PAL Charts - Week 42, 2015

That is UK for you. German and french charts are far more important for JRPGs in Europe.

I looked at Disgaea D2 in 2013 PAL charts and it wasn't in the German top 50, didn't even chart for the weeks around launch. It was in the UK all formats though. Not sure how we access German all formats.

Many are trumpeting Germany and mainland Europe for jrpg but is there any numbers? I can't see places like Italy, Spain, Holland, Germany selling much different than the UK for these niche titles and probably less in some cases.

DQH below Tales of? That's a very disappointing result. One could say "well, it's UK" but Tales of sold better and it should be considered as nicher franchise in Europe than DQ (DQIX opened very high in UK - ok, it was Summer but stayed in the Top 10 for a lot of weeks).

Wasn't 1m eventually sold? The last known numbers for DQIX in the West was 1.1m IIRC. The leit-motiv was, though, that jRPG fans are on home consoles in Western markets, and the first DQ game on a Sony platform after 10 year hiatus should have done moderately well, regardless the genre (it's not a Musou, right? An action-RPG should be even better for Western tastes).

You seem concerned. I mean, you had this to say earlier in the year.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=150065357&postcount=108
It'd be a joke if they decided to bring over a DQ Musou, since it'd sell less than most of DQ games ever arrived, rather than a traditional jRPG. DQ fans want a jRPG, not an action game, and the Western fanbase is not as strong as the Japanese one, where they'd buy even DQ toilet paper.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=150067094&postcount=112
I am quite skeptical about the sales potential of DQH in the West. PS4 has a big installed base, which buy a lot of Western games (I mean, a lot) but still has to prove itself in sustaining a sizeable fanbase for less known Japanese games. DQ Western fanbase is tiny, and I'm doubtful it will buy DQH in big numbers, since it's not even a jRPG.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=150073832&postcount=139
Square Enix has never been actually satisfied by DQ sales in the West, not even when the game sold 1m units (DQVIII), to the point that the IP was handled by Nintendo for a while; now suddenly the IP starts selling well because of PS4? That's a bit reaching.

DQH and Disgaea numbers are as expected, Sony send them to die, the end of the year is stacked and people choose more wisely their purchase, I will buy them for sure but I already bought Until Dawn, Forza 6, Uncharted collection, Halo 5, BO3 and preorder Fallout 4 for this year...

I have no much money or time for them now, will have to buy them cheaper next year.
Sony is neither the publisher nor developer for DQH and Disgaea 5.

Zesty did probably 5k units in the first week in the second biggest western market (UK).
Would it be wrong to question PS4 Zestiria getting in the 50k range worldwide in the first week?

Xillia 2 did 43k in NPD August that year (dont have worldwide data) and that was half what Xillia 1 did (IIRC).

So it is not strange to say, that Zestiria will have a bigger installbase on PC Day1 and will outsell it constantly. It is already one of the most successfull JRPG's on Steam pre-release and the data doesnt include GMG Pre-Orders or other retailers outside steam.

Of course, sales could fall off a cliff with a bad port....

The UK is a terrible market for JRPGs, those games do significantly better in Germany & France. You're going to be disappointed if you expect a JRPG to sell anywhere close on PC as it does on a Playstation platform.

Yeah I know but it's their "exclusives", they probably have something to say about the planning and if they don't have something to say, Square Enix just show one more time why they're stupid as hell.

They're not the publisher, they don't decide when any of those games release, those decisions are entirely up to the publisher.

Three niche Japanese games releasing on the same day in mid-October was utter madness. Frankly I'm amazed that that they all got inside the top 20.

I dont think that Sony has any saying in that.

Well, about Square Enix, Winter and Q1 is pretty packed, so if they wanted to wait for a quiet period, it would have to be maybe summer 2016. I'm not sure if the game would sell that much more if being released then.

We actually don't know many it sold digitally on the ps4. And There's the ps3 too.

Zestiria's PC numbers are also helped with the free Symphonia Chronicles deal which from what I've seen of response here would have most likely contributed to the extra numbers.

I'm just happy to see 3 JRPGs in the Top 20. To me, I don't find Zestiria or DQH sales to be disappointing. Disgaea 5 was expected since it's really niche, though I would've liked it to be higher :/

Nice to see some JRPGs in the charts, wish they were higher though.

But with the tons of JRPGs coming to PS4 it should eventually build a decent JRPG fanbase.

This really isn't true for some genres like JRPGs. France and Germany are both bigger markets for this genre. Wouldn't surprise me if Italy as well.

You wouldn't like to know how much smaller Italy is with respect to UK as a video game market - I'm skeptical the Italian market for jRPGs is even comparable to UK.

You seem concerned. I mean, you had this to say earlier in the year.

