New Langrisser game announced in Famitsu magazine (3DS, Summer 2015)

Wow lots of pessimism in this thread. This is a new 3ds jrpg so this definitly has me at least intrigued. If this had been a new ip from these exact people I'm positive most of you would've way more hype, but because it's from an establish franchised suddenly it's not worth a damn?

Pretty much. It's a lazy cash grab with no reputable names involved. If they called it a new IP, no one would be bothered. (Or would bother.)

Correct. They went from making Langrisser at Masaya to making Growlanser as Career Soft, and then they were absorbed into Atlus proper and went on to make the Devil Survivor games. Shinjiro Takata remains the director and head of the production unit to this day.

That's funny Devil Survivor is one of my favorite SMT games and I had no idea. I've always liked the art in Langrisser/Growlanser and even bought a few art books because of that. I also really liked Growlanser 2 and 4 was decent. Haven't played the others.

I wonder why they couldn't get Satoshi Urushihara for this one.

Looks really generic.
Half of the charm and atmosphere of the Langrisser games came from Urushihara's stylish, ridiculous (in a good way) art that really gave off a sense of a unique fantasy world.

If the gameplay stays the same as before (meaning amazing) this could turn out OK, but I won't get my hopes up.

Yes, that falls under the same criticism. Thus me using Growlanser as an example, because it's Urushihara subsequent works where he's got a better sense of such things.

Games, they take time.

It doesn't take three years to make 3DS games unless you're Sakurai and I very much doubt this game(and Stella Glow) have had even two years of development.

I love Urushihara's art that said I never played any of these games as I never had a Genesis/Mega Drive of my own. Is it like Shining Force?

I am on my phone currently and looking up stuff is kind of a pain.

Exactly. Langrisser has an awesome history and pedigree, I just feel like this will be a Suiko Tierkreis/PSP situation where it may be a fine game on it's own merit, but can't live up to the series name with a modern style change. I will definitely be waiting to hold any real judgement until it is available but I will be very surprised if it can hold a candle to the previous games or feel like Langrisser without Urushihara.

Here's a great article that should fill you up on all you need to know about the games.

2 (the SNES version called Der Langrisser to be exact) and 4 are probably my favorites, and there are fan translations available for them online.

No Urushihara is bullshit :( Best character designer ever

Hopefully this is at least decent... Man I just want a new actual Career Soft game. It's probably for the best that Urushihara doesn't have anything to do with this

No Urushihara sucks but I can easily overlook that if the gameplay is good and they use the 16bit battle system, plus it gets localised in English ofc.

With no 3DS Advanced Wars this is a great opportunity to gain a ton of new fans world wide and let the series claim it's rightful place in the pantheon of SRPGs.

Emulation is very easy and the only way to play most of them in English, Warsong and Der Langrisser (in that order) are the best.

I'm willing to give this a shot, but I doubt it'll get localized unless it just happens to be a really dead period for Atlus or XSeed.

It'll be neat to see how closely they hew to the original games.

What a pleasant surprise. That´s really an announcement I´ve been waiting for a while now after the success of Fire Emblem. Despite no Uruchihara art direction which was one of the most appealing aspects to me and other odd decisions like the 3D battle models, I´ll defintely give it the benefit of the doubt and a fair chance, even though a localization isn´t too likely. The battlefield seems quite nice so far.

It´s also really getting a bit silly that many devs can´t refrain from using chibi-fied designs when it comes to the 3DS. Be it MH or even more child friendly Anime-esque designs like in Youkai Watch show that a bit more realistic proportions don´t hurt sales. An option to turn off the battle sequences would be nice.

Sounds like they're slapping the name onto an otherwise unrelated game for attention. Meh, at least we'll get fan translations of Langrisser games in the future, since we're essentially stuck with pre-millennium titles.

I was mostly upset by how awful the armor is and used the word slut without thinking really. I'm used to skimpy armor, believe me. This one that I saw, though, is probably the worst designed I have ever seen. I'm saying this as someone that refuses to play anyone but the Amazon in Dragon's Crown.

Unfortunately I can't find my Venus artbook now but yeah as yeah so am I. I don't really shy back from games that features smut or condone anyone that likes it. I was mostly just trying to ask you not to say slut as *I* find it a derogatory term. Then again some find it empowering so more power to them :)

Anyway, you be even more off topic. Anyone has anything to say about SCD Saturn games? Never did play them :/

It certainly is...Well i'll probably buy it depending on the gameplay.

Don't really like the new artwork, but otherwise it looks pretty decent IMO.

Remember the last Langrisser game that went without Urushihara and a bunch of NCS people, and it ended up playing out like a crappy version of Dragon Force?

No one wants that again.
Hey I actually enjoyed Langrisser Millennium. :p

Eh the chibi-fied designs have nothing to do with 3DS. All the units are in chibi form on the map and during battles in the previous games. Also, it's Urushihara. :p

Langrissers battle character designs where similar to previous FE characters in battle scenes (for example in the GBA ones or the character sprites in Awakening on the map), while they look more deformed compared to FE I mean the big difference between the super deformed blob heads that are seen in the scans compared to the already mentioned designs in previous games.

I'll do a (confusing?) general breakdown of the system.
(Note there might be errors since I haven't played the games in like 10 years due to new games & backlog)

Common across all 5 games: Each of your characters can have up to 6/8 Troops (which consist of 10 man (1 HP each) each) accompany them.
Each character has a Command Range in which their troops gain AT/DEF Boni and if a troop stands at the beginning of a new turn next to their general they will be healed for 3 HP.
Each character starts in a predetermined class, hitting level 10 they can choose between two promotion classes which can be promoted again at level 10 - in special cases these 2nd promotions can be promoted again.

