Sales for Wii, DS and a few software titles. Apparently it's internal sales tracking by Nintendo, so no independent trackers a la GfK, Charttrack etc., but it's sold through apparently.

All sales for Europe only:
- DS 40m (first to hit the 40m mark)
- Wii 20m (fastest to hit the 20m mark)
- Wii Sports Resort 5m
- Wii Fit + Wii Fit Plus 9.6m
- NSMB Wii 2.5m
Must be sell-through seeing as of Sep. 30th, 2009, Nintendo had shipped 46 million DS's to "Others".

What do they define as "Europe" ? And crazy shit NSMB. This is motherfreaking insane.

WOW @ NSMB Wii, maybe just maybe it might actually end up beating MW2 worldwide by the end of January after all!

Double WOW @ Wii Fit, shame we can't get a breakdown of the two (Though I'm sure that Wii Fit Plus can't be over 2 mil) but damn, that's insane for just one region and at double the price of a typical Wii retail game!

Others is more than Europe though. Keep in mind that Nintendos "Other" territory basically includes everything outside of Japan and USA/Canada (dunno, Mexico is perhaps also included in the Americas region?).
Australia alone is probably at sth. like 2m DS systems.

Good question.

Invizimals (this psp game) has sold more than 70k units in Spain and it's now out of stock.

Yeah, I just saw it. It's bit vague, though. NPD should be coming in 10 days, though.

jrricky said:

You mean it has beat them separately? PS3 for sure, 360, probably. The 360 version should be a over 6 million worldwide based on the figures I posted, but we can't know how much exactly. And if we consider the "approaching 4 million" in the US, NSMBWii goes well over 8 million and that most likely settles the battle.

US is at roughly 4 million according to NOA's press release.

So...

New Super Mario Bros. Wii
US: 4 million (Dec 31st)
EU: 2.50 million (Dec. 31st)
JP: 2.49 million (Dec. 27th)
---------------------------------
Total: 8.99 million

---------------------------------
Total: 9.53 million

MW2 seems to be ahead for now (Since US december sales have not been counted), but I'd say that NSMB Wii beating it by the end of January is a lock now.

It's ahead by way more than a hair. MW2 European sales are missing a chunk of Europe and the Dec. sales in the US. I'll just pull numbers out of my ass and say that amounts to 3 million. I can't see NSMBWii putting 3 million over MW2 in January.

It will eventually beat it, though. And faster than many imagined.

Yeah I missed that little quib. I still reckon it'll manage it, especially when you consider the Japanese sales on top of the no doubt massive US and EU ones.

When Nintendo talks about Europe they mean UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Austria(?), Switzerland(?) and the Benelux States. +/- one or two countries maybe.

Its made in Spain so SCE Spain has been pimping it. I swear it was two weeks ago they were pimping selling something like 35k and now this.

I wouldn't look too much into it, its "their" game so its getting their biggest share of PR, attention, ads and all that. And well, PSP isn't totally dead here, so its doing good for itself.

DS sales are awesome, and deserved!!

And the fact it has the potential to sell 50m+ in Europe is..., very good! :D

I thought that hardware bundles counted towards the charts, hence the constant charting of LEGO Batman for the 360.
Right, but the original Wii Sports never charted either. It's the same with Wii Sports Resorts I believe, it's a separate software sale.

I assume that 360 software sales were probably around 15-16 million (with an average game price of £30).

Ye, i think that there is a possibility that Wii 3rd party games sold more than 11.9 million units in the UK in 2009.

According to ToTheGame.com (unless i have counted very wrong), there were about 229 3rd party releases for the Wii in 2009. ToTheGame.com lists these games as "UK/Euro" and not "UK only" though, so maybe not every game got released in the UK, but maybe it is safe to assume that there were something around 200 3rd party releasess for the Wii in the UK in 2009 at least? ToTheGame.com lists that there were about 131 1st and 3rd party releases combined for the PS3 in "UK/Euro" in 2009. The same goes for the PS3 games, maybe not all of these games got released in the UK, but maybe it is safe to assume that most of them also were released in the UK? :)

Do we know the PS3 and Wii UK install base numbers for 2009? The latest numbers i can find with a Google search is that the Wii was nearly 6 million units in the week ending 7th November 2009. And that the PS3 installbase was on 2.2 million units sometime around June or July 2009.

http://gamerinvestments.com/video-g...11/13/uk-wii-install-base-nearly-six-million/

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/34906/Official-UK-installed-base-tops-24m

If the Wii UK install base were nearly 6 million in early November, i think that the installbase had reached 6 million units by the end of 2009. The PS3 hardware sales went up after the release of the PS3 Slim and after the pricedrop, so maybe the PS3 UK install base is somewhere around 3 million now?

It is hard to say for sure without knowning how much the 1st party Wii software sold though, but seeing that the Wii UK install base is probably something around 3 million larger compared to the PS3 UK install base, and that there seemed to have been released about 100 more 3rd party games for the Wii in 2009 compared to the PS3, i would say that these are factors that makes it a reasonable possibility that Wii 3rd party games sold more than PS3 1st and 3rd party games combined in 2009 :)

Army of Two 2 has a chance at claiming #1 next week.

