Where's the cheapest part of NYC to live in? I'm wanting to work there after my master's program in a few years.

Can anyone give me an estimate of a 1 br 1 bath?

Not that i'm looking for real estate agents on gaf. lol. i just wouldn't know where to look around on google.

Aera around east side of L train is pretty cheap.

So as I mentioned earlier in the thread I'm coming to NYC in June.

Whenever I go on holidays I usually go all out and stay at a really nice hotel on the last night. Can anyone give me some tips on a really nice hotel in Manhattan? Budget of say, $300 each for the night (two people).

http://jetsetter.com is your best bet. Book a flash deal in advance and you'll be able to pick up something pretty nice for about 50% off. I got a deal for Hotel on Rivington for $140/night during Valentine's weekend (more than half off) a few days ago.

This one's probably a good choice:

or The Standard:

So is Friday better for anyone else? I'm free both nights so I don't really mind.

I'll be willing to do it either day myself. On Friday, I have a class that starts at 1:10 and ends at 3:50 but since it's the first day of classes, it's gonna end in about half an hour. That said, though I won't be free until 6.

On Saturday, I'm scheduled to volunteer from 6:45-10:00, but as I said, I'm either going to cancel it or move it down to an earlier shift but I have to do it as soon as possible. If it were up to me, I'd be willing to meet up both days because I have nothing better to do provided, Saturday's venue were to be at a different place for novelty reasons I suppose.

I'll also throw this website down here because it's relevant:http://www.nycgameindustry.com/ As I mentioned before, NYC has a game industry that's alive and kicking despite the costs of maintaining a studio here (see: Kaos Studios' closing for reference). The most recent one that opened and hired was Avalanche Studios who are famous for their Just Cause games as well as Renegade Ops to a far lesser extent. Also, as most of you know, Rockstar has a studio here too as well as a ton of mobile game developers. There's a meet and greet networking opportunity every month at Barcade so if anyone is interested in working in the game industry or wants to check out some low key gaming events (test out other devs' games for example), that website is your gateway.

We might actually have to postpone it- just found out I have work events this Friday and Saturday.

What other weekends work best for people? List out some dates and then we can vote on them. I'm fine with next Friday or Saturday (Sunday is the Super Bowl).

smokeymicpot

Beat EviLore at pool.
I am free every day at night besides Friday and Saturday I work late those two days can meet up with you guys later on though.

cities like Montreal, LA, Miami are a lot more impressive right off the bat, they are more shiny, pretty etc..

went to LA. hated it with much gusto. The worst part of my multi city trip. Ugly. boring... now I watch american shows and its based in LA; my reaction is... "meh"

Returning to NYC later this year around OCT for a month. Should be good. :)

Bummer. Going by today's weather I'd imagine it being a good weekend to go out.

Any good tips on nice but lower-prices condos in Brooklyn? Wife and I are starting to look for something to buy, but are in the $300,000 area. Ideally we'd love to live in the city but we'd have to save much longer for that.

where?

Santa Monica and Malibu are gorgeous. I can't imagine living near the beach and hating it.

There are no 1 BR condos in any decent area of Brooklyn for less than $350K, probably closer to $400K. The so-called "down market" hasn't affected real estate prices in Brooklyn or NY at all. It's a joke, really. My favorite part is how they call all condos "luxury" or "super luxury" condos, which basically means that they think they're justified in charging you $500K for a 1 BR.

Yeah, check this out... even in Crown Heights you're gonna be paying ~$400k for a 1BR.

http://streeteasy.com/nyc/sales/crown-heights-brooklyn/beds:1

EDIT Actually if you sort by least expensive it seems like there are some reasonable deals: http://streeteasy.com/nyc/sales/crown-heights-brooklyn/beds:1?sort_by=price_asc

Note that the really cheap ones are co-ops, not condos (big difference - maintenance and other costs are significantly higher for a co-op). And the 1 BR condos start at ~$250K...and that's in Crown Heights, which is not exactly a good neighborhood to say the least.

Ah, I did miss that stipulation.

Crown Heights is indeed what they call "up and coming" "slowly gentrifying" etc. but I think in 5 years time it will be a very nice place.

its a nice place now

It's tolerable if you grew up in Brooklyn and know how to handle yourself. For a transplant? Not so much. Crime stats support that it isn't exactly the best neighborhood. It is safer than it was 10 years ago, however. Then again, so is most of Brooklyn. :p

I love the area near Brooklyn Museum and Eastern Parkway. Whatever you do, don't buy a co-op if you don't plan to live in it for a long while. Very hard to get rid off, once you are ready to upgrade.

Awesome, one of my favorite neighborhoods, but apparently kinda quiet right by the park:

Thank you for this wonderful OT, I'm going there in October for 3-4 days and wanted to experience the best of NY!

Agreed. It's been pretty good lately. Hopefully we won't get hit with a crazy snow storm like last year.

I'm every free practically weekend provided I'm not busy with school work. Since the meet up is next weekend, then it's cool even with school starting on Friday (plus the other classes next week). If it's still going to be in The Gaf, then that's fine too.

Sorry guys, definitely can't this weekend. Just found out that my great grandmother passed away so I have to fly back home for the weekend.

Planning going in September.

Would 4 nights there be enough to sort of see most of the main attractions in a timely manner of would it be better to go for an extra night?

For X-Mas my wife got me a trip to NY city.
I got her a trip to Chicago.
Who gave the better gift?
Both of us have never visited either city.

Well that's up first as we head there the first week of March. Looking forward to it. Pretty bad that I've never been there where I only lived in Boston for the last 40 years.

I live here (NYC) and I've been to Chicago several times for work and for pleasure, and while Chicago is a great place to visit, it doesn't come close to the passion and the energy you experience when you are in NYC.

Also, don't listen to people who say NY'ers are rude, because we aren't.

I moved out of Clinton Hill in July... I think it's my favorite neighborhood in the borough. Every time I go back there's a new restaurant or bar or store on Myrtle. Plus it's close to Fort Greene and close to Bed Stuy.

They are going to hate my wife as she likes to stop, look around and yap about something. I'll work on that.
We will be there during the week only. I'm guessing the foot traffic is busier then than on weekends?

Your wife, definitely. Chicago is good for a weekend but gets boring pretty quickly. There's definitely a lot more to do in NYC, not to mention the culture. Chicago is less hectic, though

Just make sure she doesn't stop in the middle of the sidewalk and you'll be fine (just go to the edge to take pics or stop). Walking around shouldn't be unbearable unless you're on the subways between 5 and 6pm (or 8-9am).

Stopping, looking around, and yapping is fine, just don't do it in the MIDDLE of the sidewalk or in front of an entrance (any kind of entrance, but especially to subways or major businesses). Treat the sidewalks as if they were streets.

And yeah, foot traffic is going to be busier during the week, especially between say 4 and 7 pm.

Every single sports bar in the city and then some. There is a NY team in the Superbowl after all.

The drinking age in the U.S. is 21, yes.

Back about a year ago I used to visit this website that listed events going on in New York City - mostly pertaining to night life. What was great about it was a lot of the listings would have something like "mention that you're on the so-and-so list to get in with no cover". I would use it all the time to find good places to go out and pick-up girls but I eventually started dating someone and stopped going out as often.

I can't remember for the life of me what the site was... any help here? It wasn't Time Out NY or nycGo for sure.

So what's the general consensus of doing a meet up on either Friday the 17th or the Saturday after (it's the weekend after Valentines)? You losers with girlfriends ruined my attempt to make a joke by doing a meet up during Valentines weekend.
