R was for dashing and special attack
L was center camera when tapped, select/use item when held down.

It's like they were intentionally trying to make the controlls complicated.
Would have been good to offload some of the buttons to the directions, then use L/R as camera.
The original Monster Hunter was a PS2 game. Count the number of functions you've just described and compare that to the number of shoulder buttons on the Dual Shock 2.

The 'H' stands for hentai.
That is great, it goes to show that this is the price the 3DS should have launched at. I know many people who didn't even consider getting a 3DS who are now racing to buy one with this new price drop.

Was going to go either 3DS or Vita wherever Monster Hunter went, but since the price drop I'd probably get a 3DS soon and a Vita way way later

regarding controls, if it does go to 3DS:
L/R: camera control
Slider: Running movement
D-pad: Walking
Item management: touchscreen
B:Roll/crouch
X/A: Generally attack moves
Y: Special Attack

EDIT: Wait, I forgot Guard and other things. Forget it. Back to the claw.

Result is then minus infinity, whatever you have on numerator.

:lol at the mirrored image.

Very good sales, about time we saw some good news for the machine!

Of course it all depends on whether or not Nintendo can keep up that momentum.

Between September and beginning of November, probably will continue to be "slow"-ish. But once we hit November and release of Super Mario 3D Land, then we will definitely start to see a huge spike again.

Reading through this thread, the main vita thread, and the now locked (grrrr...) ZOE 3ds thread I am kinda shocked at how sour some posters are over handhelds/consoles they don't like. I know we're all passionate about videogames but some of the blind hate is weird to me.

Well there's also Love Plus coming out as well, that should keep the momentum going for a bit longer.

Wow you're not very creative are you?

Circle Pad: Move
Onscreen touch buttons NOT a virtual stick!(ALA Super Mario 64 DS): Camera control
L Button: Centre camera
L Button (Hold): Open item window
D-Pad: Navigation of Item Menu
Tilt Up (motion controls): Surface (underwater)
Tilt Down (motion controls): Dive (underwater)
R Button (Hold): Dash
Start Button: Open game menu, open or close chat window
Select Button: Kick, tackle (underwater)
A Button: Draw weapon
Y Button: Use item
A Button: Search, climb, confirm selection
B Button: Evade, crouch, cancel selection

Modify the controls as needed for different weapons. The important thing to note is the camera and the swimming controls.

Below is an example of the layout on the 3DS touchscreen (please excuse the quick and dirty photoshop job, I wanted to find icons that would fit the 320 x 240 resolution)

MH3DSexample.png

The buttons on the right control the camera. As SM64DS shows (if it wasn't obvious enough that I nicked the icons from that game) those camera buttons are more than big enough to be able to be touched easily and the spacing will prevent any accidental presses)

The map would be mirrored on the top screen and there would be a little bit of space left over so I thought why don't they put a quick item selection option on the bottom screen? You'd be able to set 4 "favourite" items that you could use with a simple tap of a button (NO MORE HAVING TO TRAWL THROUGH THE MENU FOR YOUR MEGA POTIONS AND WHETSTONES!!!)

Just so you know, every time I read about anecdotally "plenty in stock," before some expected big new numbers, it turns out to be massive and GAF has a mini meltdown.

I look forward to our new 3DS overlords.

I saw two separate families today at lunch with kids on their iPhones playing a game and then passing it to their mothers who then proceeded to play and pass it back. Never seen that before here. iPhones are pretty rampant around here nowadays so I think Nintendo is losing slowly but surely, even with this surge.

How does the touch screen "d-pad" control works? Using a stylus would "handicap" you from using the other buttons without dropping the stylus first (or maybe you can use your pinkie, but that sounds kinda clunky to me).

This is pretty good. I think those 4 items on the top could be quick mixing instead, which would make bomb runs a lot easier. Button-like camera controls on the touch screen along with the d-pad should make it really easy to control the camera at all times.

I would leave all the other controls the same as PSP though.

You would use your thumb. The stylus would not be used at all. It works perfectly fine in SM64DS (and the 3DS actually has a more responsive resistive touch screen than the original DS, so it would work even better here!) and considering that the MH series doesn't use analog camera controls anyway (even MH3 Tri uses digital camera controls when you use the analog stick), it doesn't make a difference.

Using the gyro, you could even do the underwater sections that they had to cut out of MH Portable 3!

Ah ok, i see. Using your thumb would make more sense indeed. Then i can see that it works better :)

What is digital camera controls by the way?

Very good news. The specialist game device market isn't going to just evaporate, despite the bandwagon of doom-mongering that's been going on of late.

I believe it actually is past the point of momentum for 3DS, it is obvious that people are willing to buy the system if the right moves are done, that is, if the price is affordable and there are games, so I expect 3rd party developers to continue releasing their games and make more effort, I believe there's really no hurdle in the way of 3DS.

Basically, there's no analog sensitivity when using the camera in Monster Hunter. You can't tilt the analog stick slightly and see the camera move slowly like in most other games.

In the console MH games, the 2nd analog stick basically acts like a D-pad, so you can move the camera left, right, up and down at only one speed (unlike most other 3rd person games where you can make the camera move in different directions and at different speeds)

Nintendo 3DS can offer many control options, I'm sure Capcom is working on something.

A second, touch-screen dedicated to information and item management would be amazing.

Monster Hunter 3G featuring new sea monsters... in 3D, yas! *waiting*

Oh right, digital = just on and off (no sensitivity in between, either the camera moves or it doesnt). I havnt played any MH games yet, so thanks for the info :)

In the PS2 games the 2nd analog stick controlled your attacks. I think right stick camera was only added on the Wii.

Wasn't there multiple controller options in MH 1 & 2? (I've never played the PS2 games so I don't really know) The "claw" is something that is unique to the PSP versions so I'm sure that there must've been an option to use the 2nd stick for the camera in the PS2 games!

Wow, now to see if this can sustain significantly above the weekly average. Next week's results will probably be more telling in the long term, but these numbers are nonetheless very impressive. Nintendo got their relaunch.

Good to see a dedicated handeld still showing signs of health sales. Even though the 3DS doesn't interest me, it bodes well for the industry, hopefully the VITA can reach moderate success as well.

Nope. The claw started with the original monster hunter, with right stick analogue camera control being first introduced in Tri.

Really?! Not even an option for using the 2nd stick for camera control?!

That's absurd! Well, hopefully the designers have enough intelligence to steal my example layout!

Huh? The first Monster Hunter was a PS2 game. It had this weird control scheme where the 2nd stick controlled the attacks, not the camera.
Yea I misread it just now. The analog attack control scheme is not weird, its pretty innovative actually.
