Welp, I haven't listened to all the albums I've wanted to this year, but I guess I oughta just make my list anyway.
S'not like this bullshit matters anyway.

1) Doppelgangaz - Lone Sharks (4)
The+Doppelgangaz+_+Lone+Sharks+%282011%29-HT.jpg

I feel like this is the most straight forward hip-hop release of the year. In a year of releases with artists with big ol huge egos, and albums with high fallutin concepts and all that, this was the best album that didn't try to be anything more than dope music. Two dudes from NY just dropped this shit, no hype, no need to do anything but just sit back and let this shit play. Its hip-hop just the way I like it; a little dark, introspective, self-aware, with a good measure of jazz thrown in.

2) Danny Brown - XXX
Danny-Brown-XXX-300x300.jpg

Honestly it was hard for me to choose between this and Lone Sharks for AOTY. The only thing that puts Lone Sharks above is that its way easier to listen to. XXX has a few tracks I skip damn near everytime I listen to it. Still, theres absolutely no denying that this is a fucking amazing album. Not only can Danny Brown rap his ass off, but he does it over some of the sickest beats. I love artists that try something new, try to approach hip-hop in a new way, or direction, or whatever you want to call it. Yeah, some may hate on the high-pitched voice but fuck 'em.

3) Curren$y - Covert Coup
covert-coup-coverjpgw468h450_jpg_300x300_crop-smart_q85.jpg

Mo dope shit from Curren$y. Not much more I can say. Except that Alch shows that he deserves to be in everybody's top 10 best producers DoA.

4) Cunnilynguists - Oneirology
3345141714-1.jpg

So I was just raggin on concept albums, but theres no hating on this shit. Kno once again bodies 99% of the hip-hop production community. I have no idea what shit this dude is one, but everyone needs a sample of it. Kno is a fucking wizard. The fact that the Cunnilynguists crew and those they choose to associate with are all dope MCs helps too.

5) The Roots - Undun
6) AsapRocky - LiveLoveA$ap
7) Kendrick Lamar - Section80
8) Shabazz Palaces - BlackUp

I was gonna wait till I had write ups of why for each but I never got the time so I'm dropping this one raw. undun had the T&A spot but I decided it'd get enough love elsewhere, and I wasn't willing to bump off Give The Drummer Some either because it's definitely underrated so I just replaced The Roots with T&A.

No Coss huh... Btw I really like this list, if only cus I think our tastes are so divergent that there are a few gems I haven't even heard of to put in my "to listen" pile

The Christian themes of Instrument of Emotion really became too much for me to handle as an atheist, and I wish that weren't the case. I think half of Section 80 is amazing, but I didn't want to add in half albums otherwise The Illz would be number one.

GTFO.

I just realized how many R&B picks adversesolutions has, Terrius Nash, The Weeknd, Beyonce, etc. It's laughable. If I were doing the awards, I woudn't even count two of his five top picks.

I tried to tackled this The Weeknd thing earlier in the thread. People are confused about what genre it is?
How is it anything but R&B?
But if people want to throw it in their top 10 hip-hop lists, go for it.

HiResDes

Member
It's even funnier to come into the thread and decide that only one album is worthy of being picked (ridiculous in of itself) and then pick a R&B album.

Lemme guess, a bunch of soul loops with the same drums on every track? Nah

Think whatever you will but don't fault it till you give it a spin, it's fucking good.

So is Statik Selektah's Population Control, one of the few albums I can honestly say I wouldn't mind listening too without skipping a song that released this year.

Can’t slow down, too much evil in my rear view
Sometimes you wanna scream to God, but he can’t hear you
And even if you did, this’ll probably be his answer
Fuck you ‘plainin’ ’bout? It ain’t like you got cancer

Personal:

Rookie of the Year: Lady Essence, give her a listen.
Man of the Year: Kanye West
Best Verse: People Under The Stairs - Electric Tookie; first verse (Thes One). The runner up would be Double K's verse. Both are just right on, and go with the beat perfectly. Their flow is insane, and both verses have some really clever lines. Listen!
Thes One said:
You could stop thinking "Keep It Simple, Stupid."
The chubby one brought some shit you love. Cupid.
You like how I did that little pause? ([Double K:] Pause.)
This ain’t a game, I came to reboot, the mainframe computer.
Coming on the servers like Hooters, take my order.
Recorders rejoice for my voice and call Reuters and the AP,
I maybe liquored, tipsy for your taste,
The temper kneel to the face and makes my brain baste
And kinda soaked and kinda yoked like Tookie in the Eighties,
Around the same time I played hooky with the ladies
At pet park, got my first feel-up in the Skylark
I guess it’s neither here-nor-there like hip hop, a dying art
Shot through the heart, now all a-y’all to blame,
You’re probably downloading while I’m writing my refrain.
You beat me to the punch like Don Flamenco,
You found rap’s Ringo, hey, here’s a hot single and a cookie,
Now, speaking of Tookie, the beat’s electric.
The P’s a gang who came to straight party, not set trip
Not Cedric, not Sinbad, but it’s a different world
All you with me, Whitely? We drop the beat and rock the girls.

I know I only occasionally post in the GAF-HOP threads, and when I do I sound like an idiot who has no idea what he's talking about (mostly true), but you guys have shown me so much great music that I would have never ever found on my own, and I can't thank you all enough for that. This community is awesome.
