Puyo Puyo |OT| The True Puzzle Fighter

Haven't been able to catch any of the streams but thanks for posting them and then archives. Plan to check them out.

...what a terrible night to be cursed to the top of the page.

If you've been following the pro scene, you might've noticed a lack of female pro puyo players.

Well, meet Tema, the "Puyo Puyo Queen"

ZJkxbbT.jpg

She fought on the TV show eSports MAX a while ago. You can watch some of it here: https://www.openrec.tv/movie/79dwKttb3XB

Curious if anyone else plays Puyo Quest Arcade...? Been messing around with it for about a year now and getting more and more into it. I imagine they don't have it at Round One or anything in the states, so it's probably JP only.
Yeah, definitely Japan only. I've seen videos of it though. You still have to make chains, but you're allowed to slide board puyo all over the place, right?

Downloaded Puyo Puyo Tetris from the Japanese eShop last night, holy hell that's fun. Definitely need to figure out Puyo Puyo, the CPU definitely is taking advantage of my weakness in that. :(

I checked to see if this game was covered here already, and it wasn't, so I'll ask:

Has anyone here played the PS2 Sega Ages Puyo Puyo game? Can anyone comment on how it plays in person? I've heard that it's a good port of Tsuu.

Replays of the Beginners Tournament and the PN Tournament are now up.

Beginners Tournament: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRnRGzROJTw
Puyo Nexus Tournament #1 (2016): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAo3WZimGeo
(The PN Tournament has very poor commentary if you're interested!)

Top 8: https://youtu.be/JAo3WZimGeo?t=7323 (xenotypos-fr vs ShiroBrawl final match is super hype)

I know playing Puyo can be scary, but we had some really brave beginners. They had a lot of fun. I hope there's more GAFers at the next tourney.

The only Puyo Puyo I've played is the Hatsune Miku 3DS version.

I don't really like how you get "garbage" dumped on your screen when you play.

Although it is pretty fun, I'm curious about Puyo puyo 2 on the Sega collection.

Awesome OP/topic. I just imported PP/Tetris for PS4 a couple of weeks ago. I've never played a Puyo game before, and I'm so bad. I just very basically match colors and clear them like Tetris, with no clue on how to do or prepare for chains. I have some studying to do.

I am awful at this. The AI wrecks me because I just can't set up huge chains, it's really aggravating. I think I need to stay in Marathon mode more.

Yeah, the garbage can suck, but that's what makes Puyo great. There's actual risk involved and clear strategic decisions you have to make to prevent garbage from covering your chain.

Good luck, Puyo isn't really that hard if you practice copying some patterns.

Not actually that important
I'm interested in getting a Puyo Puyo retro handheld game, but only if it's worth it (ie game's good). What's the difference between Puyo Pop and Fever GBA? And Fever GBA vs Fever NDS? I know there's also 20th Ann. on DS but if possibile I'd prefer to not import and stick to GBA cor collection's purposes. Of course that is unless 20th Ann. isn't sooo much better (if only vs Tetris was on NDS...).

Thanks!

Puyo Pop shares the ruleset that Mean Bean Machine uses and is kind of a "reboot" of the original Puyo game, wouldn't particularly recommend it

Puyo Pop Fever is focused around the eponymous Fever game mode, which is more beginner-friendly but still has some competitive appeal. It still has the classic modes available in free play, of course.

Compared to the GBA version of Fever, the DS version is basically a straight port that takes advantage of the new hardware. So you gain wireless multiplayer, single-cart 8 player multi (up from 4), and dumb but thankfully purely aesthetic dual screen / touch / mic gimmicks.

I do think 20th is the gold standard of Puyo games and beats out Fever in pretty much every respect (asides from having no English translation), especially since it has structured lessons and drills for beginners unlike Fever. We cover the same content (without the hands-on tutorials, obviously) here. Try out Fever GBA/DS (these were the games I started out with) and if you want to gather more Puyo games from there, pick up 20th.

Some updates on the Puyo scene.

Petition: Puyo Puyo Tetris Localization
57 signatures so far: https://www.change.org/p/tetris-hol...-to-sega-so-they-can-release-puyo-puyo-tetris
No one really knows if this petition is gonna work. But, maybe we can elicit a response from SEGA or The Tetris Company to learn whether PPT can ever happen, especially in light of Tetris Ultimate's failure.

SEGA Addicts: Puyo Puyo Tetris Stream
This is gonna happen today (3/13) at 9PM EST. Possibly netplay or a story mode run.

Puyo Puyo 2 is on the list of supported games in the coming update!!!

The Puyo Puyo 25th Anniversary Book came out yesterday in Japan, and since Amazon.jp is ridiculous, I got mine today.

Most of the text is in Japanese as expected, but it's still a neat book overall even if you can't read Japanese.

There's a game by game summary (main series games) that show the characters in each game, character profiles for pretty much EVERYBODY, even a lot of minor characters get a short section.
Also there's short scripts between characters, developer interviews, comics and a lot more.

It's a really cool book. I got it for $25 from amazon, shipped to the US. If you're a fan it's a fun thing to have

Support Magical Stone on Greenlight, it's a (purportedly) arcade perfect clone of Puyo Puyo 2 focused on the competitive community

edit: nevermind, probably don't want to support this game, read the translated comments for more information

Beta version (that only has ranked battle atm) is also out, I think an English option came out today but I haven't checked

My buddy bought a bootleg CD rom back in the day for his Dreamcast that had every Genesis title on it. We started playing Puyo Puyo as a joke one night and all became OBSESSED. Throughout high school we held monthly "Puyomania" tournaments and even had a makeshift Puyo trophy that the winner held. Love that damn game.

