Nintendo Downloads - May 2010

Got it to download. If anyone has the same issue, just hit try again and go into the wii shop as opposed to hitting 'start' when you're given the option initially.

+ Great opening, reminds of LBP with better music but a bit less flair
+ Nice graphical style that's very clean and defined
+ Surprisingly well-toned music
+ Responsive control that never lets up
+ Aesthetic level variety is impressive

- Lacks nuance in gameplay department. It's very fluid and it controls well but it needs an extra dynamic I think. Still, it definitely hits the mindless fun level with 2 or more people.

Early impressions...

Someone on a UK forum emailed nintendo and it seems Cave Story and Blaster Master won't be getting released anytime soon.

I can understand why neither game has been submitted considering the grumbles Blaster Master has had with regards to 480i only and lack of control options/customise and Cave Story with the new music basically being completely broken and I can see both companies wishing to fix those issues before releasing the games in other markets (as I believe an update would have to go through the same approval process).

Well, not exactly. They've been brutal to some games, and rightfully so.

The problem arises when you get to the good-but-not-great titles. They have one 10/10 right now (World of Goo) and a smattering of 9s, but between the 8s and 7s, it is hard to see which to get. I'm sort of a proponent of no-score reviews for that very reason.

The score with the most usage is 7, though. Just over a fourth. Their higher-scored reviews (8,9,10) tend to be reliable. With 7, it is entering the choose at your discretion territory.

To be fair to them, the lower the price, the lower the thought required to make a purchase. They're not trying to rank someone's shopping list. The reason why they have a ton of 7s is because many of the games out there are good, not great, worth buying if it piques your curiosity although not a must have... and the worst case scenario is that you're out $5-$10 as opposed to a retail game.

i was really psyched for Zombie Panic- loved the DS one. but learning you cannot move around in 3d space just sunk my hopes.
You can't move around in 3D space in Sin & Punishment either. You saying those games suck?

They give almost every download game they review a 6 or a 7.

Do you read the reviews or just browse the scores? The text for Zombie Panic called it fun in an irreverent, over-the-top kind of way but nothing extraordinary. Basically, if you like arcade-y shooters you'll probably like this one.

Disclosure: I'm staff, but didn't write that review.

I've had Zenonia on my Iphone for a while now and I can't get past the clumsy touch controls. I'm glad this will get a DSiware release because the game seems like a solid RPG.

It also doesn't have any real thing that stands out.

I was browsing for New Mario Bros wallpaper, and I stumbled upon this:

http://store.nintendo.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/DigitalCategory?storeId=10002

Did Nintendo secretly stealth launch a web store to their VC/WiiWare?

a terribly inconvenient one, but yeah it looks like it.

+ buy in cash so no leftover points
+ i'm fairly certain that as a canadian i have a chance at dodging tax on this
- awkward check out -> download ticket -> boot wii -> enter ticket -> download game setup
- only two games so far.

That page has been there for ages (I remember putting a link here on GAF a few months back or so)

I'm surprised that they haven't put anything else on there yet. What's the point of a shop that only sells 2 games :lol

The same as a demo service that only has a handful of titles and is withdrawn after a month or two? I'd imagine it's another little tentative Nintendo toe in the water that they will use to gather feedback develop their service further (though, having said that I'm not sure quite how valuable the feedback you could gather from such a limited, unadvertised offer would be...)

Rytmik releasing tonight on DSiWare in Europe (and Metal Torrent)
A sample-based sequencer. (Tracker) Not too heavy on the features; but for 800 points a sure buy for me!

Oh wow.

Too bad I don't really have time for tracking anymore.

(already proved this to myself with Nitrotracker)

oh shit, Rytmik and Metal Torrent tonight?
a pocket music station and a hardcore shmup?

gotta get some points because both are must gets for me(musician and shmup-fan)

man, I just <3 Dsiware :)

edit:

You have to listen to some tracks on their website. awesome stuff
"Tarantula" "Trip to Lhasa" and "Amiga School" are incredible. almost unbelievable that this comes from a Dsiware app

DodoGo! is officially awesome. Among the top three 3rd party games on the service for me (up there with Dark Void Zero and Pop Island) in terms of production values and sheer fun. As zigg already noted, it does start on the slow side ('what, all these levels are (practically) tutorials?!') but it does get to proper challenge levels before long, and stays there. Also, game was apparently made with tons of love - of those little gems that take an old idea and polish it to blinding shine. Basically Pop Island level of perfection, but with more content.

warning: game is not for people allergic to puzzles.

You can make your own samples as well. WOW! I love it and need to play more with it

yea, it was kinda hard for me to understand at first but after 2 hours I'm having a hell of a time producing tunes.

for 800points a realy steal

My first reaction after starting it was "What the Fuck" and then I clicked "clip edit" and the Fuck continued :D

Now I'm familiar with it and it works great. Need to try to make my own clips today. I only used the presets so far.

The songs on the page are all included in the game. But not named like on the page :(

Yea rytmik really rocks. I grasped everything pretty quickly. :) The editing, sample selecting, clip moving/copying is really really well done and it has a really workflow. Even more than Korg DS in some ways, where I always wondered why they didn't put a knob just there to make things easier and quicker. The rytmik devs really thought the interface through function-wise.

You have 4 Tracks, which hold clips that can play 4 different samples each at a time. So you have 16 polyphony (plus echo and sustaining notes, which sometimes tend to drop but that's no biggie). The 170 Samples work quite well and sound nice. You can't really alter the sound (no filters, phasers, eq etc) but there is some variety. You can store 8 x 16 Patterns per song and sort them per color. It is pretty cool that you can change the pitch and volume for the entire clip as well for individual notes.

Can't wait to make more music.

Wow, Photo Dojo is free!

Gonna grab EWJ for sure and will decide between the other two dsiware games. Is the Flips game the 1st in the series or have there been previous?

No real excuse for Nintendo to ignore Virtual Console for two straight weeks. Very disappointing. This is why Nintendo will be getting no additional revenue for Wii Points out of me for the foreseeable future.

Yeah yeah - I know it's a long shot.

Still no Art Style: Light Trax?!?!!?

they released photodojo. There's also X.

I suppose we can ask for our anticipated games every week like the VC <insert game here? crowd does all the time, or just maybe, download and fiddle with the one 'free' game we get this week?

Between GAF and another gaming board I frequent, I think when we all become seniors citizens, the authorities of the day may legalize for euthanasia rather than keep us going.

Virtual Console? Never heard of it.

The real outrage is that they didn't release any new Sokoban games for DSiware this week!

Oh no, two weeks without VC games is a really bad sign. I'm not interested in anything this week aside from Photo Dojo.

If NOA are thinking of stopping the VC updates, they can kiss my business goodbye. The VC is why I look forward to the updates in the first place!

I think it happened before and the half the internet thought they were shutting down VC and preemptively bitched about how Nintendo could do such a thing.

There's really almost nothing left to release anyways. The list is like really small now.

Of course, I curse them for every Monday that doesn't bring Yoshi's Island, but still. What comes after that? Star Fox? Then what?
