Resolution doesn't sell games, says Far Cry 4 dev

Too many on here stating that resolution doesn't matter to the casuals or that there not even aware of it is wrong. Maybe before the time of the smartphone and tablet it wasn't a well known issue but these days even people from Benefit Street have iPhones and Android phones. News travels fast with social media. Trust me general public knows 1080p is better than 720p!

It's like watching that annoying kid get pissed off his parent's won't buy him a toy so he keeps going on and on about how he didn't really want it/it's not that a cool a toy anyway.

Honesty, Ubi, you got far more major problems that 180 lines of resolution.

1920x1080 vs. 1600x900 = 500 lines difference

It's like BluRay vs Netflix/Cable. Sure there are enthusiasts that care but most people don't care about resolution quality. When it comes to gaming the most successful franchises arguably have outdated graphics like Warcraft, Minecraft, MOBAs, etc. And if people really cared they would be running high end gaming PCs, but that generally doesn't happen

Netflix vs Blu-ray is more of a convenience argument than quality. We watch Netflix due to the instant gratification and access to thousands of titles.

Prior to streaming video services, people were upgrading from DVD to Blu-ray for the improvement in visual and audio quality. When you spend money on a 1080p, you want 1080p content, and with 1080p now the standard resolution on all TVs, it is no surprise that 1080p is what all games should be as standard.

Those games you list may have "outdated" graphics but you can run them at the native display of your monitor, giving you a crisp image with no blurriness.

Most people can't tell the difference between the two.

To all the 'majority don't care' replies...

The difference in hardware sales between PS4 and Xbone and their shared multiplatform titles says otherwise.

The PS4 launched 100 dollars cheaper.

The PS4 has a bigger install base.

Correlation doesn't mean causation.

Resolution in the 720 to 1080p range is very inside baseball. Go to any Best Buy and Gamestop and survey the gamers there and you'll see. Sure we have a lot people very passionate about it here, but that's very niche.

Well duh, like he said, the average consumer just doesn't care. I think that's something everyone here can agree on.

If everyone truly cared about resolution and fps, no one would buy a console.
You would be wrong and he knows he's wrong. He's a salesman. It would be wise for you to know this.

So much misinformation about resolution, even within the dev community? Just walk down to your local TV store and see 4K in action for yourself. The difference is staggering.

Also, it's not about resolution selling games. It's about resolution being native to the display device so as not to artificially blur the image during upscale + extra detail. We've had 5+ years of that already.

Exactly.

That's a good point I didn't think of. If resolution doesn't matter, why bullshot?

Because graphics only truly matter to companies when it can be used against you. :p

Still love the Jim Sterling line about how these developers MADE graphics uber important in the first place. Now that they can't seem to live up to them, well now they don't matter!

Yep, it's bullshit. Like Sterling said, they sold us this mentality and now they're having problems dealing with it.

Very true. MS itself used this a lot in the last gen as the reason the 360 and 360 versions were superior. Some publishers touted this kind of thing as well. But it's true, the "average joe" doesn't really care, as long as it looks great.

Now, the difference between 720p and 1080p IS definitely noticeable on today's bigger TV's (50-60 inch or so). But what makes more difference than whether something is 900p or 1080p is the quality of the animation and effects. Yes, hardware is less powerful if it has to run at 900p to get the same level of animation and effects as another 1080p version on other hardware. But as long as those effects are there and the animation is smooth...people playing that game really won't care. Nor should they, if they enjoy the game.

Bottom line, the resolution game shouldn't have been started. It's bad for developers as their product now has to hit imaginary "perfect specs" on each hardware platform. If they can't do it like a lot of thise XBox One vs. Ps4 versions than the developer takes some heat for "being stupid" or "lazy" in not being able to make the hardware perform at the level people arbitrarily expect. It's bad and good for the hardware vendors...mostly as a marketing point. It was good for MS during the last generation and obviously bad for them this generation as they find themselves on the opposite end of the "raw horsepower" discussion. It's bad for consumers as it generates a ton of negative (positive too, but negative is always more powerful) buzz regarding different hardware platforms that in the end almost always has no effect on whether or not they will enjoy playing the game on this system or that.

My personal take on it is that while it's fun for us geeks to debate and yell "gotcha!" back and forth as we advocate for our personal preference in platform, but really has no relevance at all to the market in general.
