Welp, I haven't listened to all the albums I've wanted to this year, but I guess I oughta just make my list anyway.
1) Doppelgangaz - Lone Sharks (4)
I feel like this is the most straight forward hip-hop release of the year. In a year of releases with artists with big ol huge egos, and albums with high fallutin concepts and all that, this was the best album that didn't try to be anything more than dope music. Two dudes from NY just dropped this shit, no hype, no need to do anything but just sit back and let this shit play. Its hip-hop just the way I like it; a little dark, introspective, self-aware, with a good measure of jazz thrown in.
2) Danny Brown - XXX
Honestly it was hard for me to choose between this and Lone Sharks for AOTY. The only thing that puts Lone Sharks above is that its way easier to listen to. XXX has a few tracks I skip damn near everytime I listen to it. Still, theres absolutely no denying that this is a fucking amazing album. Not only can Danny Brown rap his ass off, but he does it over some of the sickest beats. I love artists that try something new, try to approach hip-hop in a new way, or direction, or whatever you want to call it. Yeah, some may hate on the high-pitched voice but fuck 'em.
3) Curren$y - Covert Coup
Mo dope shit from Curren$y. Not much more I can say. Except that Alch shows that he deserves to be in everybody's top 10 best producers DoA.
4) Cunnilynguists - Oneirology
So I was just raggin on concept albums, but theres no hating on this shit. Kno once again bodies 99% of the hip-hop production community. I have no idea what shit this dude is one, but everyone needs a sample of it. Kno is a fucking wizard. The fact that the Cunnilynguists crew and those they choose to associate with are all dope MCs helps too.
5) The Roots - Undun
6) AsapRocky - LiveLoveA$ap
7) Kendrick Lamar - Section80
8) Shabazz Palaces - BlackUp
S'not like this bullshit matters anyway.
