Secret of Mana multiplayer with friends usually degenerated into each one of us trying to pull up our menu so we could call Flamie or use the Midget Hammer (?) on each other first :lol

Explain "buggy mess", if you please.
Just because a game is a buggy mess, doesn't mean it's not fun to play (especially with 3 ppl).

I was just about to make a thread about this! Too slow~
A turtle or a sloth is slow, you had 10 hours to make a more appealing thread but were too lazy to make one. :p

I was attending a friend's birthday stuff, and had lots of school stuff before it.

I thought I had... but I'm starting to think that I managed to overlook it at some point. It may be the one Square SNES game I don't own a copy of...

I've played it a million times and the only bugginess that comes to mind is when characters disappear into walls and stuff around the gaps you use the whip to cross. And I guess sometimes Neko appearing/disappearing when he goes off screen

Or, you know, how you can get the Mana Sword about 10 minutes after acquiring the flammie drum.

I don't have a Wii, but I urge you all to BUY THIS GAME. I just replayed this recently and despite the bugs, it is a great game, even solo.

Nice OP.

That doesn't affect the game at all and you have to read up to learn about it. Also, you can't get the Mana Sword otherwise, right? I always thought it was a neat secret

I played and beat it when it released with 2 player co-op. Dont remember any major bugs though. Certainly not enough to call it a buggy mess. Then again I was young and we probably werent looking for bugs and glitches anyway.

I have never played secret of mana and I am confused.

does the game come with bugs from birth ( was like that when it first came out ) or is the rom in the virtual console buggy??

I've played through my SNES cartridge probably about ten times, and the only bug I've encountered is that after not playing it for several years, one of my saves was corrupted. Perhaps the battery is going, but I've never experienced any other major bugginess in the game.

True. Also, technically the "rapid fire magic" is a bug that can be game breaking since you can launch in to it at the start of any boss fight and their dead before they even get the chance to move.

The original is by far the buggiest top tier console game I've ever played. In particular, the collision detection system frequently doesn't make any sense. Also there are very strange issues with getting the highest level weapons that I have never understood.

Yeah, that's a problem, though I always considered that just poor design.

Enemies always, or almost always, make a clear dodging or blocking animation, or you'll hear a sound effect to know the attack registered but didn't "hit" or whatever (unless an enemy is in the "invincible" phase after being hit). I played through SoM a couple of years ago mindful of collision detection complaints and it just seemed to me that people weren't paying enough attention.

It just always seemed strange to me that Secret of Mana gets such a bad rap for being buggy when it never seemed that buggy to me, and there are higher profile games with worse bugs. For example, the Relm Sketch glitch in FF3 can have far more catastrophic results than anything you'll ever find in SoM

Actually you can get it "legit". Enemies in
The Mana Fortress drop Orbs for all weapons randomly
. I've managed to get all the weapons up to level 9.

I thought that was
for every weapon except the word. I thought for the sword you had to cast Mana Magic during the final battle.

Was I the only one to have played the game legitimately without exploiting bugs? Shame on you all!

I love exploiting bugs and breaking games. I wish I knew about this stuff before I spent all that time maxing out all my magic :(

Heh, well it might have been the intention of the game designers for that, but I guess the rare drops were glitched to include Sword Orbs, because that's the way I first got the ninth Sword Orb.

I picked this up this morning. It's going to be so fun to revisit this (haven't replayed it as much as most older RPGs). It helps that the VC release makes it so much easier to play with 3 people than the SNES release ever was.

Fun fact I learned today that I never knew about back in the day: in any area where you have your weapons out (ie. not in towns), hold the L and A buttons while pressing R 39 times, then release L and A and press R one more time. Oh, Nasir, you card.

My friend and I had so many conspiracy theories involving these when we were kids. :lol

Also, does anyone remember the glitchy white block behind the house in the ice village that can only be seen when calling Flamie? Yeah, we just *knew* that it was a secret door that you could somehow reach.

Actually, we were convinced that the mysterious Shadow Zero was involved...

Good times.

If this is the case I will paypal you cash to buy EarthBound off of eBay.

So I played the GBA Sword of Mana and never did finish it even though I did like it, how does Secret of Mana compare? I never had the privilege of playing it back in the day

My problem with the collision detection was mainly the bosses. Most are very large on the screen, but seem to require you to hit a much smaller target. I still love the game, though.

JohnTinker: IMNSHO Sword of Mana is utter tripe. The original GB game was far better.
Sword and Secret are only marginally related. Get Secret of Mana. It may be a buggy mess, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't hold up quite as well as nostalgia is making me believe, but nonetheless: it's an awesometastic game that everyone should have played at least once in his/her lifetime.

If anyone is reading this thread and being deterred by all the talk of bugs... please, just ignore it! The game is magical, you will still love the hell out of it even if you encounter a few bugs.

Heh? I don't remember this game being buggy when I played it 2p back in the day? Though I guess I wasn't looking for bugs (or do they show up only for 3p?).

Anyway, Wii is only an eventuality now that this game is out.

Definitely picking this one up tomorrow, one of the best games of all time and defining moments of the 16-bit era.

That aside, gotta say the first thing that popped into my mind: That music that plays when you're
chasing the Flying Fortress around, it's when the sky's still blue. I can't remember it exactly and never knew what the title was, but it's some of my favorite game music ever. Anybody remember what that was called?

Spoiler'd just in case anyone out there hasn't played this god amongst games.

Which brings me to my final point until I start my playthrough: If you own a Wii and do not purchase this VC title, you will be assailed by a midget bearing headbuns and an indiscernible gender with boomerangs, whips, or tiny fists, or by a silent sworded protagonist and a comely 16 bit sprite representation of a blonde girl with a huge axe.

Fair warning.

What did you guys name your characters?

Mine:

Hero - Link (yeah, as a kid I wasn't as creative as I am now :p )

Girl - Darla (My friend and I couldn't think of any girl's names... so we ended up naming her after his mom. :lol )

Sprite - Cork (I honestly can't remember where this one came from, but it's a pretty badass name if I do say so myself!)

Every time I replay the game I just HAVE to use the same names for my characters. In my mind those ARE their names. :O

ahhh, back to the days of positioning my characters perfectly in the wind temple to most efficiently level Lynda's spells.

also was a bit devastated to get it back after loaning to a mate and finding the one game save he wrote over was my maxed one (although I never got the sword to 9 save by using magic).

only recently heard about the 'porno book' too.

Okay, question time.. could someone tell me...

a) The history/background of Square's "The Secret of Evermore" -- I thought I heard it was made by a Square USA team.
b) Was the aforementioned game released in Japan?

I played about five minutes of it, and I know the general consensus is that it's poor, but I'm curious as to whether it's odd enough for square Enix to let NOA put on the VC.

I'm going to hop on board with what has been said. If you haven't experienced Secret of Mana, 800 points is practically free. This game is - AWESOME!

Funny thing, I just bought Castle Crashers on Friday to play with my friends and then this drops. Oh well, I can't complain :D

Quick question...

It's probably been about 4 years since I've last played Secret of Mana. Will this be playable/enjoyable using 3 Wii Remotes? I can't remember if SoM utilized all 6 buttons on the SNES controller.

If not, can I just use 3 Gamecube controllers? I never bought any of those 'classic' Wii controllers.

Thanks!
