Congratulations! Welcome to the club!
Great selection of games you got there.
Show pics! Dat game porn.

You know how to give the games a proper cleaning? I haven't had any old games I haven't been able to get working w/ a little Isopropyl Alchohol and a cotton swab.

I dip one end in the alcohol.. If it's really wet, I dab it on my jeans.. then I rub it horizontally on front and back of pins. Then do a a sort of vibrating vertical rub across the front and back, by shaking the cartridge while moving it left and right and pressing the swab in place. Then I switch to the dry swab which has more texture, to really get any dirt, repeating that cleaning technique. If it's filthy, you might need a second or even third swab.

And yeah, half of the problem could be the system's pin connector, so maybe try giving that a decent cleaning but you'll have to crack the system open to get to it.

Have fun, and don't spend too much money! Hit the flea markets and pawn shops to round up the common titles you want in your collection.. I don't think you ought to pay more than 4 or 5 dollars per game for the common stuff. I feel good at 2 bucks a game, 3 is alright, 4 is good if the games are worth it. Try trading here and on other forums with other enthusiasts. I don't mind picking up games I already have if I feel it's a great deal.. Those can be handy for trades with fellow collectors.

Actually, since I need to cut my game spending (been going a little crazy while off work for the month) I'm assembling a huge list of all my duplicate games on various classic platforms. Definitely take a look. I only have about 6 NES duplicates, as my NES collection is still fresh, but take a look anyway. I'll post here when I have it all together.

Have fun!

Hey thanks for the advice on cleaning. I would show pictures, but when i click that icon to insert images it wants me to use a URL. Not really sure how to do that of a pic on my computer. I would like to post pictures of my NES and SNES games.

Welcome to the NES Club! That library is a great start. Varied list of games, hours of fun already. Envious of your MM2; that game by itself commands a high price, and I've not seen it locally of late.

I'm thinking of getting a top-loader myself. I just got a side-loader with a new 72-pin, which is working better than my previous unit, but top-loaders work so consistently well. My only gripe is the transparent vertical lines that show up when playing games on it. Not a dealbreaker, but side-loader is more "pure", IMO.

I love playing Mega Man 2! First time ever playing it was yesterday. I found it at local used store for 17.95. I love the wood man stage music and bubble man music as well. I ordered a new 72 pin as well. Hopefully it will improve the front loader's reliability.

I haven't posted in this thread yet. I didn't feel like I had enough games or something, but I recently purchased 5 more so that puts my total up to a respectable 49.

ROkGayT.jpg

All the games are in box protectors which is why they... look like they're in plastic. The Famicom games that got the worst of the flash glare are the Japanese only Final Fantasy games and Fire Emblem Games. The box for Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt is obviously a fake since that game never got a box. All other boxes are legit. That's SMB2 for the Disk System in there taking up an awkward gap.

Couple more Turtles games down here. No box protector on Turtles III because I'm not happy with the condition of the box. I've been trying to replace it but that game's sooo expensive.

All games have manuals. All games that came with maps have maps. I even have the mail away map for Dragon Warrior II. Punch-Out!! has the letter from Mike Tyson. StarTropics has the dippable letter (undipped!).

I think that's everything.

Whenever I want to upload a picture here, I first upload the image onto a free image upload site. Recently I've been recommended imgur.com. You don't have to sign up.. You can just upload from your computer, then copy the BBcode into the forum here.
It's also a good idea to put it in quote tags, that way the pic will be small until clicked on.

Lovely! I'd be interested in taking that TMNT 3 off your hands if you ever want it replaced then. It's a game I owned as a kid but foolishly sold off. It's one I intend to put back into my collection, and unless the box is absolutely demolished, I think I'd be okay with it.

Shit, I still need to get Shatterhand. And SCAT. *sob*

Natsume is such a good label to look out for. You know someone is doing something right when they name their game SCAT and the only thing that comes to mind is a great game and not a questionable sexual fetish.

Natsume on SNES is even worse

Pocky and Rocky, Pocky and Rocky 2, Wild Guns, Harvest Moon, Casper, Ninja Warriors... you're probably looking at $650 for that lot. So at least games like Shadow of the Ninja and Shatterhand are relatively cheap, lol

I'm kind of getting tempted to sell my NES collection. I have about 150 games or so. They hold a lot of nostalgia to me but at the same time, they are just sitting in boxes. Part of me thinks I should just sell them to people that would actively appreciate them.

Maybe I'll post a list sometime and see if there's any interest.

It's not even that bad. I'm just... particular (see: I hate myself). One of the uh... I don't know what they're called. The tabs? The little flaps off on either side when you open the box -- one of those is ripped off and missing. That's the main damage.

I probably won't try to replace the game until late August but if I do I'll hit you up and see if you're still interested in the copy I have now.

Real talk: I don't think I've ever seen a NES box in my life.

Godspeed boxed collectors.

It's rare to find out there these days. Local place got these a few days ago:

They used to price boxed stuff same as cart only (which they sell at a bit below eBay prices). They got tired of other local shops coming in and buying up their good stuff to sell themselves, so unfortunately they raised their prices on the better known stuff.

HaL64 traded in a bunch of his doubles and took home most of them. They are in pretty great shape. His picture of Dragon Warrior:

I'd really think twice about just selling so many games. If you're at the point that you really don't see the value in it anymore, then it's probably best to sell it though. I sold my NES games as a kid once and always regretted it, so even if you think they're just gathering dust now, try and look into the future and imagine f you'd want to keep them for future use, like for when you have kids or something.

That said, I'm always looking to expand my NES collection, and I know I'm not the only one here, so if you do end up selling them, I'm sure you'll be able to get rid of them easily enough.

