PS4 Pro Won't Support 4k BluRay

yeah that's why there's 5+ paged thread of mS's announcement of scorpio having it and a 100+ page thread of sony's announcement of pro's lack thereof...i immediately thought of this thread when i saw scorpio's

Pushed by who, hm? Probably not from people who has a PS4, isn't it?

Yes, UHD is irrelevant, cheers.

Are you really using length of Gaf threads as an evidence of importance of something? By that metric Scalebound was going to be the biggest most greatest game that Xbox ever had and it was travesty of epic proportion that it got cancelled.

Meanwhile in real world PS4 keeps outselling Xbox even in its strongest territory without UHD support.

Well let's not pretend like PS4 didn't have a very solid lead over Xbox One prior to the S model that included 4K support. Not like Xbox was going to catch up in sales because of that. But having 4K is a super nice feature anyway.

There definitely are people pushing it with Ps4s. I could've sworn I saw some folks saying they were ready to upgrade but got turned off when they said there was no 4K blu ray.

it's a discussion with gaffers, that started on gaf. do you wish to find sources elsewhere on the internet complaining about it? i'm sure we could find opinions from both sides, but what's the point

Artisan still ramming that Scorpio hype train down everyone's throats I see. Soon as I saw this thread bumped I immediately knew who did it :D

It's irrelevant for gaming, undeniably... whether it's irrelevant on the whole I wouldn't like to say as I haven't really been following how the format has been doing too closely. That said, the only places I've seen that stock UHD Blu-Rays locally to me only have like 2-3 of them on the shelf way over in the corner of the Blu-Ray section and they're like a tenner more expensive than regular Blu-Rays.

Worth noting that at the same time 3D Blu-Rays continue to be surprisingly well stocked for some reason. I never bothered with those either.

Your argument against "'UHD is irrelevent' in the grand scheme of things" is that there are long threads about this on gaf. I am showing that in real world length of gaf threads has no bearing. Sure you can disscuss this with gaffers about this topic, but your argument against why UHD is irrelevant for a video game console in 2017 doesn't work.

what I was trying to say was the complaints you could find here are complains you could find elsewhere, but it'll be extension of the same complaints so what's the point?

i even remember going to the best buy in union square and the guy said it was the dumbest decision for sony not to include the 4K blu ray player

What a coincidence, I just got an email from amazon telling me that my 4K HDR UHD Blu-ray edition of Planet Earth II has shipped :)

Still mad at Sony for making me purchase a XBOne S, but I also can't wait to feast my eyes on PEII and a couple of demo material movies that I've ordered along with it.

Artisan, at this point you are talking about this for the sake of talking about it. Fact of the matter is that Sony as a company just doesn't believe in this format and so far there is zero evidence to suggest that they are wrong from sales prospective. No thread on Gaf or anywhere on Internet or a guy complaining at Union Square is going to change that, or add to discussion what hasn't been said before.

That's why i have a 4k tv. And even if the stores don't have a lot of uhd blurays, i buy them directly from Amazon.

And saying uhd irrelevant is like saying bluray supoort was irrelevant with the ps3. In just a couple years, everything will move to that format.

Except they make a 4k player and release all their movies in UHD. It is more likely they didn't want the PS4 pro to compete with their $300 dedicated player.

i don't know if this makes a difference but i should have clarified that it was a best buy employee, not a random guy. so what is it you are asking for then? you think this thread should be locked now?

I'd like to share with everyone all of the 4K movies on BD I've bought since I got my XBox One S. It's been an amazing thrill ride of an experience, and I feel like now that I've seen 4K, I can't go back.

The Martian

What a great movie. Also, it was 4K.

there's a guy literally 2 posts above you saying he bought a xbone s over a pro because of 4K blu ray
PS5 will be out by that time.
i thought the point of the pro and scorpio was to elongate this generation. i don't want to see a Ps5 till at least 2020.

Not irrelevant at all. 4K drives can read triple layer discs which boost a BluRay disc up to 100GB.

Although, with the iterative models we wouldn't see games use that as it breaks BC. Flawed argument of mine ha.

Yeah that $300 thing didn't release until this year and is clearly targeted towards enthusiasts. People who buy those things pay for top of line player. They don't buy video game console that can also do UHD. Sony has bet most average people are satisfied with Netflix level streaming 4K.

True, but isn't that what they are trying to do is push the 4K medium? They sell 4K tv's and movies and I think it's strange they didn't want to push a player in the PS4 Pro. Just seems like a natural fit, much like the BD player in the PS3. It's only 15 bucks per player per console.

Dunno? Perhaps they are waiting for the PS5 for something...

Why do people keep bumping this thread?

It's done. No 4k BR for the Pro. What is there to discuss anymore lol.

Have to grind it like pepper until you can add it to most dishes.

Well there was that other thread weren't they which discussed how the PS4 models didn't have 4K BR as it would dominate sales for 4K players and the division which makes standalone UHD players is separate to the games divison so it'd cannibalise their numbers.

Makes sense to me. Just an unfortunate circumstance related to structure.

