Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling has claimed the current campaign to boycott the 2016 Academy Awards over claims of a diversity deficit is racist to white people.

Rampling, 69, is up for the best actress prize for her role in the British drama 45 Years, from director Andrew Haigh, where she will compete against Room’s Brie Larson, Carol’s Cate Blanchett, Joy’s Jennifer Lawrence and Brooklyn’s Saoirse Ronan. Asked for her take on the current furore over all-white lists of nominees on French Radio network Europe 1 on Friday morning, the British actor did not mince her words. “It is racist to whites,” she said.

“One can never really know, but perhaps the black actors did not deserve to make the final list,” added Rampling. Asked if the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences should introduce quotas, a proposal which no current advocate of increased diversity has mooted, she responded: “Why classify people? These days everyone is more or less accepted ... People will always say: ‘Him, he’s less handsome’; ‘Him, he’s too black’; ‘He is too white’ ... someone will always be saying ‘You are too’ [this or that] ... But do we have to take from this that there should be lots of minorities everywhere?”

When the interviewer explains that black members of the film industry feel like a minority, Rampling replies: “No comment.”

EDIT: Bonus quote from Michael Caine:

Speaking on the Today Show on Radio 4 on Friday, Rampling’s fellow sixties icon Michael Caine advised black actors to “be patient”, and said it had taken him “years to get an Oscar, years.”

Added Caine, 82: “There’s loads of black actors. In the end you can’t vote for an actor because he’s black. You can’t say ‘I’m going to vote for him, he’s not very good, but he’s black, I’ll vote for him’,” said the star of The Italian Job and Get Carter. He continued: “You have to give a good performance and I’m sure people have. I saw Idris Elba [in Beasts Of No Nation] ... I thought he was wonderful.”

Racism is a structure where white people is at the top of the hierarchy thus when viewing racism as a structure there can be no racism to white people.

:(

She was really good in Broadchurch and she was getting a lot of praise for her film. Now, I feel bad for supporting her. You can't claim reverse racism as a valid excuse for anything, especially with a business with as blatantly evident a race problem as Hollywood. She's going to backtrack spectacularly on this, but the damage is done now.

That. Michael Caine quote seems to really dismiss any sort of racism involved in the oscars.

I also love how he says Idris Elba was wonderful.....when he wasn't nominated for this incredible performance haha.

It's an incredibly stupid thing to say, and shows a remarkable ignorance on her part as to the state of the industry.

Caine's remarks are also dissapointing, but aren't as blatantly misinformed.

It's obnoxious how these particular people think the hubbub is just about the lack of black actor nominations. The lack of nominations for black filmmakers of any kind is what has driven these complaints.

I hate this statement. I know plenty of racist people that aren't white.

I get both sides of the argument...

That makes me an asshole monster.

At the end of the day Fuck Hollywood for not promoting more movies with more diverse casts.

I just want to take this time to say Charlotte Rampling has the best screen performance of 2015 in 45 Years, and don't let her stupid old rich white people comments keep you away from watching one of the best movies of the year.

People like her hate all diversity, because diversity inherently harms the most powerful group.

“Diverse” simply means a place without any White people in it.

So every time they talk about a “lack of diversity”, they have said what their object is : a place that becomes less and less White – which is genocide.

That’s why diversity is a codeword for White genocide..

Except when he compared the wait to get his own first Oscar to the struggles for any non-white people to win an Oscar. :p

I got grudge sucked!
Who was she in Broadchurch? I just watched the 1st season.

I guess this is in response to the whole Jada Pinkett thing? I'll just stick with what Aunt Viv said

i get both sides but one side has a valid complaint and the other side only has a point if you consider things from their myopic and selfish perspective

And why would I want them?
Was Idris Elba not nominated because it was a netflix movie? Has any Netflix movie been nominated for an Oscar?

Idris Elba, Ryan Coogler, Sam Jackson and Michael B Jordan should have all received nominations.

Statements like this piss me off greatly. I've seen several white people being heavily discriminated against and areas where they aren't welcome at all. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Best wishes.

Ugh, that's very disappointing to hear from two really great actors.

I wish I could say they're just a product of their time, but they work with younger people all the time. They know what the industry's like.

well they could add Tarantino's Samuel Jackson on the list but i don't really remember him being that good. anyone else, what other movies this year had great black actors performances?

I love this current narrative of diversity=anti-white. I am betting she considers herself quite the liberal and yet has issue with diversity. There's a lot of that liberal fatigue going around.

I won't disagree at all. The situation should be "target the film industry"

The awards are for already made films. Target the source that creates and makes films.

What she said was stupid. What you said was also stupid.

I also agree with Caine that Elba was great in Beasts of No Nation. I didn't know that was eligible for the Oscars, but if it was and he didn't get a nod, then I can see where people have a problem.

You just described racism from a sociological perspective.

Racism to white people or by minorities is a thing and reality. Though Carlotte Rampling said some dumb thing.

Not all actors are intelligent, rational people.

Neither one of them seem to grasp what they're talking about.

It had a theatre release.

If it wasn't nominated because it was a Netflix release first, then the award isn't about merit, is it?

(The Oscar aren't about merit, but that's just the first step down the rabbit hole.)

racism != bigotry/prejudice

Dictionary said:
the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.
prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.
"a program to combat racism"
synonyms: racial discrimination, racialism, racial prejudice, xenophobia, chauvinism, bigotry, casteism
"Aborigines are the main victims of racism in Australia"

They need to update every dictionary then

Racism is effectively a belief system of racial superiority. What you're describing could perhaps be most accurately described as prejudice.

this is a fine sentiment but the academy is 94% white and mostly old. making more diverse films doesn't guarantee more diverse awards when the jury pool is so homogeneous.

I'd rather have seen Abraham Attah nominated as he was just incredible.

Great, you've turned an entire topic on its head with this nonsense.

I wouldn't mind her comment if it wasn't that the academy voters are largely old white people from what I've heard.

So it's old white people voting for white people.

Where the fuck are the Latinos

Seriously. I'll grant that the makeup of the Academy is the product of the industry, but the Academy is not changing with the industry.

Two Netflix documentaries were nominated: What Happened Miss Simone? and Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom.

So it's not because Beasts of No Nation was a Netflix movie.

You forgot Abraham Attah somehow..I'd say more than Elba.

I hear ya, they are both on the same level as far as their performances in BONN in my opinion. I would have absolutely loved to see Attah get a nomination. I'd love to see a black child get an Oscar one of these days. I don't think that has ever happened.

you could also look at this from the perspective that it was possibly only netflix-first because major studios didn't want to pick it up

this is also the kind of thing that prejudice causes
