PAL Charts - Week 42, 2015

Not a comparison - just saying that DQ has had some relevancy in UK, a market typically seen as reluctant towards jRPGs. It is also true that DQ Heroes was seen as the comeback of the IP on Sony platforms - quite a big deal if you talk with the fanbase. We'll see whether DQ Heroes' performance in Western markets will be considered as good by Square Enix.
Id like to talk to the fanbase like you do. At the end of the day this is a musou spin off. Its not a grand coming of dq, nor is it being treated as such by SE.

I find Dragon Quest Heroes sales really disheartening, well at least I did my part...

Less than 5,000 units for Tales of Graces f and around 6,000 for Tales of Xillia.
I also did my part and bought all three (ToZ, dqh, D5).

Thanks for the numbers. Counting digital, this appears to be a good hold for the franchise.

For reference:

Dragon Quest VIII (PS2): #19 All Formats
Dragon Quest IV (NDS): didn't chart at all
Dragon Quest V (NDS): didn't chart at all
Dragon Quest IX (NDS): #4 Individual Formats

DQIX held the 4th position for 4 consecutive weeks (it went up +27% during its second week), then 7-> 14 and so on.
Thanks for proving that DQH sales are infact not bad. They are good for whatever is expected of the series.

Relative to the chart those JRPGs have done pretty well. However seeing the actual numbers, they aren't the sort of titles you can really base a viable business on in isolation.

One presumes that a fair few folk would go digital on those titles

In all the threads I saw about the game, I kept reading about people writing that this is not a Musou game but more of an actionRPG - by briefly playing the game I can confirm is not exactly a Musou game as, for example, HW or DW (though the last DW I played was on PS2). The producer also confirmed that the gameplay is not exactly in line with a Musou game - if the market sees the game as a Musou game is hard to tell; SQEX also tried to differentiate the game by calling it DQ Heroes and not DQ Warriors (which would have sounded bad given the original name of the franchise in US).

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I have to be honest: I thought DQH and Disgaea 5 would've been quite lower in charts. I'm a bit positively surprised by their performance in UK.

If this is how non-mainline entries sell in the UK then you're only hurting your own argument.

He also conveniently left out DQVI which came out after DQIX and didn't chart either, but of course, that wouldn't fit with his narrative.

I recall others like DQ Swords Wii also not charting either, but who cares about that! It's all about about DQ on Playstation underperforming!

What exactly is your point here ? Implying DQ Heroes should have been perceived as a traditional mainline Dragon Quest ?

DQ Heroes is not exactly a musô because of its clever tower defense mechanics, but it's still a beat'em-all and it does not offer the exploration or the story you expect when you buy a Dragon Quest RPG, or any other RPG.

18 PS4 games to 10 XB One games. That some strong hold.
wander what is going to happen after Oct 21 price drop of PS4 in Europe, and how MS is going to counter it..

I thought at least Disgaea wouldn't even chart, so that's nice to see. Anyways, the release japanese trio was badly timed imo. They should've released with 1 or 2 weeks in between, not all in the same week. They're surely sharing a good bunch of their fanbase and only a few of those will buy 2 or even 3 on the same day.

No-one really cares about official price drops at a time like this. It's all about waiting until mid November/early December and getting a console for as little as £200.

This year should be even more insane with how low some prices have reached. Was possible to get an X1 for £240 just a few days ago...

Absolutely. Awful timing. Like a lot of people presumably, I had to make a choice and I took DQ Heroes last week (digital). Tales of will come a little later.

On second thought, Dragon Quest Heroes is probably as high as it could realistically be expected to. Ultra niche series + genre of game that never sold well + week packed with titles that mostly appeal to same audience.

Anyway, the future of this franchise in the West won't depend on how an spin-off sells in a hostile market for jrpg's like UK.

I too don't understand how could they come with this release schedule : it's not like the preceeding or following weeks are full of similar japanese release, couldn't they space out a little better?
May be this means that the games could have a bit of a better hold in the coming week ?

Germany, France and some other European territories are where DQH and Tales should do their damage. Germany and France in particular are always big on Japanese titles.

50% drop for Uncharted is actually pretty good by any AAA standard, but it didn't light the chart on fire last week anyway.

I'd say it will rely on legs more than your average AAA games.

No I Think Forza is so high on the charts because its been bundled alot, I dont Think it sells alot of consoles outside the first week.
Mhmm.

If someone NEEDED an XB1 for Forza one could make the argument they would have jumped in at launch for Forza 5.

Zesty is FINE on PC.

Worldwide Steam ownership (preorders only, release is in 13 hours)

Data is two days old.

Those numbers are actually horrendous, since they're actually worldwide numbers & not an individual market.

EDIT: Oh, that's the PC version, nevermind then, those numbers aren't bad for a Japanese game on PC.

Dear god @ those dates...

I mean, I knew they released an AC every year but seeing them stacked over one another really hammered in that point.

You can't really fault them financially, every year those games sold 8-12 million, they milked that cow dry, & Watch Dogs might replace it this gen.

Zesty did probably 5k units in the first week in the second biggest western market (UK).
Would it be wrong to question PS4 Zestiria getting in the 50k range worldwide in the first week?

Xillia 2 did 43k in NPD August that year (dont have worldwide data) and that was half what Xillia 1 did (IIRC).

So it is not strange to say, that Zestiria will have a bigger installbase on PC Day1 and will outsell it constantly. It is already one of the most successfull JRPG's on Steam pre-release and the data doesnt include GMG Pre-Orders or other retailers outside steam.

Of course, sales could fall off a cliff with a bad port....

This really isn't true for some genres like JRPGs. France and Germany are both bigger markets for this genre. Wouldn't surprise me if Italy as well.

DQH and Disgaea numbers are as expected, Sony send them to die, the end of the year is stacked and people choose more wisely their purchase, I will buy them for sure but I already bought Until Dawn, Forza 6, Uncharted collection, Halo 5, BO3 and preorder Fallout 4 for this year...

I have no much money or time for them now, will have to buy them cheaper next year.

There has been 2 movies in recent years, the release of Kai and Super is now airing

and all of them were bad, so fucking bad it still hurts.