I hope it's allowed to change opinion over time - in particular when receiving newer signals from the market. After the good reception in Japan and other Asian market, the good reviews, how the game seemed more jRPG than Musou, I thought it could have done a bit better than <4.000 in UK. My initial feeling proved right (but we should see how it's performing in other countries).

Nope, I actually expect the worst debut for the franchise, the "setting" didn't help The Order.
It did, actually. The Order was one of the top grossing game in UK. Bruno has made the thread with the top grossing games and both The Order and Bloodborne were included in it.

JRPGs usually sell fine in Italy too.

Got any numbers for TALES OF XILLIA in Italy?

I looked at the charts and TALES OF XILLIA is either first or second in the UK, Italy, France Germany then drops out of them all after. I'd be interested to see numbers for tales in the UK and Italy as it was both second there. I wouldn't mind betting it did more numbers in the UK or at worst nothing significant.

I looked at Disgaea in Germany, the country to do all the damage and it didn't even chart, while it was in the all formats in the UK. Had a quick look at top 100 and I see a very similar games all round with FF remaster and Lightning Returns at the bottom of the charts for both UK and Germany, no numbers though so who knows. Seems like except for France and Nintendo love still going, the rest of the EU is very similar and these jrpg games do very small numbers all over. Seems like people want their own country to be a little heartland for the jrpg but I'm not seeing it yet.

Ukie leaked the DQ number (95%);

There’s no shortage of titles for RPG fans as Square Enix release ‘Dragon Quest Heroes’ (The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below) (3,101) at No19.

Sorry, italy numbers are so hard to find, we don't even know the sales of the 8 gen console... I just know by end of 2014 PS4 should be 500-550k LT ( and is just a estimate ) and got 74% marketshare in 2014.
Oh, also Tomadachi life sold over 10k by June 2014... the only numbers i remember. :p

EDIT: And PS4 first year sold faster than PS2.

Bundles bundles.

...I... don't see the problem with this... :-|

Yep, it's the bundle keeping it up there. I imagine FIFA on XB1 is being helped by that bundle as well. Forza also has a bundle, as do Destiny and Metal Gear. I'm glad getting a game with a new console has become more of the norm this gen.

Checking past Assassin's Creed numbers I found a contradiction in the figures extrapolated from UK monthly charts published by Famitsu.

Let's start with Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

Code:
November 2010 Individual Format Top Ten (90%)

01. [360] Call of Duty: Black Ops (Activision Blizzard) - 1,358,000
02. [PS3] Call of Duty: Black Ops (Activision Blizzard) - 1,035,000
03. [PS3] Gran Turismo 5 (Sony Computer Ent.) - 269,000
04. [WII] Just Dance 2 (Ubisoft) - 236,000
[B]05. [360] Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (Ubisoft) - 216,000
06. [PS3] Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (Ubisoft) - 168,000[/B]
07. [WII] Wii Party (Nintendo) - 140,000
08. [NDS] Professor Layton and the Lost Future (Nintendo) - 131,000
09. [360] FIFA 11 (Electronic Arts) - 124,000
10. [PS3] FIFA 11 (Electronic Arts) - 109,000

[Week 46, 2010] Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood - 228,600 / NEW
[Week 47, 2010] Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood - 155,400 / 384,000 (-32%)

We already have the first week sales of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (228,600), now let's move on to the next release, Assassin's Creed: Revelations.

Ubisoft mirror last year’s Assassin’s Creed (Brotherhood) by debuting at No2 in the week after Call of Duty launch, thanks to ‘Assassin’s Creed: Revelations’. Sales of the latest Assassin’s Creed are indeed a Revelation for Ubisoft as the title beats last year’s title in both units (+4%) and revenue (+8%) for week 1, to become the most successful of the franchise and also of any previous Ubisoft release.

228,600 + 4% = 237,700

[Week 46, 2011] Assassin's Creed: Revelations - 237,700 / NEW

And now Assassin's Creed III

Officially released on Wednesday, ‘Assassin’s Creed III’ becomes Ubisoft’s biggest ever launch title, selling almost double that of ‘Assassin’s Creed II’ and outperforming the publisher’s previous best, last year’s ‘Assassin’s Creed: Revelations’ by over 117,000 units.

237,700 + 117,000 = 354,700.

[Week 44, 2012] Assassin's Creed III - 354,700 / NEW

But there is a problem, somebody who has access to the actual data said in these Pal Charts threads that Assassin's Creed III sold 332,000 units, note that all these numbers aren't upweighted to 100% of market, including that 332,000 figure.

Ok, let's take that 332,000 figure to get the adjusted Assassin's Creed: Revelations number, 332,000 - 117,000 = 215,000

If we use this adjusted number it adds up with the November 2011 chart published by Famitsu, remember that it was the same source I used for getting Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood number.

