Patreon updates Terms of Service to clamp down on adult content

Really, if this isn't already a thing, that's a massive amount of demand left...unsatisfied.

Wish I had the balls
I think the biggest issue is probably going to be the payment processing.

Like was mentioned, PayPal had already made an exception for Patreon's adult content creators. You'd have to do something similar with a porn-specific sister site, which might be difficult if you're attempting to allow material that is prohibited on Patreon.

But man, the more I look at these terms, the more misogynistic it feels. It hits women hardest.

I mean it simply doesn't make sense. If you're paying money to wack it, you're not being exploited, you're just spending money on something you like. Nobody is forcing you to spend money on sex-related things unless you have some kind of serious impulse control issue that's beyond the scope of Patreon or whatever service is used for camming these days.

It's exploitative in the sense that literally every transaction that occurs in the world is exploitative.
If I had to elaborate on my point of view, I'd say that I agree in flagging such content as mature, I don't agree with banning it altogether, just don't pass that kind of modeling as if it were not related to sex and provocativeness. We can all agree there I guess?

I feel like a lot of the cosplayers will be fine because it means they just have to bring whatever content is skirting over the line back a bit. The folks creating actual erotica and erotic games are going to be the ones who pay in the end.

I have no qualms with tagging and hiding shit. Its not like people find NSFW Patreon pages through their search.

I'm very far away from being a prude, heck I find being a prude ridiculous, but it's not hard to see people are exploiting sex (or the illusion of it) and simply using cosplay as a means to grow an audience that will happily (sadly in my opinion) hand over their money, it's the reason I don't like people like Jessica Nigri, but I realize I'm in the minority here.

God forbid people do what they want with their bodies.

At first I kinda just shrugged but then I realized some people I know kinda make their living on lewd art.

This blows.

EDIT: I see if they flag it as adult content they will be okay. Which most do already. Suppose it's not as bad.

Edit: All of my subs are affected by this change. Being able to support some of these folks on a reliable monthly basis has been great. It's been a good way to support the folks creating content I and others consume, why should it matter that that content is pornographic.

It's a a sht regressive policy that accomplishes nothing of any note besides forcing creators away from the site.

This is a creepy and shitty policy.

I encourage everyone who can to file support requests criticising it. Every avenue you can.

Both of these things were already in place before the announcement of these terms. You could not search for Adult material via the site and Adult material was already tagged as Adult/NSFW.

The actual terms announcement implies a straight out ban on pornographic material from Adult Content Creators such as Court and Abby, Hidori Rose, Miss K, Miss Stella, etc who produce NSFW video content.

I follow an artist on dA who apparently has a Patreon that was pretty close to allowing her to forgo her day job. She had an amazing output of work (a highly detailed digital painting almost everyday, something that would take me a week to bother finishing at least), which I suppose meant that she already had. Hopefully this doesn't screw her over.

What is taken to them? Patreon doesn't owe anything to anyone, its the creators that are using it. I guess Patreon isnt happy that there's people promoting really questionable stuff on their platform.

Actually they take a cut from all the patreon creators so they should be defending the people that help them pay the bills.
I was talking about the Japanese version of Patreon, many artists who released their work for free on Pixiv and sold doujin at events like Comiket moved to this service where you pay a monthly amount to support them, while westerners who did the same relied on Patreon.

Don't ask me for links though, I'm at the university at the moment :p

When you can please let me know what this is, because I know quite a few people who are going to be willing to switch to it.

After reading the actual ToS updates little bit more in detail god this is a shitty update. Especially the part where people won't be able to use commissions as tier rewards now.

I really have to wonder what Patreon considers to be porn. Just depictions of sex? I'm a patron of a few artists who don't really depict sex in their work, nor do they really depict nudity that often, but their art would be considered sexy.

Hmmm. Well, a new service needs to open up if Patreon's going to screw these people over, and soon!

I think it's fine. But what about nude Overwatch characters or whatever made by digital artists. Is this porn or just erotica or something like that?

Lastly, you cannot sell pornographic material or arrange sexual service(s) as a reward for your patrons. You can't use Patreon to raise funds in order to produce pornographic material such as maintaining a website, funding the production of movies, or providing a private webcam session.

I'm not sure if artwork falls under this stipulation but either way they really need to actually review their ToS to make it clear because this sounds like a bunch of horseshit to me. Plenty of my friends who draw adult content have pledge tiers for monthly art requests/commissions, adult or not, and for many of those artists, that's their main source of income and the most attractive incentive to pledge.

I'm less versed or concerned about how this affects the "real life porn" side of things on Patreon, but as an artist, I see nothing good about most of these new regulations.

Now I know why I couldn't find porn via the search. I subscribe to one erotic patreon, but I don't remember how I found it.

I was under the impression that paypal was against Adult Content in the first place or did this change?

They are. That's why Patreon was such a good deal for artists who draw adult content, because Patreon managed to make a deal with PayPal to allow adult content through their service, and it became a great bridge because of it.

And now even that is coming with way too many shitty caveats.

Once they moved from talking about "fans supporting your work" to "managing your business", the writing was on the wall.

Also, the new logo is still stupid and awful. Way to throw away brand recognition.

Ah I see, thanks.

Could some of these changes come from the deal then? I remember that in the beginning of paypal that they were saying they wanted to be family friendly and be used by everyone. A bit weird to have made an exception only for patreon.

I have zero issues with the website changing its policies though. Whether it's because the owner wants to change the image or the site and/or prepare for an IPO.

My only issue is that if they want to clean up their act so to speak by monitoring their content they will have to expand their ban outside of pornography but also to the alt-right and racists on there.

It took a solid decade to get people to convince people into finally support artists with a semblance of a living wage, and now it all goes out the window with one quick TOS revision.

There's gold in them thar hills if a new payment subscription service can establish itself as an immediate replacement.

Isn't Patreon still the go-to place for Alt-Right Youtube talking heads to monetize their hate-speech? Why doesn't Patreon solve that giant fucking issue first?

There should be a stated difference between depictions of sexual activity (as porn) and "I do paintings of attractive naked people", which is, at least in the world of art, not really pornography in the same way. Unless London's National Gallery should cover some of its paintings in the black bags like they were dirty magazines in corner shops. Nipples and penises! The horror!

I don't have much personal sympathy for the long-suffering fetish artist et al that will once again have to find another place to sell their wares.

i mean, do you honestly care if thats what i look at even? why should anyone care about artists making that content, its not like they are forcing you to consume it. obviously keep it off publicly viewable spaces but it seems like more than that

Nope look at it all, it's fake so I don't care. That said the rules look reasonable and I understand why Patreon would want to shy away from things like that. The general reaction in this thread makes it sound like Patreon is taking away all adult content.

Well damn, as funny as I find all of this, you have an extremely valid point.... Dangerous fucking nazi rhetoric? Or models dressed as Chun Li? Interesting that this draws the focus rather than that...

Someone makes more than Sakimichan? Or would she fall under adult content?

Never heard of Sakamichan, but my hot take from taking a brief look at her Patreon is that the title contains Yaoi/Yuri/ Nude, and her previews have a NSFW section. I'd say that at the very least she'd have to tag it, but depending on their definition Yaoi/Yuri/Nudity could easily qualify as pornographic material.

Maybe I'm interpreting the rules incorrectly but it sounds like all "pornographic" material is banned. I'm not too familiar with Patreon, but I would guess that most of what people consider "Adult Content" could fall under the umbrella of pornographic especially wrt nude cosplayers and more NSFW artists.

I imagine it would be considered adult content.
