I didn't really like the DS one too much, but the Wii version was really good and some people are calling it trash? Seriously? I don't like the art style too much either but some of you are reeeeeealy overreacting. And people saying this Wii U version sucks already? GTFO, at least wait for a few videos other than the one we got last year before you all dump on it.

NSMBW was a great version of a game I've played a million times before. It was the moment the Mario mainline series became like the Mario Kart series, for the worst. They're technically and mechanically competent games, maybe even marginally 'better' than their predecessors, but playing a new Mario Kart or NSMB is like listening to a band that releases new albums that sound the same as their hit album from the 80s/90s. It doesn't aspire beyond anything that doesn't already exist. It's boring. It's totally lacking in imagination.

This is a great assessment.

People who hated NSMBWii probably played it alone, and thus missed out on a fantastic and memorable experience.

Even if it was that, there is great platforming, with a lot of layers in levels like the superplay videos in the castle show, actual new "platforms" that bring new ideas like the rotating cubed mushroom and those rectangular platforms "dancing" in sky levels, the ice power to create ones with enemies, the sand geysers, the big spikes etc... and great use of verticality like a lot of mid castles like the one with big tetris forms or the level where you climb up by staying on a cubed mushroom elevator or choosing to do it more risky with the propeller. So well, seems like lot of autopilot reactions.

Yep. It's the first time they've ever milked proper Mario games. Frankly, I'm impressed it took this long.

i enjoy NSMBWii a lot in multiplayer mode, when i make other players lose a life... lol
"Oh yeah! Golden!"

I played it alone and thought it was stellar.

Wish I played with multiplayer, looked crazy.
I'm not saying you can't enjoy it playing alone, just that the people complaining about the game probably did play it alone, and therefore missed out on a grand time. I played it with my wife, sister, and her husband, and we burned through the whole game in a weekend. It was an absurdly good time, with lots of laughing and swearing. If I had a dollar for every time my sister bubbled because things got scary and she was the only one left. -_-

I hope this isn't a rushed job and I hope they've changed the aesthetics. Playing mario as my mii holds no interest for me. This could turn out to be the first bad mario game in a long time, but I hope that isn't the case.

I expect the Wii U one to retain that silly multiplayer, maybe add a few modes.

NSMBWii hardly felt like milking to me. Felt like an expansion on NSMB and a love letter to classic Mario.

NSMBMii, yeah, it wouldn't be unfair to call it milking. Nintendo seems to have been having a lot of fun developing the most recent Mario games, so I still have faith it'll turn out to be a great game.

NSMBWii was a fantastic platformer and a fun game to play with friends. I'm not against more games like it. If they have another Galaxy-esque leap of a game cooking up for the WiiU, I can be patient for it. Besides. I just recently finished Super Mario 3D Land, so 3D Mario can honestly wait.

I don't get the NSMBW hate. Fine if you don't like the art style, but the platforming was great. I for one am looking forward to seeing it.

I have yet to play (all of) NSMBWii because its still priced high, and everytime I watch footage to get myself interested/excited in it I walk away with a lukewarm feeling. That sounds like the perfect summary of everything I have seen and played of it though.

With the Galaxy games being excellent in every way, I was waiting for the 2D Marios to catch up. Guess I'll have to keep waiting.

I wouldn't eve care if it was the same art if there were more and bigger/crazier levels.

Much of the level design was derivative of what we have seen in yesteryear but it was still outstanding.

They might not be caught up in terms of being revolutionary, but they play fantastically. And we can't forget that NSMBWii was experimental with the inclusion of simultaneous multiplayer.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
I don't get the fuss.
NSMBM will undoubtedly use the Wii U controller in some unique way and therefore offer a different experience.

Criticizing NSMBW for its gameplay is crazy talk, the level design was excellent. But it's a damn shame that the game looks so ugly.

Easy money. That's for sure the reason.

Oh I know why it is. Nintendo is nothing if not completely shameless when it comes to obtaining money, whatever the cheapest way possible to said money may be.

And it's not even the idea of Mario Mii's itself. Mario is always whored, and low-effort shit is par the course for launch windows. This is easy shit that Nintendo can put ten guys on and have the entire Nintendo community slogging it off and calling it a masterpiece for the cost of a dozen chicken nuggets. They know how to manipulate their fans. Chris Kohler is already writing three articles about the groundbreaking nature of this paradigm shift.

But man, it's bad enough I had to spend an entire generation looking at the hideous Mii's. Now they will follow for another generation, with every developer painfully shoehorning them in as that 'extra character' instead of, I don't know, designing an extra character with some real personality. I mean, shit, Mii's are so fucking lazy that all they really are is a head, not that this is particularly enlightening commentary. You're just really designing your head, because the body is mass producted two color shite that only Nintendo could love. Nintendo doesn't just cut corners in hardware, they cut corners in art design too. I kinda feel that when I see a Mii, it's also code for "this game is almost certain to be a shallow mini-game compilation of some sort mass produced for the casualtard set." Naturally there are exceptions, but not many.