Langrisser 1 & 2 (mega drive, snes, pc-engine, pce-fx, saturn, ps1)
: Phasebased, charactersized tiles, like the Fire Emblem still are today.
Lang 2 offers a multipath scenario, meaning at certain points you can switch sides from light to imperial to choas to genocidal/freedom.

Langrisser 3 (Saturn, Ps2 with "censored" artwork): sort of Phasebased, but you do not move your troops individualy, instead you choose a formation (straight line, diagonal, etc), move your general - while the enemies plans their movement- and at the end of the planning phase all troops move automaticaly to their new position around their general - depending on their speed this can mean that your horsemen stand next to an enemys pikemen during the battlephase because the soldiers of your other general nearby were too slow to occupy that particular tile.
First game whith a "romancesystem" - each of your dialogchoices during a scenario raises/lowers affection with one/some of the girls.
If you manage to woe that st*** princess you can a slightly different endscenario. (she always suicided in my playthroughs -_-)
Most people dont like L3; I like the idea of trying to simulate a dynamic war and the comfort not to move all troops individualy; imo it's not a bad game, jsut different.

Langrisser 4&5 (Saturn, Ps1): Games are now speed-based and have smaller tiles allowing for halfsteps (4 minitiles make one standardtile, L5 and Final Edition only) allowing for more hexlike attack&movement pattern.
This speedmovement also resulted in L4 in troops that are slower than their general and lag behind (or was it the other way around, aaah) - though I do remember having that problem in L5 too.
The Final Edition L4 uses L5s system.
Spells now take time to cast.
Romance.
L4 has again multipath scenarios (not as extensive as in L2).
Remove the visible tiles and troops, add delaytime towards every action and you got Growlanser.

I'd say it's most similar to Yggdra Union. You move individual units, then squads fight in battle. The original on Genesis/MD was fantastic(localized as 'Warsong').

I got my hopes up when I saw "new Langrisser," but ehhhhhhhh this doesn't look right, and with none of the key people being involved, I don't know.

It's tricky one but it's less of a departure than Kid Icarus Uprising so it might be worth keeping an open mind.

I'm sorry to pile on, but it's telling how you associate something awful with the word "slut", because of course when a girl enjoys something that predates human existence, it's bad.

I'm definitely not a fan of bikini armor either, but still dude.

Ah okay, I played Yggdra Union, that makes sense.

I'm saying that I don't care if females are wearing skimpy outfits.

I play lots of games that have them and don't really mind. I don't think a woman is a slut for wearing a skimpy outfit. I just thought this particular design was awful. As in the worst design armor I have seen in a long, long time. Maybe even the worst bikini armor I can remember.

I'm still willing to give it a shot as the core gameplay still seems to be there.

Fire Emblem survived Kaga leaving and art shouldn't be the key to a strategy rpg.

The new art isn't bad but it's pretty generic which is what you don't want for a series like Langrisser. It had Urushihara for so many of the games. Even the shitty Langrisser Milennium managed to get the art right by getting Kaishaku to do it, giving it a unique look, even if the game couldn't emulate it, lol.

I guess the shocking discomfort and trepidation will pretty much always be there for these next few years for those of us that have been gaming for awhile now---a new entry in a classic franchise, but missing key original folks due to death or otherwise.

Maybe the "new team", emphasis stressed on if this is actually something they are trying to make a proper serious go of versus just a hit and run on the tming, can wrangle together enough good twists to make it their own in a sense....but time'll tell as that's looking like a tall order indeed at this rate.

I don't even really care about the art. But the rest of the staff doesn't seem to be involved, either.

I can't seem to see any of the new art even when clicking the article :-\

But yeah, no Urushihara? People calling him generic are unaware that this is his original style which simply inspired a shitton of successors.

Here's a summary of the Extreme interview with CEO Soshi Saito and director/lead planner Shohei Sato:

-Extreme owns the entire Masaya catalogue and is looking into rereleases for PSN and VC

-Before settling on Langrisser, they also thought about bringing back Cho Aniki or Schbibiman (Shockman)

-They're primarily interested in making games for dedicated gaming hardware rather than smartphones, and they want to partner with developers who match their passion

-They felt that it'd be wrong to just imitate the old games so they're going for a different look with some new game systems. Urushihara was considered but they ultimately went with someone else for the sake of doing something new.

I'm with the crowd that says this looks like Langrisser in name only. If it turns out well that's great but I'm not getting my hopes up.

These games are so embarassing. I really want to play them for the gameplay, but costume design and "Nicha~n" in 4 were really off putting for me.

IV is actually really good. I consider it the best in the series for both gameplay and story. But yeah, Rachel ("Nicha~n") is pretty cringeworthy.

I was going to say, didn't Masaya cease to exist back in 1999-2000? So yeah, this is some other studio that bought up the rights to their games? Huh. But why make a Langrisser game without Satoshi Urushihara artwork? That makes no sense... (other than that I'm guessing this other guy probably costs them less?) and the game sounds extremely generic, too. Not great. The Langrisser and Growlanser serieses are fantastic, though, so I hope it's better than it sounds.

The art looks pretty generic, but otherwise it looks promising tbh. No Urushihara is a letdown, but seeing how busy he is drawing artworks for loli and porn magazines, it's no surprise. I'll stay optimistic until a gameplay trailer hits and then we'll see.
