Prey's debut sales in the UK seem quite low

I mean we are getting a System Shock 1 remake and a System Shock 3. So there are things in the pipeline

Yeah, I mentioned those earlier as kind of the last gasp of the genre.

On the indie side there is Consortium upcoming although it is tiny budget. Obviously there is SS3 coming as well, but that's about it.

Prey doesnt strike as a particularly expensive game though.

I'm not aware of Consortium so I'll give that a look. Prey will probably decently expensive. It seems like even the most marginal AAA games cost 40m plus these days. I wonder if Nirolak or one of the other people with solid numbers has a guesstimate on the price tag here.

Because it's the worldwide standard people have been using for years.

Back when they used to incorrectly incorporate EGM/CGW/GFW scores in their listing I sent an email to the creator of metacritic. He replied back with a dickhead response and signed me up to a hundred porn mailing lists.

Wish I saved the email. Good times.

Nah, I saw trailers at the cinema, just saw one before GotG Vol 2 a few days ago. I'm pretty sure there are posters on train stations and buses.

I've not seen anything, nothing on TV, nothing on my trains, the stations. Nothing in the metro, there's no early review copies with this game anyway?

Yeah, really.

I didn't even know the damn game is out. :lol
This is where Bethesda's policy hurts. Even if some of the MIA reviews are right within the average (say 85/100) and don't change the overall picture very much, it is more exposure. I know TheRadBrad did a one hour walk through of the game, but I don't know if the game got talked about very much on other popular channels (they all seem too busy freaking out about not being able to monetize M-Rate COD content). If people on here are looking at this as quasi-stealth release, the general public isn't going to be very aware of it.

I actually saw quite a lot of ads for this game but your mileage may vary. Bethesda handled this game poorly, starting with the name and ending with their review policy. Well at least I can probably pick it up on the cheap real soon. May be even faster than Dishonored 2, that was was sold for like 25€ a month after release.

Brilliant game, lack of reviews/advertisement has'nt helped. Most modern gamers don't bother with single player games (around 20 hrs mark) until they are dirt cheap just look at the recent failures.

As somebody who does not bothered about co -op/ multi-player games, this current trend worries me. Open world games Buck this trend But they are filled with too much filler and they get boring after a while I cannot comment on Horizon or BOTW. Ghost Recon Wildlands and Mass Effect Andromeda are prime examples can of this.

It's nothing do do with it being a immersive sim, people want x amount of hours for a full price game.

I hope it's at least the end of that stupid name.

Putting Prey, Deus Ex etc in the same category as soma, Firewatch etc makes zero sense.

Prey is wonderful people. Buy it!

Who's been calling Soma and Firewatch immersive sims? Walking Sim seems like the title most thrown at Firewatch and Soma is just a horror game. Interactive drama is another genre name I've seen thrown at them.

They don't even have any elements tangentially related to an immersive sim.

I feel like the demo has hurt it.

I did not like the demo at all. It's literally the reason I won't even consider buying it. I doubt I'm the only one.

Oh I completely agree with you.

I clicked the link that was posted from Giantbomb earlier in the thread. https://www.giantbomb.com/immersive-sim/3015-5700/

They lump, BioShock, Deus Ex, Firewatch, Fallout, SOMA, Alien Isolation etc etc all in the same stupid "immersive sim" category. haha it triggers me so hard to see that.

On the indie front there's also The Signal from Tölva, which came out last month.

Noted. Thanks!

They're included in the giantbomb directory for immersive sims but I'm guessing that's just more of an error on their end than anything else.

But is the lack of marketing the only reason or do people for some reason just don't want to buy it?

Goddamn this is such a shame because this is one hell of a game and 100% worth your money if your even remotely into space/sci-fi in gaming. Would absolutely hate to see Arkane leaving eventually due to this. How did Dishonored 2 do in terms of sales?

I think it's the end of immersive sims. They're all bombas.
System Shock remake and System Shock 3 are still being developed, along with Underworld Ascendent. Might be the end for AAA involvement though. Not unless this builds up fast.

Though it could instead be the end for Bethesda doing a blanket no review copy policy. That'd be nice and is just looking really, really stupid now.

A bit off topic but are the two Shocks (remake & 3) slated for console releases at all or PC only?

Plenty of people probably have good reasons not to buy it (they want multiplayer games, don't like the setting, etc, etc), but if those people don't know the game is out, then they don't get to the point of even making that decision. That some people on GAF don't know a major Bethesda game is out screams: not enough marketing.

As GAF's resident Mirror's Edge lover, welcome to the land of DOA games, Prey fans.