I have no problem with NSMB games themselves except they are boring now. Really want something more exciting and revolutionary like Galaxy was. Not on the right path to getting me to buy a Wii U Nintendo. ~____~

Okay, first:

And it's not even the idea of Mario Mii's itself. Mario is always whored, and low-effort shit is par the course for launch windows. This is easy shit that Nintendo can put ten guys on and have the entire Nintendo community slogging it off and calling it a masterpiece for the cost of a dozen chicken nuggets. What the fuck kind of comparison is that? I just spit all over the keyboard.

Second, it says BASED on what we saw at E3, it MIGHT be a little bit different. Not holding my breath on that, though.

Well, when NSMBW was revealed at E3, it was swiftly followed by the Galaxy 2 reveal.

I don't want to believe that Nintendo are going to so flagrantly and obviously milk the cheap and cheerful games immediately for WiiU, and not bother with the showcase of a 3D Mario.

I wouldn't eve care if it was the same art if there were more and bigger/crazier levels.

Much of the level design was derivative of what we have seen in yesteryear but it was still outstanding.

The thing is we don't know if the levels are like yet. If the level design turns out to be lackluster, than we can hate on it.

would be neat if a 2D Wii U mario game had you jumping back and forth between tv and your tablet screen, almost like the Wario Virtual Boy game. That'd make it sort of novel. As long as they did not feel like they had to stick with BLANDVILLE art direction from NSMB, it might even be super fun.

EatChildren

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
NSMB DS was underwhelming and forgettable. NSMB Wii was a lot of fun, and much tighter in design. Both have an hideously sterile art direction.

Knowing that NSMB Wii U will by all accounts use the same art, and probably near identical assets, sucks away lot of the hype I'd normally have for a new Mario platformer. Shoehorning Miis into the package does absolutely nothing for me, and I'm not even opposed to Miis in the first place (I have no beef with them being in Mario Kart).

I fully expect this to be a cheap launch game with a ton of reused NSMB Wii content, and some tacky NSMB 3DS cross platform shit. Blah. Prove me wrong Nintendo, with something more interesting.

Haters can piss off, NSMBWii is a fantastic game that more than lives up to the Super Mario Bros. pedigree and I am really looking forward to a new installment.

Days like these...

Have a Blessed Day
I guess I should clarify my previous statement. I meant the visuals were trash and then to just rehash them on the Wii version was just insulting. I couldn't bring myself to play thru a game with such bland boring visuals twice once on the DS then again on the Wii

I just have one thing to say, Super Mario 64 (Which was the last Mario launch game).

And calm down, you're gonna blow a gasket or something. :p

"based on" doesn't preclude a superior art style, so I'll hold out hope yet. Seeing as I never played NSMBWii, and I've played a buttload of very different 2D plaftormers since NSMB, I'm down for another 2D Mario. Just fix the clinical look.

I knew it was going to happen, there was no reason to think it was something different since Iwata and Miyamoto both talked about it as if it were an upcoming game.

I guess we'll deal with the style and the gimmicks to see if there's some actual substance behind this game. At least (hopefully) it won't have the added use of horrible waggle.

I'm gonna crosspost:

I absolutely do not have a problem with Nintendo launching with a 2D Mario. It's an exceedingly good business move, no matter how much I'd prefer a HD 3D title.

I would have a problem with them maintaining the same artstyle and soundtrack as the other two NSMBs, though. They are launching a HD console, and frankly I don't give a shit if they're aiming for a wider audience; if the game is showcased at E3 this year looking like it did last year, then they are treating their audience with utter contempt. I don't often agree with the whole Nintendo are lazily rehashing their IP argument, but shitting out a NSMB with Miis crowbarred in and token running on the pad is the dictionary definition of the practice.

Somebody in Nintendo's PR had their head screwed on right when they dropped Pikmin 3 at E3 into the discussion, because I'd be feeling really sour about Nintendo at the moment otherwise.

Well I said it's par the course, not that it's the only thing on the course. Most launches tend to have at least one 'decent' game that everyone buys, and then maybe two other games that people buy because they're desperate to have something to play on their launch systems. But generally, it's a wasteland.

Although I liked Super Mario 64 at the time, I don't think it holds up particularly well, so I'd go more with SNES lineup for a really decent game lineup. GBA had an ok one too, iirc.

Great post.

Thanks, I really do hate Mii's though. God, I had to sit with my entire family and painfully create a "Mii" for each of them because they were so set on making sure my Wii had a representation of them all! So I could remember them! It's not fair I have one of my sister Cynthia but not Tiffany, after all! And my fiancee needs one, because my ex-girlfriend is on there! And my Mom needs to be on so she could mingle with my Dad.

Our family never did Christmas time or any holidays or birthdays, so this form of bonding felt way more artificial than it already was by having to look at the ultra sanitized, personality-deprived Mii's for two hours at a time >_<

Your posts are so fucking annoying to read. I've honestly never seen such bitterness towards a video game company. Go lay down or something.

You should see my bitterness toward all video game companies. It's part of my "act", or so I've been told. Or maybe I just really feel the way I do because I love gaming and dislike it when I see extremely talented companies wasting their time pandering to people who hate the medium with lazy crap.

Or maybe you're just annoyed because I hit a sore point for you personally, and the truth is so blinding that it is almost setting you free. I'll go with that one :p
