PS3 Blu-ray Playback Issues as of Firmware 3.50 - Sunshine, anything else?

Oh fuck this. I really like Sunshine as a purely visual experience and because the soundtrack is really well done - it's a fun movie to veg out to because it's gorgeous and entertaining but also not blitheringly stupid. Sony had better fix this in their next firmware update.

Ever since 3.50 there has been random video stuttering in almost every BD I've tried. It lasts for about a minute or two and occurs at random spots even in the same film when watched twice. Audio is not affected. This is on a 120GB Slim that has otherwise given me no problems :(

Zack and Miri Make a Porno doesn't work if you're connected to the Internet. I had to disable my router to get it to get past the loading screen.

you can also disable BD-live and it'll work. It's a bd-live problem.

Has there been any headway made on this BD-Java playback issue? I bought Sunshine last month and have yet to be able to watch it properly because of Sony's fuckup. I've been considering buying a stand-alone blu-ray player to ease the wear on my PS3 from movie playback (it's a phat), but no way I'm going to go Sony brand if this isn't remedied. Even if it is fixed, it's enough to give me pause and buy another brand.

Sorry for the bump, but I just discovered this issue when I tried to break in my new TV with Sunshine tonight. It's pretty ridiculous that it's been over a month now with no solution even promised. I wonder how many of my other blu-rays are effectively ruined now too.

I can't access BD-Live stuff, the hell is up with that, gives me a network error(I can connect to PSN with no issues)

Goddamn it. I love Sunshine. Probably one of my most rewatched blu-rays.

Sony. I don't even want your firmwares anymore. All they seem to do is take away features and fuck up my blurays. :lol

Technically it may not really be Sony's fault. They obviously can't check every disc out there, and it's very possible Fox is the one that coded something non-standard.

Certainly it will be up to Sony to figure out a way to patch it however.

It's hard to code something to a standard when the standards keep changing.

I have had something like that also, was watching die hard on xmas eve and its kinda like picture wobble. also noticed it on ateam these where both played on different machines one a fat usa 80 gig and the other a 120 gig uk slim. Its a strange effect and i cant get it to do it on tv with any other imput source so it must be the bluray that doing it.

I've always had network access for BD disabled. BD-live has been a complete waste and it stops crap like folks streaming in previews.

For me the PS3 has been a flawless BD player. Have yet to run into a problem disc.

Disney Blu-rays are pretty fucking brutal too. Why anyone would want to connect their BD player to the internet is beyond me, the feature is only there to do things to annoy us.

The only disc I've seen with useful Live content was Avatar, which had a bunch of featurettes and stuff there via Live streaming.

Kinda un-related but I feel like bitching about the state of Blu-ray: Scott Pilgrim is one of the first BD-live films I'd tried... They stream new trailers every-time you turn it on, the menus are covered with tickers that advertise shit. Goddamn.

Weird. The menus are plain 8 bit like text here.

Meanwhile on Netflix you just click a button and the movie plays :p

Looks and sounds shithouse though.

Oh wow is the Sunshine thing still true? I was planning on watching this again soon.
Yep, with the latest firmware (3.5 and 3.55) Sunshine defaults to the Enhanced PiP special feature when played normally. The option to turn PiP on or off in the Sunshine menu is disabled. So as you watch it, the PiP window comes up randomly throughout the movie.

It appears the 3D firmware update is the cause.

Fuck 3D.

Just cross your fingers and hope a firmware update comes soon...

i bet the only thing the next firmware update will include is "security" and nothing about this problem

I love how all the Disney Blu-Rays take like 5+ minutes to load if you have BD-Live stuff turned on

Does this only affect 1 movie (Sunshine)? Or does Sunshine have some special features that no other Bluray movie got?

Sunshine was one of the first Blu-rays to use the BD1.1 spec (picture in picture).

