Pikmin 3 |OT| Starvation, Slavery, and Savage Creatures in a Cute, Colorful Package

Beat the game last week. That final boss stage is golden. One of their best final bosses in their entire history. A couple of side thoughts.

-Does everyone know about Piki'min Snap? I'm sure everyone knows about the picture taking functionality of the Kopad. But did anyone combine that with the "Go Here" function?
The character travels to his destination and the whole time you can view the journey in first person. Really gives you that one rails feel of being in the Zero-One.

-Co-Op mission mode is ace. That is a known thing. But an interesting thing happens during play that I feel is pretty unique to this game and mode. Managing 3 characters at once in a tricky task, a task that is made easier with the help of a buddy. Things get interesting when both players start swapping in-between characters and you quickly have to try and access what it is your brother had Charlie doing all the way over here before the Alf you left behind gets into trouble. When things really start picking up, it almost has a Wario Ware feel. Your friend crying out the prompt "go help out Charlie" you switch characters (the hard cut), then in a flash you're wondering why a large Spotty Bulborb is casing you down.

-Decided to do another run through the Story Mode (this time to greatly reduce my final day count) but had a neat idea. Instead of doing it like I'd do every other game (start from the beginning, worry about every little small mistake and trudge across the game until I reach the end and find out after all my toll I still messed up on a ton of small thing) I decided to play the game backwards. Start on the final level, get it down to an good completion time and go backwards. Doing it this way, I can approach the task from a very informed angle. Seem like the way to go.

Yessss! DLC coming today!

External HDD. Should I unplug it so it installs to the internal memory? For some reason it keeps installing on the external, despite having 18 GB free on the internal.

Yes, try installing the update without the external HDD

Is there a way to throw your teammates farther? It seems to me that several items are unreachable with my current throwing range/height.

Nope. Your throw range for partners is pretty limited, especially vertically. Sometimes you might be approaching something from the wrong angle, though.

DLC is available.

You first get an update to Pikmin 3, then when that's installed, you get the extra missions available with a link to the eShop. Haven't played them yet. Will wait until the weekend to play with my eldest who is Pikmin obsessed! It's his birthday too. I'll tell him Nintendo sent him this as a present.

Okay. So did anyone play the DLC? The first level is free. Nearly platinumed it. It is the same level as the first mission. Are the others rehashes as well?

I haven't played this game for a couple of weeks, so I've really got to change that this weekend.

I know it'll be tough to put it down when I start it back up again though...

I bought this game and a Wii U a few weeks ago and and finally delving into it properly. However, I've kind of reached a point where I can't seem to progress without Blue Pikmin and can't tell which area the blue onion is in. Could someone please give me an Idea of where I should be looking?

Story will give them to you, so you're probably not stuck.

It's basically impossible to miss the Blue Pikmin if you trigger the correct plot event, which is really just a matter of finding and beating the bosses in each area. What's the last significant thing you've done?

Just got the DLC and played through each level once. As far as I can tell, these missions are much, much more difficult and complicated. Some pretty tough enemies, plus the fact that you need to make smart use of the Candypop Flowers really add to the challenge.

I can see myself coming back to these regularly

Yes, the maps might start from the same basis as the old ones, but there are new enemies, new bridges, new pikmins distribution and a lot more complexity than in the first levels. You must take advantage of Candypop flowers and nectar to get the maximum out of the missions.

Decided to finish up the game finally. At the end and the ending fight is one of the worst types I feel. I can't stand the setup that's used here. I'm pushing myself but I'm losing so many Pikmin when I've been pretty good on that front through the rest of the game. Should I let
the blob creature capture Olimar and just run through the rest of the areas setting things up? Then go back for him and race through or try the next day?
? I'm trying to do everything at once and I wonder if that's my problem and why I'm hating it.

It took me like three days to do it, there is no rush. And yeah, I think you can actually get away with just letting it take Olimar. But what I did was run brittany around the loop in the second room for the whole day every day, with olimar being carried behind her, while alph and charlie cleared out the rest of the map. Just use "go here" to walk her half way around the loop, when you hear her or one of the other captains go "oh shit he's gonna get me" swap back to her, and direct her around half the loop again. Repeat for a few days until it's cleared to your liking, just make sure to have brittany call back the Pikmin carrying olimar at the end of each day so you don't leave them behind. Once the map's cleared out, walk her free to the end.

I last thing I did was get the pink pikmin. I can't remember the last boss I fought.

