Any word on if this is IPS? I would assume so, but you never know.

The price is pretty competitive with 24" PC IPS panel monitors.

Not really, if anything it's a huge help for split screen gaming on a smaller display. Though I definitely want to see that type of tech move into larger screens eventually.

Bingo!.. With a screen that size the split screen mode is a god send.
Should have included a 2nd pair of glasses though :/

Maybe if it was a little bigger or a little cheaper, hasn't quite hit my sweet spot yet. However I love the full screen offline multiplayer option so I will be following these displays closely.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
So in 3D mode you'll get half the resolution?

When he announced it on stage he said "view in 1080p HD OR 3D".

I don't think the HDMI has enough bandwidth to properly support 1080p 3D.

Sony Computer Entertainment Announces 3D Display to Further Expand the World of 3D on PlayStation®3, Hitting Worldwide Market in Fall 2011

Display Features a Special Mode Where Players Can View Individual, Unique, Full-Screen Images of Gameplay When Playing Two-Player Games

TOKYO, June 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) today announced that it will release a 24-inch 3D Display available this fall in Japan, North America, Europe/PAL territories, and Asian countries/regions. For North America, the 3D Display comes bundled with 3D Glasses, an HDMI cable and the highly anticipated Resistance 3 title from Insomniac Games for PlayStation®3 (PS3®) at an attractive recommended retail price (RRP) of US$499.99. 3D Glasses included in the 3D Display bundle will also be sold separately, concurrently with the 3D Display , at RRP of US$69.99 in USA. Through the introduction of this new product, PS3 users will have easy access to all of their 3D entertainment by simply connecting PS3 to the 3D Display.

The 3D Display features a 24-inch full HD LCD display and, in an industry first for its size*1, the display adopts quad-speed frame sequential display technology that is able to minimize crosstalk*2 distortion, delivering stunningly realistic 3D viewing experiences. The 3D Display supports several 3D formats, including "frame packing," "top and bottom" and "side by side," which will offer users various options for enjoying 3D.

The 3D display offers a broad range of other attractive features, including:

Full high-definition display

The display features high contrast (5000:1), wide viewing angle (176 degree) high response time (4ms GTG average), delivering users with crisp high-quality image in stereoscopic 3D, as well as in 2D.

Special feature for two-player mode

Designed to deliver the ultimate gaming experience only possible on the 3D Display, it utilizes new, proprietary technology, that allows two players playing a multi-player game to see individual, unique, full-screen images of gameplay using the bundled 3D Glasses and supported software title.

High quality sound

The 3D Display adopts stereo 2ch+subwoofer speakers that can generate a broad range of sound from low pitch to high pitch. Featuring stereo 2ch incorporated on the side of the screen, right and left sides, and subwoofer on the backside of the screen, users can enjoy games and other entertainment content with high quality and dynamic sound.

Slim, sleek design

Adopting edge-LED lighting as the backlight, the 3D Display is 35 mm thin (the thickest part) and features a curved line form factor that is both stylish and unobtrusive in living spaces, complementing the sleek design of the PS3 system.

3D Glasses

The 3D Glasses come with a rechargeable lithium ion battery to enable quick and efficient charging time. A three minute charge results in three hours of use, while a 45 minute charge provides 30 hours of use.

Versatility for the supported devices

Along with 3D Glasses, the 3D Display comes bundled with an HDMI cable to provide high-definition 3D entertainment out of the box. The display adopts two HDMI input connectors, allowing users to connect the display to the PS3 system as well as to other HDMI-supported device*3. Some devices including PlayStation®2 and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) can be connected to the 3D Display by using a component input connector.

Other features

With quick start-up mode, users will only have to wait for one second after pushing the power button to boot the display. The 3D Display also offers a power saving mode which shifts to auto standby if it does not receive a video signal for more than five seconds. Additionally users can utilize the separately sold BD remote control (CECH-ZRC1), incorporating infrared transmission to operate the 3D Display remotely.

Through the introduction of new peripherals, SCE will continue to further expand the PS3 platform and create a new world of computer entertainment that is only possible on PlayStation.

*1 Researched by SCE. As of June 5, 2011.

*2 Bleeding of the left and right image thus creating image ghosting

*3 The connected device needs to support stereoscopic 3D to enjoy 3D content.

They should just double the screen size and make the price $800 to $900. Then it would be extremely attractive.

Playstation 3D Display + TiVo box = Bedroom TV.

Not completely sold on the device, but I'm certainly thinking about it. Sony making a set of glasses that are multi-device compatible has the potential to create a de facto standard for 3D displays.

If they had made the bundle game Uncharted....I might have been Day 1. As-is, I'll see if I can catch a good sale during the holidays. I'll also have to see what the price/availability is for comparable TVs at that time.

Yeah, it just sets the entry point at 499. If you want a 40+ incher, you can buy one of the TVs available now that support 3D.