Code:
November 2011 Individual Format Top Ten (90%)

01. [360] Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision Blizzard) - 1,237,000
02. [PS3] Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision Blizzard) - 872,000
03. [360] The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda Softworks) - 313,000
04. [PS3] Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (Sony) - 184,000
05. [360] Battlefield 3 (Electronic Arts) - 178,000
[B]06. [360] Assassin's Creed: Revelations (Ubisoft) - 168,000[/B]
07. [WII] Just Dance 3 (Ubisoft) - 144,000
08. [PS3] Battlefield 3 (Electronic Arts) - 136,000
09. [PS3] The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda Softworks) - 136,000
10. [360] Saints Row: The Third (THQ) - 133,000

168,000 is the Xbox 360 total for weeks 46 and 47.

[Week 46, 2011] Assassin's Creed: Revelations - 215,000 / NEW

Xbox 360 (56%) - 120,400 / NEW
PlayStation 3 (43%) - 94,600 / NEW

[Week 47, 2011] Assassin's Creed: Revelations - 83,600 / 298,600 (-61%)

Xbox 360 (56%) - 46,800 / 167,200
PlayStation 3 (44%) - 36,800 / 131,400

So these seem to be the figures closer to reality for the titles of this franchise:

Code:
[Week 46, 2007] ASSASSIN'S CREED (UBISOFT) - 156,000 / NEW (90%)
[Week 47, 2009] ASSASSIN'S CREED II (UBISOFT) - 175,000 / NEW (90%)
[B][Week 46, 2010] ASSASSIN'S CREED: BROTHERHOOD (UBISOFT) - 207,000 / NEW (90%)[/B]
[B][Week 46, 2011] ASSASSIN'S CREED: REVELATIONS (UBISOFT) - 215,000 / NEW (90%)[/B]
[B][Week 44, 2012] ASSASSIN'S CREED III (UBISOFT) - 332,000 / NEW (90%)[/B]
[Week 44, 2013] ASSASSIN'S CREED IV: BLACK FLAG (UBISOFT) - 128,000 / NEW (90%)
[Week 46, 2014] ASSASSIN'S CREED: UNITY (UBISOFT) - 153,000 / NEW (95%)
[Week 46, 2014] ASSASSIN'S CREED: ROGUE (UBISOFT) -
[Week 43, 2015] ASSASSIN'S CREED: SYNDICATE (UBISOFT)

In addition, we now get the same Watch Dogs number than using L.A. Noire.

Ubisoft take their second All Formats No1 of the year, and smash the week 1 sales record for new IP in the process as event title ‘Watch Dogs’ takes the crown.

It eclipses the new IP record set by ‘L.A Noire’ three years ago with an increase of 58%. In terms of units, ‘Watch Dogs’ breaks into the Top 20 for best ever launch weeks taking 17th spot on the list. The new release finds itself in good company with only titles from mega-brands GTA, Call of Duty, FIFA & Battlefield ahead of it. For Ubisoft it’s also a personal best with ‘Watch Dogs’ beating ‘Assassin’s Creed III’ as their biggest launch in the UK by 17%.

Watch Dogs = Assassin's Creed III (332,000) + 17%

332,000 * 1.17 = 388,440

or

Code:

250k is no Problem.

It's hard to tell because we don't have the splits by platform, but Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag was released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in week 47, 2013 and sales increased by 123% for a total of nearly 67,000 units. The game had some impressive legs and it would end the year only 100,000 units below Assassin's Creed III despite the huge difference in its launch week.

Oh please, you went on and on and on about how Dragon Quest Heroes would be a massive bomb and it didn't make any sense to localize it because Dragon Quest fans didn't want it. Now all of a sudden you were expecting some massive sales performance of a spinoff of a franchise that hasn't even seen a western release in over 4 years.

I don't - I just don't see how the fact that DQIV and DQV hadn't charted in UK has anything to do with the fact that I was expecting a better placement for DQ Heroes in the same chart.

Again, read your own posts. The DS remakes didn't even chart. Non mainline entries seem to have a lot of trouble selling in the UK. And I don't believe DQ Heroes is a mainline entry.

Well, at least Germany is pulling its weight when it comes to Japanese games.

Then again, UK was never a very strong market for them in the first place.

Tales of Zestiria and Dragon Quest are rather cheap due a promotion of a chain and amazon.
44€ for a brand new title is a pretty good deal.

Disgaea might also rise a bit due that.

Hopefully DQ does well enough for future localization's (and to maintain a healthy presence in the west eventually). I did as much as I could by buying the game day one. Fantastic game.

But the idea that future iterations might not come over worries me.