I have some problems with my PS3 as well; the audio on a concert Blu-Ray is completely fucking with my surround sound system. Like, bad. Other games run fine, but this movie just won't work. It sounds like it's possessed by a demon, and it used to work on my old 60 gig before it died. =(

Having watched both the DVD version and Blu-ray version of Sunshine on the PS3, I noticed that:

A) they did a TERRIBLE job upgrading this for Blu-ray as far as visual quality goes (there are so many pixelated, blocky parts, especially in dark scenes), and
B) maybe that was the best they could do for the Blu-ray, but the DVD looks almost exactly the same up-scaled anyways

So I've never been in a hurry to replace my DVD copy and get a Blu-ray copy like a friend of mine did. Not enough visual difference to have an incentive.

btw this is one of my top 3 films and I have always enjoyed the 3rd act.

Well, I've never seen the DVD, but the video quality on the Blu-ray is demo disc material in my opinion. In other words, it's a disc I put in to show off my home theater. Also, Blu-ray.com gave the video quality a 4.5 out of 5.

Kinda off-topic, but after updating to the latest firmware my PS2 games (I have a PAL 60GB Launch PS3) look like this.....

Hey GAF, had a nice Christmas?

I decided it was time for another of my bi-yearly Persona playthroughs and popped in P4 into my launch PAL 60GB with software emulation (like the US 80 GB model). Used to work like a charm (with the games it supported) , but now while starting up my game, the sound is fine but the image is fucked up. I checked my other PS2 games and they are the same. Tried different monitors/TVs, cables (HDMI, component, SCART) but the problem remains. I guess the emulation thingie in my PS3 is dying or some update fucked it up, because PS3 stuff works great. I don't have access to a PS2 for a while so if anyone has any idea what's going on it would be very much appreciated. I've included some pics from GOWII to illustrate.

WTF? Have you tried escalating the issue with Sony support?

Are you sure you're not thinking of 28 Days Later? Sunshine looks fucking amazing in HD.

Assuming resolved. I had the Bluray since its release and never had an issue myself.

We watched Speed Racer Blu-ray on Christmas eve, no issued played fine. UK PS3 phat, with latest firmware

Well I just tried this tonight and got the same issue. I sent an angry email to SCEA.

Apparently this is caused by them enforcing some specific BDJava compliance that other vendors don't yet? Either way, they need to fix this problem. Whether removing the compliance on old disks or some other solution.

Fox could create new Sunshine Blu-rays and offer a free replacement program. However, seems like it would be less trouble to fix this via firmware. I'm sure Danny Boyle's not too happy about this, if he even knows about it. :D

Are you talking about Danny Boyle's Sunshine? Because BR version of that look amazing and blows the DVD image quality away so much that it's not even worth discussing.

As for this issue, it sucks, and I don't understand why someone hasn't released some update either for disc or for PS3 firmware.

I suppose, but why we still have monkeys? ie. How come other movies don't have this issue? It's a handful of Fox releases.

It actually isn't just the PS3 that's affected as well, though it does seem to be mostly Sony players. Which is actually good news, since they're getting bitched at from all ends :D

Here's the response I got from Sony

Hello,

I apologize for the inconvenience that you are experiencing with the Picture in Picture options on the movie Sunshine. I do understand the frustration that you feel with this situation. The reason that you are having this problem is due to the fact that the software of the movie is not compatible with the PlayStation(R)3 computer entertainment system. If you have any other questions please let me know.

Thank you for your time and patience.

Regards,
Deanna H.

Not compatible with the PS3? Seriously Sony? It's been compatible with Sunshine for the past three years. It wasn't until firmware 3.5 that this problem started happening.

I've always considered the PS3 to be the best Blu-ray player on the market. I still do. However this response about a well known Blu-ray (Sunshine) not being compatible with the PS3, the mother of all Blu-ray players imo, is asinine.

I responded with this, even though I know it won't get me anything, they have to record this in some database and may evaluate ROI costs of fixing these things.

Hello Deanna,

Except the software of the movie DID work before when I purchased it. It stopped working when you, Sony, updated the firmware of the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system. You, Sony, have invalidated the purchase of my Blu Ray movie with your update. If you want to retain me as a customer with your products, I expect this to be fixed in an update and if that’s not possible as you just said, then to be compensated the cost of the Blu Ray which was purchased for $29.99 + 12% tax (GST + PST) at the time.