Having 24" monitor which I use in my bedroom for PC and all gaming needs I'm really considering this, more is better but no money and space doesn't help. If it turns out to be good I'll probably get it.

For everyone bitching that this is too small, they do sell 3DTV's you know :p This is a 3D monitor.

I don't understand, does Sony think there's a large number of people with PS3s that don't have HDtv already? If there were, it would make a lot more sense for them to spend that $499 towards a non3D 42" plasma, than it would to buy this.
Actually they think a large portion do already have an HDTV, but not a 3D one.

It's active 3D, so it's full resolution (though 720p is the limit for PS3 3D anyway)

Samsung 43D450 + 2 Pairs of Active 3D glasses (a promotion that includes all their 3D displays) is actually $499 and less online. This Playstation display is an incredibly poor value, no two ways around it. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be some garbage TN panel used in low cost PC monitors and has shit IQ. You will be able to buy high quality 50" 1080p 3D PDP's (e.g. 50ST30, 51D550) for a couple hundred more by the time this thing comes out.

Instead of comparing it to a 720p plasma TV, why not compare it to what it actually is ... a 24" 3D monitor. It's pricing is fine versus its competition.

Also, it's a VA panel - not TN. It isn't a POS and should have respectable contrast and blacks.

Value doesn't discriminate. A poor value is a poor value is a poor value. If you've got $500 to spend on a display (presumably for your PS3), it doesn't really matter how much other 3D PC monitors are. They're over priced as well by comparison.

More like "full screen size".... even if the PS3 could output 1080p in 3d mode, there is no way its going to render two sets of 1080p images.

Even if the PS3 could render two sets of 3D images, there isn't enough bandwidth in HDMI for 1080p60hz x 2. Blu-ray 3D is 24fps only for this reason. It's also why Nvidia's 3DTV Play solution for outputting from a video card to a 3DTV only supports 720p and you need to use a 3D Vision certified computer monitor to get 1080p, the 3D Vision support for PC gaming requires dual-link DVI support to work.

I know that the PS3 can only output a max of 720p in 3d ("even if the PS3 could output 1080p in 3d mode").

Its just that 720p is not what I call "full resolution".

That is a 720p TV.

The specs state that it is a VA panel, not a "garbage TN panel".

If this thing is actually competitive as a PC monitor, then there is nothing else currently available in its class. There are almost no 3D LCD monitors that support 3D for PS3. The ones from Acer have bad reviews, and the upcoming monitors from Samsung are TN panels and more expensive than the Sony.

And I think part of the point of this product is for people who don't have room for a 50" plasma screen in their dorm room.

E3 2011: Eyes-on with the Sony PlayStation 3D Display
Price is, of course, one of the biggest hangups consumers have with 3D HDTVs -- if, of course, they like 3D technology at all -- so naturally, a $499.99 3D-enabled display is intriguing. Though the display isn't particularly large, the picture quality was better than I was expecting.

It boasts a 5000:1 contrast ratio, 240Hz refresh rate, and a 176 degree viewing angle, delivered via an edge lit LED display, making gameplay vibrant but not over-saturated.

But of course, the PlayStation 3D Display's major marketing point is it's Two Player Mode, which allows two players to see two separate fullscreen images using stereoscopic active shutter glasses. Instead of having to view a splitscreen image, the PlayStation 3D Display overlays the images on top of each other, but each pair of glasses is synched to only one layer.

The Two Player Mode was effective, though occasionally there would be small, subtle signs of ghosting from the second player's view, but since I was unable to ascertain at what stage of development the prototype I was viewing was, it's hard to say whether or not it will be a persistent issue

Then why do LCD's outsell Plasma in general? The choice isn't quit the simple.

Regardless, you're completely missing the point. This is directed to a completely different demographic than that TV. Not everyone has room for a 42" TV. This is directed at either someone who wants a small secondary TV, say in their bedroom, or more likely, someone who wants something that doubles as a monitor. Think desk or dorm room. Even if you did have the room, a 720p Plasma makes a shit monitor.

Like it or not 'values' don't automatically scale across different use-cases.

Well, they didn't confirm either way. Given it's coupling with the Playstation brand though, I suspect that is the case.

Actually there is, though no one supports it. Or at least I should say the HDMI 1.3/1.4 spec has the bandwidth, but there aren't HDMI Tx and Rx cards that run at the necessary clockspeed (or there weren't late last year, I haven't paid attention to Silicon Image's newest parts).

If you look at the actual HDMI 1.4 specification, 1080p60 framepacking is listed under the optional formats section.

This could serve as my gaming monitor on PC. My current IPS monitor blurs in fast movement. Also would like to try out 3D. Sony usually makes good quality displays so hopefully this will be good bang for buck.

Doubtful. This is a monitor (no tuner), and is directed towards gamers (you shouldn't be using motion flow for games).

The above doesn't prevent them from including it, but it would be advertised if it was there. Plus, it would cost more.
