get my ass to mars.

I think I would do it. I have a life here on Earth, even a family, but to be one of the first human beings to ever colonize another planet.. that would be a hard opportunity to pass up. It doesn't matter how difficult or mundane life may be on Mars, the fact that are you are doing it is just amazing.

I'd like to be able to do it. The challenges that would present themselves would be extremely interesting, as would be the whole thing in general. Waking up in the morning, getting yourself ready, putting on a Mars suit and then working on a project outside the base for the day would be something else.

But I don't know if I could. I don't know if I could say goodbye to friends, family and Earth itself for possibly forever. You'd be making history, it would be a great experience, but not being able to come back to Earth for a long, long time, if at all, makes the decision too hard.

It's not that hard, I haven't seem my parents in years and all we do are emails, phone calls, and occasional video chats....which can all be done while on Mars(with a delay).

This is just going to be a reality tv show that amounts to nothing. The guy who created big brother or something is apart of the selection process, lol.

I wouldn't do it but if it worked out just imagine the first group of people..
they'd be legends.

Id be so bored though, wouldn't be able to live like that.

After all, buying a round-trip ticket to Mars from space tourism company Space X will cost you $500,000

Damn, that´s more than a Ferrari!
No way in hell you can take a trip to mars and back for 500k

Well that is true I guess. But we're talking about leaving your planet here. Going to a new world, not having the luxuries you're used to, not being able to go home when things get tough. There wouldn't be too much to do and after a while I'd imagine things would get too much.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be a good experience because my god I'd absolutely love to do something like this, but it's not exactly a decision you can make up an answer to just like that. At least not for me anyway.

Thinking about it is really interesting though.

So when can you sign up? What are the requirements?

According to their site it seems as if anyone over the age of 25 will be able to apply for it, but you can apply for future spots and undergo training once you're old enough. Can be male or female, from any country in the world, it doesn't really matter. Just as long as you're healthy, both physically and mentally. It's also more likely you'll be picked if you are pretty smart in certain fields such as engineering or medicine.

Never mind actually, apparantly it will be like a television show where the viewers get to vote who goes to Mars. No way I'd be voted to go lol.

So if the US, China, Russia, Boeing, GE and Google can't even fathom a permanent human colony on Mars by 2023 how is Mars One planning to do it? Whoever's funding it I doubt they have deeper pockets than NASA/ESA.

They should team-up with China and launch a nuclear propulsion spaceship off the ground:

Project Orion was the first serious attempt to design a nuclear pulse rocket. The design effort was carried out at General Atomics in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The idea of Orion was to react small directional nuclear explosives against a large steel pusher plate attached to the spacecraft with shock absorbers. Efficient directional explosives maximized the momentum transfer, leading to specific impulses in the range of 6,000 seconds, or about twelve times that of the Space Shuttle Main Engine. With refinements a theoretical maximum of 100,000 seconds (1 MN·s/kg) might be possible. Thrusts were in the millions of tons, allowing spacecraft larger than 8 × 106 tons to be built with 1958 materials.[3]

The reference design was to be constructed of steel using submarine-style construction with a crew of more than 200 and a vehicle takeoff weight of several thousand tons. This low-tech single-stage reference design would reach Mars and back in four weeks from the Earth's surface (compared to 12 months for NASA's current chemically-powered reference mission). The same craft could visit Saturn's moons in a seven-month mission (compared to chemically-powered missions of about nine years).

A number of engineering problems were found and solved over the course of the project, notably related to crew shielding and pusher-plate lifetime. The system appeared to be entirely workable when the project was shut down in 1965, the main reason being given that the Partial Test Ban Treaty made it illegal (however, before the treaty, the US and Soviet Union had already detonated at least nine nuclear bombs, including thermonuclear bombs, in space, i.e., at altitudes over 100 km: see high altitude nuclear explosions). There were also ethical issues with launching such a vehicle within the Earth's magnetosphere. Calculations showed that the fallout from each takeoff would kill between 1 and 10 people[citation needed] (a claim that has been disputed: see radiation hormesis).

So, a spaceship capable of getting to mars in about 4 weeks with a crew of 200 people was possible back in the 1950s.
Imagine what sort of nuclear propulsion spaceship we could build with 2012 engineering knowledge and materials.

We could probably easily send off preliminary settler-ship of maybe a couple of dozens of highly trained astronauts and engineers along with materials to build a self-supporting colony, and then send off a second ship with a couple of hundreds of colonizers, more equipment, algae tanks for food, etc.

Big brother style, send a few pornstars up there, no censored events and profit.

Ill be a architect by then :p But I dont want to die on Mars.

Ill be a architect by then :p But the hell Im going.

See I wouldn't be helpful in the slightest since I have a degree in games design, and not the programming sides of things. So I'd be utterly useless :p

I'd love to go, and would like to think that I could prove useful for something...but I doubt it...

This whole thing kind of reminds me of Stargate Universe actually :/

Well not really, you might be usefull as you would probably be able to validly state the look of things, feel and everything. You would be able describe the landscape, and unusual events and areas.

Blizzard better release an offline, LAN-version of it for our martian friends :p

Im sure they wont send us to Mars with no form of entertainment what so ever.

cost reduction

We all know this will cause an Mars Independence war in the far future.

Actually I was thinking about that earlier. I could actually imagine after a few generations of humans being on Mars that tensions between Earth and Mars grow so big that they go to war. Those on Mars want to remain independent and the big shots on Earth want to claim what they think is theirs. It could easily happen since it pretty much always does...

I'm super serious about signing up for this. One of my lifelong wishes is to travel off of earth, the other to have my consciousness transferred into a robot body. This will satisfy one of those wishes quite nicely.

Not only that, but apparently they will be pretty much big brothered. Might not bother them at the beginning of the mission, but after a year or two. They might have enough of being watched. Is this even ethic?

You cant you will use too much electricity :p
Doubt the internet would be fast on Mars.

What? I'm sure that there would be enough electricity.
As for the internet, I wouldn't mind waiting 5-10 minutes for a page to show up.
Basically, as long as I have good food, video games and internet I'll be happy.

Mars One is a 4-man company, including a graphic artist guy and a marketing gal.

It's all just hot air at this point.

GAF probably has more know-how than these clowns.

Well I was being sarcastic about electricity.
I'm not sure about food. You might be eating astronaut tube paste food until the greenhouses start working; then it depends of the skill of the cook. Animal meat might be a luxury.

I'd go no questions asked. Ideally it'd be a man and a woman so at least you could enjoy sex while flying to your death, but even without it I'd go. Give me a bunch of books, a computer to play chess against and I'd be good.

Yeah that would bother me after a while. A year or so would be fine but after that you'd just want to be in peace. Required scheduled video diaries and communication between Mars and Earth would be fine, even multiple times a week, but constantly being watched would be awful.

Don't people on Mars have less birthdays? Yeah I don't wanna die young or have less reasons to party.

Yeah a year on Mars is just under 2 Earth years. But who wouldn't measure their age in Earth years? Lol. You still be the same age. If anything you could say you have 2 birthdays a year (near enough).

At least days are pretty much the same length; wouldn't be difficult to get accustomed to.

As soon as I land on the planet and I'm killing everyone else that came with me and claiming the planets for myself. This is a perfect opportunity to build a society based on my ideas.

Mars will be Best Earth. I will build giant robots and start a war with earth.

With no one there...who you gonna breed with to create a society? The fucking mars face?
