a message service (which I am) vs. suddenly making slippery slope arguments (them).

Also what is generalization. Yes there will be outliers but generalization implies the more outspoken people. And you can tell a lot of those people riding the slippery slope slide are aplentiful.

so weird, why shut down the service when you can just patch a warning about 'beware of penises'?

And while swap note was fun for a bit, its super sluggish performance keeps me from keep using it. Why does it take soo long to load up new ones?

Just sent an email to NOA's support. I know it's not gonna change anything, but I don't care. I'm so disappointed.

My gf and I used to surprise each other with notes whenever we couldn't see each other and seeing that blue light and knowing it was her really brightened my day :( this sucks. I'm the biggest Nintendo fan around here and I've even defended the eShop system on occasion but this is just unacceptable.

Shutting down a service entirely when they could've added a toggle in system settings, not letting consumers know about it beforehand. WTF.

WTF Nintendo.

Gosh.

I thought all the crazy kids were using Snapchat nowadays anyway.

This seems a bit heavy-handed, but that's their way I guess.
I had to google that; I must be getting old. But holy fuck the start-up is apparently valued at $4B.

On-topic, I don't see why they don't just implement age-restrictions. Perhaps they are behind the scenes.

I don't envy Nintendo; they're in a really weird spot, with both "grown-up" kids and actual kids playing in the same space, and trying to maintain a good environment for the latter. Real adults get caught in the crossfire.

BTW, cross-system/username-based account systems don't solve the problem. Banning for offensive Swapnotes is already perfectly technically possible—it may not have been implemented, but an account system is not a prerequisite.

I usually look forward to the stuff that my friends send over, whether from AC or Pokemon snapshots. This is just going backwards. Way to go Nintendo.

wow that sucks, my kids are seriously bummed they used that swap note app to basically text/talk with their friends in the neighborhood.

Well, this is really damn disappointing and stupid. I was actually expecting a Swapnote this morning and got that message :\

I don't even use swapnote, but this seems like an incredibly bad decision. People are already skeptical of Nintendo when it comes to online functionality, this is a bit like violating probation.

We need a campaign or something. Sending them pics of Swap Notes that will now never be sent... or posting them online somewhere for everyone to see, despite their efforts.

This is really, really shitty. I'm sure everyone had an awesome Swap Note person in their group of friends.

This really sucks. I didn't use Swap Note a lot after it first came out but I liked seeing different status updates from people on my friends list that I didn't get to play with a lot or even ever. I liked sending pictures to each other of snow during winter, showing off what each others area looked like. I liked the updates from Nintendo and seeing the drawings Nikki did. It was the only method, half ass it may have been, of communicating with others on the system.

There are going to be people that abuse all communication methods. It wasn't well done in the first place and that is why people took to using message boards to trade friend codes. The environment is different outside of Japan where you are more likely to run into another person with a system then without. Nintendo needs to get that through their heads. To extend this to Flipnote as well. Why would anyone buy that now?

Still able to (re)download the app in the UK at least.

I hope so, but I doubt it...

Why not just ban individual 3DSs from the server? Why ruin everything for everyone? :(

If I was banned because I sent a dick pic I would be pretty pissed. We all need to be reminded that we can only send stuff to people who have added us. This is the very purpose of the friend codes existence: people having me as a friend know me and know what to expect. If one dislike my messages they can just remove me from their friend list and I won't be able to send them anything.

This is clearly not a case of harassement, as it could be dealt with very simply with the friend codes. No, this is a case of Nintendo stepping in personal correspondence, where people (minors or not, it doesn't matter) enjoy sending and receiving stuff. Nintendo doesn't like what is being exchanged, so Nintendo shut off the service (or ban people, same thing) regardless of the obvious agreement between the two parties.

There are parental restrictions that can be activated on the console, parents should monitor the online activity of their kids regardless, kids should be taught not to add friend codes from the internet or face the dicks consequences. If anything another friend code system could be devised, where codes exchanged over the internet have limited communication capabilities in contrast to code exchanged over local wireless having full communication capabilities.

But switching off the service because people sent stuff Nintendo doesn't like? This is clear admission that Nintendo has been reading personal correspondence under the greatest guise of "protecting the children". I don't like it one bit.

Nicely articulated. It amazes me that Nintendo have made such a backwards step as to completely innihilate any justification for their [convoluted] friend system they've tried to convey in the past. Inane.

Horrible news and a terrible decision by Nintendo. One of the biggest reasons that I bought my son a 3DS for his birthday last month was so that I could send him swapnotes while he was at his mom's house. I guess we can still exchange via streetpass but what's the point in that? Fucking ninty.

It's pretty obvious that Nintendo (NCL in particular) just make snap judgements and do not think things through.

Are you certain? It seems equally plausible to me that parents have been complaining and Nintendo has been investigating. The fact that this came about shortly after Pokémon's release, itself plausibly the cause of the upsurge in friending, lends credence to this IMO.

but there are parental controls.its not nintendo's responsibility that your kid is chatting up with strangers on 4chan eager to send dick pics.
Yes, there are effective parental controls. But there are also an army of ill-informed parents who just see themselves as giving their kids toys. Facing down that angry mob, if I was Nintendo saying "b-but you didn't turn on the parental controls", I'd get destroyed.

But why wouldn't Nintendo say "We provide perfectly thorough parental controls on this machine for you to sort this out yourselves. Your child's interactions with strangers on the Internet are beyond our control." Rather than dick over absolutely everyone who uses the service?

Why would you get destroyed? The net is a big, potentially dangerous, thing, that exists everywhere and parents need to be aware of it. Same argument for/against IAPs on iPads that I'm always seeing in the news. People need to sort their shit out.

See my post above. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=88267691&postcount=393

I'm not saying it's a good excuse—parental controls are the correct answer—but when your most important customer base wants to crucify you, well…

"The customer is always right."

Couldn't they have waited until Miiverse is implemented on the 3DS? This is just a bad decision. What's wrong with installing parental controls?

I think we should all start a Hashtag on Twitter for this.

Demanding information on Miiverse 3DS, because Nintendo needs to see there's a mass of disappointed people..