Great thread, and wonderful OP. I just started playing the series for the first time thanks to SEGA 3D Classics Collection, and I'm loving it despite the AI and drop speed driving me up the wall. I'm still more of a Puzzle Fighter guy myself due to my inability to chain more than 2 together. As much as it must suck for Puyo Puyo fans to not get any of the modern releases in English, at least Puyo VS 2 exists - I wish there was a freeware Puzzle Fighter clone with online out there :(

He who pursues two rabbits gets two rabbits.
Well now that I've bothered getting Wii U homebrew up and running, I can play Puyo Puyo Tetris at home. (I have the PS4 and Wii U versions but no PS4 console, so I just take that version with me when I go to local events.)

What were all the differences between the versions, other than the DLC being already included on PS4/XB1? I heard that Puyo vs Tetris garbage rules were somewhat rebalanced on PS4/XB1 but I never heard any specifics.

Time to get better at 4-wide combos and GTR.

Now that Puyo Puyo Chronicle is out, let's get this thread going again.

69Ogh4F.png

As you may have read in other threads, this game features a new single player experience. Instead of head to head puyo matches, you attack enemies with chains that deal HP damage.
CcSh0xF.png

If you're a beginner to the series, you can get through story mode by grinding your stats.
The story mode is still fun for experts, though; there's post-game content featuring EX versions of all the bosses. Not even a 16 chain can kill these bosses in one hit.

The online play is actually pretty smooth in the U.S. considering it's 1) on the 3DS, and 2) you'll be playing against people in Japan. SEGA also improved some of the match settings. You can finally do your FT100s on an official Puyo game.

SEGA US hasn't showed any signs of localizing the game yet, so you might as well import it...
Puyo Nexus has a Menu Translation guide if you don't know how to read kana.

What's it gonna take to get GAF more alive about this game lol

Release schedule:
Japan: Mar 3 for Switch (as Puyo Puyo Tetris S)
Western release: Spring 2017, Switch and PS4

Confirmed information about the Western localization:

The game is already up for pre-order on retailers. ~$30 for the PS4 version, $40 for the Switch version. Switch version has a key chain pre-order bonus I think.

All I have to say is that the dreams of western Puyo fans have finally come true. And with the portability of the Switch, it will be really easy to start developing a competitive scene for Puyo Puyo Tetris.

Anybody interested in learning how to play? With a localization confirmed, and with this game as a Switch launch title, Puyo Puyo Tetris has a long competitive future in front of it.

I don't mind dual audio for this game, I'm not playing it for that. Getting the Switch version for sure!
Hoping that those releases will help making the series more popular again yeah.

Also, there's now an official english twitter account! https://twitter.com/PuyoOfficial

I'm seeing if I can offload my JP Puyo Tetris somewhere, I pre-ordered the PS4 version and can't wait for it. I just wish it had more Tetris modes since that's the only reason why I play it.

Is it weird that I'm more disappointed about lack of dual audio for Puyo Tetris than I am for Persona 5? I'm really gonna miss all the quirky Japanese voice clips.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Question: why the fuck is the Switch version $10 more than the PS4 version? Is there an actual reason, other than stupidity?

I imported the PS4 version a couple of years ago. Will it be online compatible with the North American version in spring?

English dub-only, too? I know it's weird, but the JP in-game voices had way too much character to lose. I might end up importing this new version.

Only the physical version costs more. Based on the Japanese site, if we maintain feature parity it seems like the Switch version will come with additional content (paralogues/skins/voicepacks in the vein of content that was previously sold as DLC) not in the PS4 version.

That would mean they have to add new DLC though, because the PS4 version already came with all of the DLC from the previous versions.

Nevermind, looks like the JP site was just describing the DLC already released on all platforms. Pretty low effort port then I guess? Wonder if they'll low-key add more balance changes and bugfixes to the Switch version like they did with the PS4/BONE versions?

I'd get it but I can't find anywhere in the UK that's taking preorders for it. Has anyone else had any luck...?

It's coming over? And on Switch? NIIIIICE.

Too bad about no Japanese voices though. Went perfect with the nonsense storylines.

Satan renamed Dark Prince for the west

tumblr_ojqm4vIKZh1uvmnzoo1_540.png

Only time Satan hasn't been named Dark Prince outside of Japan is in the Sonic Runners collab (and a throwaway mention in 3D Puyo 2's manual), so that's not surprising. It dates back to the translation of the first arcade game where almost everyone got renamed

I like that the Tetris characters are getting their names changed, though. The original names were a bit too on-the-nose for my tastes.

With the Nintendo Switch inbound, we're probably never getting this or the stand-alone eShop release of 3D Puyo Puyo 2 on the 3DS are we? :(

It's nice to SEGA U.S. step up their social media game for their other IPs. A few days after the official English Puyo Twitter went up, they made an official Yakuza Twitter too! Looks like we can't keep saying SEGA only cares about Sonic lol...

Puyo Puyo Tetris will release soon on Feb 9 in South Korea and Taiwan. Mizuki Hosoyamada, the producer of Puyo Puyo, went and promoted the Taiwanese version himself.