I'm guessing the last one you fought was the giant sand-dick, in the jungle. There's a boss in the autumn area, the one where you got those Pink pikmin. Gotta keep exploring around there, it's at the top of a huge tree in the center of the second area of the map.

Watch the 10-day run for fun. It's amazing. Always the exact amount of Pikmin needed for each task at hand. Not a single death.

Cut it down to 15 after some retries. I haven't looked to youtube for strategies (yet) but I can't believe that it's been done in 10. If I redo some things, I can maybe get it down to 13, but 10 is just insane.
WOW! I can't imagine finishing this game in 15 days/8 hours. It took me around 15~17 hours (Wii U daily log says I invested 29 hours) and lost a total of 36 Pikmin (14 during the final boss).

Finished the game and luckily I didn't have to lure away the creature. I was at the end of the area anyway. Didn't even realize it.

Overall the game was really enjoyable save for the ending boss. I get what they were attempting with it but the area was far to small. I never felt I controlled the flow of the battle but instead was constantly reacting. I think I might be able to fight it better now that I know what I'm up against but my Pikmin perished number doubled fighting the damn thing. I went into that entire area at around 312 and I came out of it 661!!! I think that more then anything bothers me. I tried my best to not lose Pikmin as I played. I almost never left one behind at the end of the day. I even redid a a few days when that happen. When they died it was usually to a boss or a mini-boss when I couldn't recall them in time or didn't know the boss would speed up or the one creature that has big eyes that would eat them if I wasn't really careful but that rarely happen. Pathing issues sometimes got in the way. The deaths were spread out. So many happen in the end in such a short amount of time though.

If I leave out that area with the
Plasm Wraith
and just look at everything else from area design, fruit collecting, normal enemies and bosses then I really, really enjoyed the game. The end sours me on it a little though so I might have to give it a few days to let that pass. Or just continue to play the mission mode.

Which does bring me to a question. The world wide time for finishing Armored Mawdad boss is
14 seconds
. How is that even possible!?

It's one of the very few slight annoyances with pikmin. Basically you have to go to a new area to find the blue onion. But there is always that feeling of 'should I go to a new area as soon as I unlock it, or should I try and get more fruit in this level first?' Along with realising that your progress on the current level will be limited at some point because you don't have XX coloured pikmin

Cheers :) I've had many restarts, I should say. Basically I just replayed every day 5-10 times or so, each time trying to outdo myself. As soon as you get three captains, you can do A LOT in a day. I really think the fun in this game comes from replaying it and fine-tuning your strategy. Next time I think I'll go for 12 days.

(I recommend watching the 10-day run, it is incredible)

Throw Pikmin at him and he'll shake them off. Then destroy the blobs he throws around by chucking more Pikmin at them. When he creates a big golden ball it'll change into a cube with some element protecting it. Use reds for fire, blues for water, yellows for electricity and rocks for glass. Use flying Pikmin when he goes up into the air.

I found him pretty easy compared to the swamp boss. I could not beat that guy for the life of me.

My problem is running away from it with Olimar while trying to find a new route to the ship when there are enemies, unbuilt brigdes, water, and stupid walls in the way.

Are you having trouble escorting the captain?
1st thing I'll say, just incase, is that you can take your time and complete the stage over the course of a few days. Any progress you make with regards to puzzles will remain. That includes enemies killed.

Remember to use bombs to slow down the blob/create shortcuts. The shortcuts will stay on following days.

Set 10 Flying Pikmin to carry Olimar and remember to use the gamepad map to keep control of Brittany. The blop will follow her while she's in command of the Pikmin carrying Olimar. There's a few areas that let you run around in circles, so use that to your advantage.

Finally, if those methods fail you, there is a way to bypass the entire stage, but that's cheating so I'll tell you if you're really desperate.

I've been replaying Pikmin 2 recently, as I never finished that game and thought now might be a good time to do so. i was amazed by how dated it looked and played compared to Pikmin 3. I mean I knew Pikmin 3 was superior graphically but I never appreciated that until I played 2 again. Those people who have been saying it's just an upressed Wii game are crazy.

Come on people, spoiler tag those details, not everyone reached those sections and frankly it's more fun if you go to them not knowing what's going on.

