The presentation started with a little game history. “PlayStation 2 defined digital enterainment…. PlayStation Portable, the next revolution!” The chest thumping was accompanied by thumping speakers.

First up: Kaz Hirai. “Are you guys excited about E3?” The audience barely cheered, so he had to try again. C’mon, show us the goods, then we’ll be excited… maybe.

He does the numbers: 90 million units of hardware, 2 billion units of software. He does the backwards compatibility thing. These are the Sony strengths, so he reminds the audience that these are the goods that Microsoft can’t match.

Queue pointless interlude of flashy CGI graphics (not sure what that was for).

Ken Kutaragi introduced, and he proceeds to give the audience another lesson on the history of the PlayStation consoles. From “Real-time 3D-CG” to “Emotion Engine.” He confirms backwards compatibility of the PlayStation 3, eliciting the first audience applause since he took the stage.

The first shot at MS has been made. MS cannot afford the 360 to go without BC now.

103 GIGAFLOPS more powerful!

What does that mean?! :lol

Looks like Xbox 360 needs more orders of magnitude to compete.

I guess the rumors in EGM and the like, about it being much more powerful than the Xbox 360, are true. They also said they same thing about Revolution. THINGS ARE HEATING UP IN MY PANTS.

Backwards compatible how far? If it's running on blu-ray but still PS2 capable it doesnt seem hard to go compatible all the way back to PS1 again.

More:

-Ken has done his usual powerpoint presentation on sales and playstation lifespan.
-Kojima gave some MGS4 details (he will be writing the script)
-More MGS4 details to come later in the conference
-Ken announced blank re-writeble UMDS est. $25
-GTA Next for PS3 Launch

It's just been confirmed that the PS3 will have a detachable hard drive, six USB ports, a memory stick slot, and seven bluetooth wireless controllers.

Kaz Hirai has taken the stage, beginning his speech with "190 million PS2s sold. 2 billion software sales" Hirai then began speaking about PlayStation 3... It features the CELL processor as previously reported, and also features a Blu-Ray Disk drive, running at 6x. Backwards compatibility with both PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games has also just been confirmed. Hirai also stated that PlayStation 3 runs at twice the speed of Xbox 360. The PlayStation 3 console is capable of reaching 10 Terraflops of processing information.

7x256mb sounds like a typo. Seems to me the reporter was talking about the cache memory allocated to each SPE, in which case 7x256kb might make more sense?

The Gflop rating is much lower than people were expecting, with the GPU at 550Mhz as well and taking guess we won't be see a big difference between the machine if one at all. Basically the CPU on the PS3 is less that twice as fast as the 360 CPU in flop ratings. People were talking between 3-5 times as fast FOR cell. Mind you if that MB of RAM!

Sony also laid out the technical specs of the device. The PlayStation 3 will feature the much-vaunted Cell processor, which will run at 3.2 Ghz and feature 2.18 teraflops of performance. It will sport 256mb XDR main RAM at 3.2 Ghz, have 256MB of GDDR VRAM at 700mhz, a detachable 2.5 inch HDD slot, six usb 2.0 ports, Memory Stick Duo, a SD slot, a compact flash memory slot, Compact flash slot, 2 hdmi outputs, 1 av multi out, 1 SPDIF optical output, and 1-gigabit Ethernet built in port

The PlayStation 3 will also sport some hefty multimedia features, such as video chat, internet access, digital photo viewing, digital audio and video. Sony Computer Entertainment head Ken Kutaragi introduced it as a "Super computer for computer entertainment."

it's actually downgraded. the ISSSC demo unit was running at 4GHZ w/ 8 SPEs, which was calculated to be around 250+GF, now the clockrate is lowered and so is the SPE count. assuming xenon is around 90GF, ps3 is around 193GF. not as high as predicted earlier.
i was actually assuming they'd have trouble getting yields at 4GHz. but there it is, confirmation.

Apparently there are three people from THIS site updating live as the conference goes, they have so far posted this:

EDIT: too slow, already posted above

The ultimate multimedia center. I like splitting off the main ram and video ram than having it in one huge chunk.