Where the publishers are neglectful, the sales are paltry and your favorite game is treated like dirty laundry.

The Remake was announced for Xbox and PC initially with no PS4 version and that was a big deal with people then (they since announced they'd get it on PS4 too.)

Dunno about SS3 though, I'd imagine they'd try to get it on consoles too.

I don't think it bombed, but worse than the first.

Ah man, great. I just now checked up on the Remake because of this thread and I really liked what I saw. Excited for that now as well, another one to add to the laundry list.

Prey is already out?

Only even knew because I saw one or two Let's Plays. Sad part is it might be up my alley, but I barely knew it existed.

I wonder which immersive sim will be the Divinity or Elite of its genre? Human Revolution and Dishonored seemed like it, but then the sequels seems to burn out in terms of sales compared to those. Space sims and CRPGs came back in a major way, would suck for this subgenre to disappear again. I have high hopes for SS3 though

Weird to hear people say no marketing. I actually got kind of sick of the constant plugging on Facebook and YouTube.
Though I think very little of it included release dates, true. I guess we're just really accustomed to reviews signaling a game is out, and it seems all the major review sites decided to give Bethesda a taste of their own medicine by having no hurry whatsoever.

I added a quick note about Deus Ex: Mankind Divided's sales, since that's also an immersive sim, and a game that did badly enough to get the series killed.

It debuted at ~38K.

Don't worry, it came out in Japan last month, that'll save it

To be honest I have seen pretty much zero marketing for it, also no review copies, I'm still waiting on some before I purchase.

I've seen some let's play on YouTube. But I did not really watch them. I'm not even sure what kind of kind it is and what the game is about.

There are reviews.
The game is even sitting with a good user score, free of weird fanboy sabotage. Something you don't get to see very often!

I still hold the firm conviction that this would have got more press coverage as a new IP rather than a reboot of a game very few cared about. The name Prey couldn't be more generic, really.

Hell, I wish the real System Shock 3 could have the budget and backing from a big publisher that Prey has received for nothing.

I fear for Arkane after Dishonoured 2 and Prey. Top notch games, shit sales.

Agreed. The name is was a poor choice.

I walked into GAME on release date and there were about 50 people at the counter asking about and demanding a Switch version.

Security had to be called to calm them down.

There is no way you can release a fresh IP in this day 'n age. It will automatically fail.

Looks at Nioh and Horizon Zero Dawn.

Even a well known developer studio has to use an already existent IP, especially if the game is going to be a spiritual successor to a beloved game.

Looks at Bloodborne

Nothing Bethesda could have done here, Todd knows and understands the gaming business like no other.

I was feeling a bit ignorant having no idea the game was already out, but some of the first posts made it pretty clear it's Bethesda's fault lol.

This is pretty sad because I love Arkane's worth and at this point it almost feels like Bethesda is purposely sabotaging their projects, I mean after Dishonored 2 this is just ridiculous...

And Game Informer is still the only major outlet to post a review. They're pretty positive on it but still...

Prey is already out?

I've heard so much in the lead up to this game "oh yeah, Prey is coming out" from almost every gaming podcast I listen to (which is basically all of the podcasts from notable outlets) as well as from all of my gaming friends.

"Immersive Sim" makes me think of something like Everything or Harvest Moon. This game doesn't give me the impression that it is like Everything/Harvest Moon.

The genre name comes off as kind of smug sounding to me. "Oh, you make First Person Shooters? How cute. We make IMMERSIVE SIMS *adjusts monocle*." It's a fluffy genre name that describes nothing. It sounds good and when you dig into the definition it starts to make some sense (I guess?) but it's a terrible name. Even people who make these games hate the name.

Having said all of that, I've always wanted to get into these type of games and Prey looks like an interesting game. The X1 demo is... intriguing but it didn't leave a strong enough impression on me to pull the trigger on it just yet. I'm definitely waiting on some outlets reviews before I buy it.

It also made sure that a lot of the talk was "no, this is not the old Prey!" in coverage, which might confuse people, since they now feel they are in the middle of a series instead of just a new game.

Should have named it different really. Still don't know why they went with this. Not like the Prey brand is really strong from 1 game that came out in 2006 or so.

I personally blame the use of the name "immersive sim", who wants to buy something so pretentious sounding?

Who says Firewatch and Soma are immersive sims? lol. They're more adventure games.

Immersive sims are all about firstperson RPGs where choices reign supreme and it's about interlocking systems and mechanics.

Haha fuck that shit. I edited the Giantbomb page and they're gone now, you can thank me :)