Yea I found Pikmin 1 and 2 for super cheap soon after finishing 3. And that got me thinking, had I played those games 1st, I'm not sure if I would've played 3. 1 was pretty fun, but kinda frustrating and level design wasn't very interesting to me. 2 I actually couldn't finish it was annoying me so much. Parts of it, like the enemy variety were great, but the caves completely ruined the game for me. I kinda liked the initially, but soon they just started pissing me off. And once the
Water Wraith
was introduced, I was done.

Kinda glad I started with 3...

And yea, people saying it's only a slight upgrade are nuts.

you let olimar get captured. then get all your captains together and start making your way through the level like you would any other. May take a couple days.

when you reach the end, go grab Olimar and just autopilot his carriers to the finish line.

easy peasy.

Can I just say, these new Mission Mode levels are awesome! I was a little disappointed when I heard they were remixes, but they feel like completely new levels. And they are HARD! I barely managed to get Platinum on the 1st stage and the rest were lucky Gold or Silver medals.

Yeah, I feel pretty much exactly the same. I'm also going to download the rest pretty soon. I wish more people would talk about it. They seemed great.

Pikmin 3 was my 1st time playing any Pikmin game and it was perfectly fine. There's a handful of very small references to previous games, but nothing even remotely important.

I didn't know what to expect from the game and it ended up being my GOTY, so have fun. And remember to try out Mission Mode and Bingo Battle after finishing the game. They'll definitely be your favourite things forever...

It's probably the best game on Wii U right now; story in Pikmin is minimal and pretty self-contained, especially this one because it stars new protagonists. Most people I've seen who played this game first feel like they'd been missing out after playing it, it's definitely the most polished Pikmin game.

I hadn't played any Pikmin before either and I found Pikmin 3 to be one of the best titles from Nintendo in a while. It's pretty amazing! So the answer is YES!

The 1st new Mission is a cake walk compared to the rest. My mind is still blown over how complicated these missions are. I seriously can't wait to see what they do with new Battle Enemies stages.
And I really can't wait to see them start introducing brand new areas after the remixes.

Yeah it is pretty good, there's no need to have played any other of the series from a story telling point of view. Gameplay wise, it only help you catch on with the concepts quickier, but its really not needed.

I also recommend Wonderful 101 for your new Wii U.

Nintendo doesn't make games where you need to have played the older games.

There are some.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance > Radiant Dawn.

Golden Sun series too.

Finally 100%'d the story mode (all fruits + notes). Took around 24h in-game time.
Also got all platinum for the boss challenges. The
Plasm Wraith
was the hardest one by far, but it felt so good getting it. I assume it is definitely easier with Wiichuk, though.

Now going for platinum in the other missions. From what I have played, the DLC challenges are a notch harder than the standard ones, so it may take a while.

Great, great game. Even though it doesn't have as much content as Pikmin 2, the leaderboards makes up a bit for it.

Ugh, that I am not looking forward to.

I still can't get platinum on the first stage of Battle enemies, so i just gave up. It is waaaaay too time consuming to beat down beady long legs, and too hectic to do it while battling other enemies. I'll stick to collect treasure thank you very much :p

But yeah the remixes look great. keep'em coming!

this isn't quite doing what pikmin 2 did for me. i think that one will remain as my favorite in the series. however, i appreciate what pikmin 3 is doing, and i like it second best. it's also doing something strange where i'm getting really nostalgic while playing it. it's not so much because it's pikmin- i don't think i have any particular attachment to that, but because the simplicity of it is so endearing.

and maybe nostalgia plays into it a little too.
the final goal being that you are rescuing olimar, and as the player, reuniting with the protagonist from nine years ago, it's a sweet touch in a way

39 days, 15:14 on the game clock.

i remember when i beat pikmin 2, and i was sure they would continue the franchise. sales, while not super high, were good enough for a sequel, and it had certainly was a better game than its predecessor. i can't believe it took nine years to get a sequel.

and now that it has come and gone, i think it's a satisfying end to the series. while pikmin 3 plays more similarly to pikmin 2 than the first, all three games are very different in how they approach strategy. knowing how nintendo has mixed up each game substantially, i would wonder just how a pikmin 4 would shake things up.

kudos to nintendo for making good use of the gamepad with this game too. it's not life-changing, but it is fairly integral to planning out successful days, and very easy to interface with. aside from that, the presentation of receiving transmissions from other crew members was a very nice touch.

and it's such a bizarre title. adorable and frightening at the same time. a big adventure on a small scale. i had forgotten so much about what i loved about this series. i am sad to see it go if this is the end, but i am so glad we had at least one more pikmin. it was worth the wait.
