Wii U situation in UK is very critical and Nintendo is doing little to change this. This is the branch that needs a change ASAP the most.

Yes but I think if they're going to change something it won't be before March and the release of the next 1rst party titles. For Q1 it's done.

Our charts must be the most depressig in the world. We must be the most casual gamer nation.

All people in the UK buy are COD, FIFA and games being sold for £20 in supermarkets.

For all the flak that Iwata and Reggie get, Shibata should be the one of the hot seat.

Why would he be on the hot seat? Does anyone think that someone else really could've done any better at selling the Wii U in Europe? Games are the consoles biggest problem at the moment. The marketing isn't great, but having the right games could fix that in a heartbeat.

It's a list of best-selling games. They're 'mass market / lowest common denominator' by definition.

I'm still wondering which countries we should be looking at for a 'hardcore' top 10.

Well the situation isn't nearly as dire in other regions, but that's not really his fault. Top management was probably behind a lot of what went wrong.

Eastern Europe

In Poland for years sales record belonged to Baldurs gate and first game to sell more was The Witcher :D

Europe has the smallest established Nintendo audience, so if Wii U was going to end up struggling in all three regions as it currently is, it was pretty much inevitable that it'd sell worst there. Not sure how much this can be traced to NOE-specific decisions.

Iwata is naming the devices and deciding what the advertising budget is going to be in all regions. It was also his job to make sure the Wii U had proper software support out of the gate from first party and third parties. The Wii U's crappy launch, just like the 3DS', falls squarely on him.

Interesting article on EG about WiiU sales

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-01-25-nintendos-wii-u-sales-struggle

Eurogamer has been told by UK numbers firm Chart-Track that, after five weeks on sale, the Wii U's initial sales figure counted for 50.1 per cent of the system's total. This indicates that Wii U sales in the UK were at the 80,000 units mark at the beginning of January.

Pretty bad.

We know that PlayStation 3 sold 165,000 units over its opening weekend in the UK, so another 29.3 per cent of sales would count for 48,345 units - pushing its five-week total to 208,000. Xbox 360 sold 70,000 in its opening weekend, so therefore sold 101,000 over five weeks. Finally, the Wii sold 105,000 units in its opening weekend, meaning in five weeks it had sold over 210,000. This leaves the Wii U, in the UK at least, lagging some way behind.

In terms of money made, it took four weeks for the Wii U to earn £18 million - the amount that the original Wii made in its launch week. That's despite all three Wii U launch bundles costing more, with the most popular Premium bundle priced at least £100 higher per unit.

Well, that's going to make the Nintendo PR job a bit tougher.

At least we got some kinda numbers, so we have a general idea how badly its doing. No surprises after Nintendo's silence in EU sales. The numbers will remain this shit for a few months looking at the release schedule.

Don't know why some expect Wii U games to magically chart every week; when nothing new has been released for it. Is not like a few thousand people (or sometimes just hundreds) needed to make it to the chart; will wake up and want to buy a Wii U and Mario for no reason without a price reduction.

There were 2 new games released this week and entry bar for top 40 is like 1000-2000 pcs.

Dat (continued) decline.

Fuck - more decline. I seriously think theres some non-generational effects were seeing; e.g. retail is fucking dying.

Supermarkets were becoming major game retailers but they've scaled back to more limited titles/space following the decline. Fact is they have other stuff to sell more profitably.

Its fucking brutal. I fear Q4 this year in every territory.
The UK especially is only going in one direction; down George Osborne's trousers.

If Microsoft prices right I could see a lot of newfound demand.

Whats the right price though? By far it'll come down to games. Bigger thing is giving good profit margins to retailers. Its deaths door out there; they need Supermarkets to get behind games again.

I'm honestly not that sure. If comments by friends and family are anything to go by, we may have reached a point where transition is not as simple as it used to be.

I've seen rumors of $299. Of course it's also about lineup. It's hard to get excited as long as we haven't actually seen anything. But Microsoft isn't dumb. They have the superior marketing. The stakes are high. They have proven they are willing to invest.

I don´t think so, economical problems aside, we have reached a point were the old games/consoles got boring.
Sony and MS need to excite the gamers again. Be it with graphics, innovation in games, large realistic worlds etc.. All that for a reasonable price (300-400 max) and people will bite.
Maybe next generation won´t sell another 150+ million consoles but it should be enough to sustain a profitable business.

But one thing is perfectly clear, Sony and Ms need to deliver from the get go or they are in trouble. No overpriced hardware, shitty launchlineups, anti used/always online stuff or RRoDs anymore.

I can see Sony struggling with price and innovation. As excited as this board gets over specs, the price needs to be reasonable. Especially in the UK and US they need to regain their footing.

Don't think so. Just look at Vita. Although its definitely a treat for those who enjoy it, unfortunately the amount of people willing to buy a console for the specs alone are far and few between. And home systems don't get a pass. Its all about the games, games are paramount. Graphics will move systems, but not as much as you make out to be and it'll only give the launch a boost before fizzling down again like every other system until it gets games.

Its hard to say definitively the retail EU (UK) problem. Observed generational fatigue + lukewarm to disappointing reception of new systems, growing digital and mobile sales explain it just as easily as "retail is dying".

Some significant (half) price drops for Zumba, still ongoing.

NSMBU was 45.

The Vita was designed for a market that barely exists outside of Japan (core handheld gaming). That´s not the case with gaming consoles. 360 and PS3 have sold over 150 million combined and are still selling.

Graphics were only one of his examples and he didn't even mention specs. Sometimes I get the impression AOC83 gets antagonized hastily and responds in kind.

Handheld and home console markets are not the same. Microsoft is not a factor in one of them.
