Netflix announced today that principal photography has begun on Wingard’s version of Death Note and will be shooting in Canada and the U.S. It stars Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars) as Light Turner, Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers) as Mia Sutton, Keith Stanfield (Straight Outta Compton) as “L,” Paul Nakauchi (Alpha and Omega) as Watari, and Shea Whigham (Boardwalk Empire) as James Turner. The film will be produced by Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jason Hoffs, and Masi Oka.

I like the director and most of the cast.

I didn't really give a shit about the anime outside of the premise tbh so 50/50 on this.

I'm scared but on the other hand, it can't be worse than the Japanese movie adaptation.

The Japanese version was an award winning film that even netted Kenichi Matsuyama a nomination for best supporting actor from the Japanese Academy.

This movie wishes it was the Shusuke Kaneko adaptation.
The live action television version was bad, though.

There's like nothing in Death Note that particularly requires Asian actors or an Asian setting. If you're asking yourself why they don't hire a fully Japanese cast and set it in Japan, you're confused about why and how there's a localized production of Death Note.

An example of a work where it would actually matter would be something like Monster, because the main character being a "stranger in a foreign land" is critical to the plot.

But as I said above, the issue isn't that they changed the setting, it's that they specifically were trying to make Light white.

Bullshit. If a Japanese teenager locks himself in his room for hours claiming he's studying (while secretly murdering people with his supernatural notebook) it's actually reasonable to assume he's really studying.

If an American teenager says they're studying for hours on end while supernatural murders are going on you've found you're fucking serial killer.

Nah, it just means he's looking at porn.

lol. If it's a Death Note app and he's on his phone all the time, then it might work.

So I guess Shinigami is the Grim Reaper now?

They could just use the devil or about 50 different pagan deities if they wanted to go that route, honestly.

Hell, if they really wanted to be testy they could just use God himself and do a Job like thing.

I also don't really have a problem with the name Light. It's 2016 for god's sake, there are people walking around with the name Apple or Sephiroth these days.

I'm going to have to agree with this response.

There are a litany of things Americans could use studying to hide
pornography
sex liasons
hot dog eating contests
video games
MMO video games
board games
drug use
drug boards

I don't know that this matters at all. The greatest Asian actor would be unable to play Light, because they prioritized skin color over talent.

It's an American setting, unfortunately Asian Americans are pretty invisible in American pop culture, so these remakes tend to default to White. And as fucked up as this sounds, it kinda defeats the purpose for Hollywood to get a Japanese IP, repurpose it for a western remake and cast Japanese actors.

Why would it have to be cast with Japanese actors? Why couldn't it just be that a Japanese actor did the best job in the role, and got the job? Just saying, it sounds to me like the casting was motivated by racism instead of a drive to create good art.

The audience is getting more diverse though, the Asian American population is growing, and they've got to know that there's been a backlash against white dominance in Hollywood going on now. #OscarsSoWhite, the hatred for Gods of Egypt, the praise for TFA and the F&F franchise, etc.

Nah, it just means he's looking at porn.

Mild original series spoilers.

Light actually did pretend he was looking at porn once in the original after he realized he was being secretly watched.

He still pretended to be studying and watching the news the vast majority of the time, though, neither of which is plausible for an American teenager. They'll have to adapt Light into having a basement bedroom and say he's spending most of his time playing Call of Duty. The potato chip scene will now be the Doritos scene.

I think the best thing they should do is root it in Judeo-Christian beliefs and call them Angels of Death, and relate them to the Angel that performed the tenth plague on Egypt and killed every Egyptians first born including Pharaoh's by writing their names in his/her notebook.

Maybe I went to a weird high school but the kids at the top of my class were pretty popular.

It's a kind of dated stereotype that smart = unpopular. Light's basically a preppy rich kid (or at least pretty well-to-do), and in my experiences those types were usually smart or smart and sporty.
