But here's the problem. On top of Nintendo burning them multiple times in the past, there isn't much of an audience for games like Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed on Nintendo systems.

People go where the goodies are. The mass adoption of PS4 this gen from non-PS3 owners shows that. Nothing's really set in stone regarding hardware branding.

And like I said, Nintendo consoles are almost always supplementary. Most Nintendo owners are getting their western AAA fix due to the Playstations and XBOXs they also own. If Nintendo did ever court competitive hardware, they'd be able to negate this limitation, in theory.

But in practice, people who wanted such games have already made their investments in a PS4 or an Xbox One. They aren't gonna buy a $400+ Nintendo system. The market is set in stone as far as the high-end systems go, so all Nintendo can do now is make an impulse buy device & hope people get it as their second system.

Dont people want to play Nintendo games without investing 300 into a WiiU?

If anything this should be something that owners of the other consoles should LOVE

Gamers generally like seeing their games with a leap in graphics on new platforms and low specs generally turns game enthusiasts off. People would accept this because Nintendo have done it for 2 generations now but it would be pretty tough to build up any hype in the gaming community with something like this, infact it could create even more negative press for them. People would be excited for some games, but just think about how Nintendo has fell into the background for the past few e3s sinse the ps4 and xb1 came around.

Continuing to take this cheap route is destroying their brand generation by generation imo.

In 2016 they could easily do PS4 level + something more for 250$. Maybe small loss, buy a game or 2 and be profitable.

The Wii U was so expensive because of the gamepad and outdated and thus expensive tech.

The new platform is aiming for a price of $149.99 to avoid competing directly (price wise) with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The company fears that it would be market suicide to release another overly expensive box in the middle of a console generation, when most consumers have already invested in a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Wii U development kits are being used to develop NX software; the NX hardware is technically a Wii U except with higher memory bandwidth and a more balanced CPU."

So their next console is basically just a souped up Wii U without the gamepad?

I'm having a really hard time believing this...

And how many people who are Nintendo fans first and foremost buy a PS4 and XB1 because it's the only place to get those games?

It's not just about converting people, it's also about getting some of them back.

If that were the case then we'd have reached saturation point with PS4 and XB1 sales wise, and afaik they're both still selling.

But the mindshare with both systems is too strong. Not to mention the people who follow their friends into certain online communities. There's literally no point in Nintendo trying to compete mid-generation.

If they place it as the "Nintendo Franchise Console", it might actually work for that price.

Even if it's just a souped up Wii U.

Nintendo's usual art style doesn't really need anything more powerful, their games look great they way they are now (with the notable exception of Star Fox U, I don't have any idea what's going on there graphically)

Would be a crazy maneuvre though...