All I am talking is their strategy. A veteran company of format wars is clearly indicating that UHD for the most part is irrelevant outside of enthusiasts and Netflix style "4K streaming" is good enough to push 4K TVs to average consumers. That is what they think. So far I haven't seen any evidence that they are really wrong about this.

Right. I get their strategy, I just don't it's a good one.

I have a 4k tv and got the Xbox slim over upgrading to a pro because of the UHD. Simply because I want the most out of my tv and a UHD does that more than a pro would. Streaming 4k is not even close to UHD.

Aww nice! I still have to wait over a week for it to arrive lol We'll get a local amazon soon though.

I even waited with watching the series at all, to keep it all for the best quality available. So I'm also hyped for the content itself haha

Price point also flies in the face of the naysayers: Only 5 pound more than the regular Blu-ray version (which is included with the 4K release...).

About 6 weeks have passed between the last post and that cheeky bump and 4K Bluray still has no mindshare in the UK, Microsoft's second biggest market.

9 times out of 10 any shop/supermarket that stocks DVDs/Blurays doesn't have any 4K Blurays and those that do, have them behind the till like they're porn or sharing a small shelf with the 3D Blurays.

You'll find them in Germany, however it's still relatively minor compared to the BR shelfs.

But whatever, there is no drive and therefore the discussion is obsolete.

One of the points where Sony is really lacking is the damn shop on the PSN.
They got a pretty big library of SD and HD movies for both renting and buying, but there is not a single UHD movie in there and that's where they could stock up. I'm sure companies would be glad to sell their movies there, streaming via renting or download them via buying would be a good alternative. The latter especially for those movies I would really love to purchase like Mad Max.
Especially now with external HDDs...

Yeah, I waited to watch it in 4K too and trust me when I tell you it was worth it. I got it for £27 from Zoom. Well happy with that. Would've been happy to pay 40 for it.

Wrong, as PS3 Blu-Ray support actually had tangible benefits for gaming from the start. The UHD drive in Xbox Ones is literally no use for gaming in any way, shape or form.

In just a couple years, everything will move to that format.

Wrong again, as in a couple of years we're still going to have the same platforms we do today, with the vast majority of them still not having a UHD drive. So unless you think publishers are going to start shipping games on UHDs as well as regular BRs for some reason then you're still not going to be seeing the format having any use for gaming.

Flawed argument of mine ha.

To put it mildly.

this may be my second time bumping the thread, but i've seen it bumped numerous times before in the past.

That's still more than anyone else has bumped it, and none of the rest bumped it after such lengthy periods of time. And more to the point, if you wanted to discuss this matter so badly, why didn't you just post in the thread that is actually about the very thing you were bumping this thread for that is still on the front page?

edit: Ah, I see you've already been posting in that thread and even announced you were going to bump this one in it seemingly for warz purposes. Embarassing stuff.

Here even in London they're really scarce.

Mad Max is great in 4K, probably the best UHD Bluray I have watched on my telly.

not for war purposes, come on. back before the pro was still neo, i hated the idea of iterative consoles and i turned that around and am now a Ps4 pro owner. i'm not happy with the lack of a 4K blu ray player, and its inclusion in the xbone s is what made me almost buy that; what's holding me back is knowing that the scorpio is coming out later down the line.

Me to I actually abandoned Sony over it. Sold my PS4 and didn't buy a pro. For the first time since ps1 my house doesn't have a Sony game console.

It mattered to me

I'm one of those people. It was 90% of the reason for me to get one. Otherwise, the mild graphics bump is not worth $400 to me written I have a gaming PC connected to my TV.

People, really, you gotta stop with the absolutes. If you have a 4K TV and are even remotely interested in watching UHD content, then of course an UHD Bluray is a great thing to have. Yeah sure you can stream, but if you want to have the physical media and enjoy more the quality of the physical disc it really is without a doubt a benefit to have a UHD player. So saying it is irrelevant, even if sales haven't picked up, I really haven't kept up with it, is all in the eye of the beholder.

Now, if you don't have a 4K TV, or you do and you are just not interested in any way in buying UHD movies and dont even care to have or not have the option, then yeah sure, why would you care? Personally I have an Xbox One S, I am glad I dont have to buy a standalone player to have the option of playing UHD Blurays, that is value. And I have a PS4 Pro where I game at checkerboard 4K and I love it, and I dont miss the UHD player since I already have one in the One S.

In conclusion, why this talk about it being useless to have it, or Sony messed up in not putting one? The Xbox One S has some great added value with its 4K Bluray, for those that are interested. And the PS4 Pro not having one is a none issue for those that are not interested. It is value, having it is a plus, it is a good thing, but not everybody is interested, I can live with that. So I can understand the disappointment in some for PS4 not having one, and the apathy of others towards the Xbox One S having one.

Wrong. COMPLETELY DIFFERENT situation. UHD is not in format war like Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray WAS important 10 years ago.

i was on the fence about it as well, if it were not for the scorpio. if the scorpio released at the same time as the pro instead of a year later i might've bought that over the pro. although you mentioned that you also game on PC, do they not make 4K blu ray drives for PC?