I'm very tempted to say that the 360 userbase, in the UK at least, are more software-orientated. The vast majority of PS3 owners I know bought the console either A) because it was the new PlayStation or B) because they wanted to play Pro Evo on it. So those gamers are mainly brand orientated and less interested in buying several games a year. That can be BS as well because the sheer userbase size of the 360 could account for the higher rate of software sales for it. All I have to ask is whether or not the UK will be a 360 territory or a PS3 one.

going by the quite big gap, would it be reasonable to assume that WII-third-party games have sold more units in 2009 than PS3 first- and thirdparty combined ?
Its not a safe bet at all though, considering what is charting for the Wii...

UK 360 software unit sales for 2009: 16.2m
UK PS3 software unit sales for 2009: 10.4m

UK Install bases as of July 2009:

360: 3.9m
PS3: 2.2m

Thus based on these numbers 360 had a 2009 tie-ratio of 4.15 titles, PS3 of 4.73.

Of course, the hardware numbers above are only to the middle of the year and leave out the big Q3/Q4 season. So each platform's actual 09 tie ratio will be lower. But one might expect them to be proportionately similar to the figure calced above, which actually suggests higher purchasing among PS3 users*

Charts are useless for determining these things.

* however, if PS3 hardware performed better vs 360 in this latter half of the year, I'd expect it's tie ratio to be proportionately lower vs these numbers...but I'd be fairly confident in saying that the ratios would at least be similar. If and when we get ltd figures for the uk up to the end of 09 we'll be able to do a better calc of 2009 purchasing per user of each platform...but I would be surprised if they're very different.

And I thought godhandicson is the last holdout believer in the "Xbox 360 software beast" myth. Every time we've gotten total software numbers (and not just top-XX charts), from any market in the world, they've always shown that PS3 owners buy games at the exact same rate.

Just Dance....wow...

It can stay in stock more easily in the reduced post Xmas market so will rise up the chart as more people get it back in.

Shocked that Bayonetta didn't sell more - it was pretty pushed over here. Guess people would rather play with friends than play by themselves. May do better in 2nd week as positive WOM spreads and snow melts.

Interesting to note that MW2 is 3rd best selling game ever in the Uk now. Should take 2nd at some point - I forget what GTA:SA was at last public announcement, but I'm sure someone has it noted down!

The first week of 2010 shows no change at the top with Activision Blizzard taking a 9th consecutive week at No1 with ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (-41%).

The title is currently the 3rd biggest game ever in terms of UK history unit sell-through – it actually managed this feat last week, so after just 8 weeks on sale. For the record the current No1 is Nintendo’s ‘Dr Kawashima’ on DS, released in June 2006 and No2 is Rockstar/Take 2’s ‘GTA San Andreas’, initially released on PS2 in November 2004 (Xbox and PC in 2005). Back to the present and Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit Plus’ climbs 3 places to No2 (-43%), Ubisoft’s Wii ‘Just Dance’ climbs 4 places to a best-ever position at No3 (-41%) and Nintendo remain at No4 with ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (-54%). There are only 2 new entries this week and both make the Top 10, starting with Sega’s ‘Bayonetta’ (360/PS3) at No5. The other is THQ’s ‘Darksiders’ (360/PS3) debuting at No8.

Same with Wii. And the latest charts show good numbers. Wii's 9 titles are distributed quite favourably on those charts. Dislike that we get no numbers, 1) because we can't make any conclusions, and 2) because people make illogical conclusions based on the arbitrary "how many games in the top 40" thing.

It's why I've given up. I can't be bothered to guess what sold the best to be in some leader board of bored people, so a brief commentary on the games at the top of the tree and those moving in interesting ways is all I do.

We get enough numbers in the UK to be dangerous, enough for people to draw conclusions about most things if they make enough presumptions...
Until we get the numbers needed to, for example, state and statistically test the hypothesis that the PS3 sales are the same as the x360 sales then it's really just for entertainment value, and not worth arguing about.

From the recent MCV report we know the following:
The PS3 sold 974k in 2009 (up from 955k in 2008) and the total is now 2.8 million.
The total hardware consoles sold was 4 million, that leaves 3.026 million between Wii and 360.
We should know the other consoles' hardware sometime this week.

Buying at the same rate means more total software sold on the 360 (in the UK), hence the "software beast" thingy.

Here's the software units sold in 2009 (2008):

Wii Software Units: 18,100,000 (20,100,000)
360 Software Units: 16,200,000 (14,900,000)
NDS Software Units: 14,600,000 (20,100,000)
PS3 Software Units: 11,900,000 (10,400,000)
PC- Software Units: 6,200,000 (8,500,000)
PSP Software Units: 2,800,000 (4,100,000)
PS2 Software Units: 1,900,000 (5,700,000)

and their corresponding value:

360 Software Value: £459,000,000 (£441,000,000)
WII Software Value: £392,000,000 (£481,000,000)
PS3 Software Value: £342,000,000 (£334,000,000)
NDS Software Value: £266,000,000 (£366,000,000)
PC- Software Value: £91,000,000 (£117,000,000)
PSP Software Value: £44,000,000 (£70,000,000)
PS2 Software Value: £25,000,000 (£92,000,000)

Hmmm. A heavy element of this, and often cited element, is the whole theory of 360 owners buying more on average than users on the other systems. As in Meus's post. That descriptor's not grown out of just absolute sales, but also thoughts and theories about the amount of software 360 owners buy on average individually.

edit - thanks for the updated PS3 data. That means the 09 tie ratio for PS3 was 3.7.