Yeah, I had a huge NES collection back in high school and sold it. My greatest regret. I'd just throw them all into some plastic containers and store them some place safe. In 5 years or so you'll want them again.

I'm already interested. I'm not one of those guys that needs all the games in the box. But there are some specific ones, mostly the ones I owned as a kid, that I'd really really like to have in the box.. and if that's what you're saying you have.. Hot dog. Well you know we're interested.

Yeah, man, just let me know.

edit:

Say friends, I've posted a huge list of Famicom, Super Famicom, N64, etc games that I'm looking to trade for stuff I don't have.
Check out all the details in the Buy/Sell/Trade thread!

I'd be interested. There's some holes in my collection that I'd like to fill.

Just realized I don't own a copy of Ninja Gaiden somehow so I went on to buy one, ready to spend way too much. It was only $10...? Super weird.

I also scooped up a copy of TMNT II: The Arcade Game because I never owned that either.

Kinda can't wait to play them.

If you continue to only buy NES games with "Ninja" in the title, you'll still do pretty good.

Haha well, I own most of the stuff I truly love already. I wish I owned all the Mega Man carts but eh, I can live without those based on prices. I have all the Castlevanias, Marios, River City Ransom, (now) Ninja Gaiden and Turtle games.

A little off topic, but I'm gonna try and see if I can get good enough at levels 5 and 6 in Castlevania to attempt and record a no-death run. I can get to 5 no problem, but then I start to play sloppy. I'll have to shore up my inputs to pull it off, but I think I can do it.

All Ninja Gaiden games are cheap for some reason (except PC engine). Not jinxing it.

What was the difference between the famicom 3 and the nes release agian?

Limited number of continues in the US version. I've seen people bitch about that making it impossible but it's totally doable. IIRC, you get 5.

Wait. The Japanese versions have unlimited continues? That's an odd change. Who the fuck played Ninja Gaiden and thought "this should be harder"?

Unlike in the west, in Japan you can't rent games. During this period, publishers would sometimes make the western versions of games harder with the intention of increasing longevity and bolstering sales versus rentals.

Nice. What's your technique?

Wipe down with cotton balls and 70% alcohol to remove the initial layer of grumph and loosen things....then I use one of those white hard rubber art erasers and lots of elbow grease. Blow off the debris and then another alcohol wipe down.

Try to avoid the 70%, there's too much water in there. You can get 99.9% at an electronics store.

That said, thanks, I'm going to have to grab some of those art erasers, I've got a few games where the alcohol wasn't fixing much.

Yeah I just have this handy and figured I would finish it off...been milking the canister for well over a year. I don't use much.

Alcohol alone is not enough. The erasers are fantastic.

This is the type you want...

You can't rent video games in Japan? I never knew that. Crazy. Is there a reason why, or it's just simply not a thing there?

Speaking of cleaning carts...

This is the Mega Man 2 I got over the weekend that needed some major scrubbage.

Before and After:

Thing runs like a champ. :)

Wow. Thanks for showing the before and after. I just ordered some security screwdriver bits, so i can do some major cleaning. Question: does it help to clean the cartridge slot in the SNES?

Screwbit works on the SNES carts but I have no experience with the system slot itself. Always seemed more resilient compared to the cheesy toaster NES slot however and I have never had a problem with one.

I've cleaned my entire 90+ NES cart collection over the past year though with some great results.

Specifically, you'll need a 3.8mm game bit to open SNES carts, Game Boy / Game Boy Color carts, and later NES carts. The larger 4.5mm game bit one will open SNES, N64, and Gamecube consoles as well as Genesis and Game Gear carts.

Was able to get up to Level 6 in Castlevania without dying yesterday. Then, after the part with all the giant bats, I walked in the door and strode right off the ledge.

God. Damn. Me.

Either way, Dracula whooped my ass until I remembered his pattern. All of that said, I think a no-death run is possible for me.

NGIII certainly isn't, but I luckily got mine for like $15 three or four years ago. That said, it handles so much more poorly than the previous two and the limited continues make it stupidly hard to beat.

Hey, here's a generic topic that's probably already been discussed to death. I've been on a kick on tracking down highly regarded controllers for each of my systems. Currently I'm using a dogbone. Anything out there that's interesting for the NES I should consider?

The Sansui joycard is a really nice NES controller. It's modeled after famicom style controllers so it's more comfortable to hold than regular NES pads and it has optional headphone support.

NES Advantage and NES Max. The Max is my favorite controller but I found it very hard to find. I'm actually on the same one I got at the time and I never found another one.

Was that NEX arcade stick any good? I remember those accessories showing up with that Messiah clone system at game stores in the mid-aughts.

I really, really had a tough time with the slider thing in the place of the d-pad. I liked the ergonomics of it, though.

Whelp... I'll be picking up one of these guys. Yeesh. What a difference!

I've seen people crack up their cases to do the cleaning, but why is this necessary?
Is it because you can't fit an eraser onto the pins without opening it?

Played 2 really obscure NES games yesterday and was wondering if anyone was familiar with them... I'm pretty familiar with the NES library but these were new, even to me.

Arkista's Ring - At first glance, looks like a Zelda clone but actually plays much more arcadey - much more linear, with much smaller areas where you have to kill a bunch of enemies to get a key to proceed. There are a few powerups but it feels really dated for the time (1990), closer to Namco's "Legend of Valkyrie" than Zelda.

Pinball Quest - Pinball... with an RPG mode. Think about that one for a second. You earn points that you can use to trade for stuff like bigger flippers and stoppers, and can also power up your ball to defeat enemies. Unique as all hell, and I'm surprised I have never heard of it before.
