Well, it might have something to do with the fact that they release games from 3 of the biggest franchises in gaming. (FF, DQ, KH) Not to mention they have plenty of other franchises which perform pretty well. I mean, it's not like Dragon Quest IX is the best selling 3rd party game in the history of Japan or anything. And you'd think that Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy were huge franchises that sell millions of copies all around the world or something the way people talk about them.
The fact that SE took a long time to release Final Fantasy XIII didn't hurt them because they had plenty of other stuff coming out during the gap between XII and XIII, including Dragon Quest IX (as mentioned above, the best selling 3rd party game in the history of the Japanese video game industry), the DS remakes of DQ IV and V (both huge sellers), the DS remakes of FF III (huge seller) and IV (decent success), Crisis Core and Dissidia, KH 358/2 Days, a port of Chrono Trigger that must have been pure profit given how little work must have gone into it, and a shitload of other stuff. Not to mention the fact that when Final Fantasy XIII came out, it sold well across the board and has certainly been profitable for Square Enix.
So, since you didn't understand before, hopefully you do now.
